SVE contacted me a few months back to see if I'd like to come up with some ideas for "Taking Chances", her first single off the new record. When I first heard the song the lyrics immediately made me think about the opening sequence to the great Agnes Varda film "Cleo from 5 to 7", one of my favorites. I usually mull over ideas for days or weeks before coming up with anything decent to share with an artist, but this one just came out immediately. I sent a sketch of the idea onto Sharon and Zeke Hutchins, her manager, then I didn't hear back from them for over a week, at which point I thought, well, damn, they must hate the idea, I blew it! But soon Zeke contacted me and asked if Sharon had sent me the album artwork. I said, no, I haven't even heard anything else off the album yet, let alone seen anything from it. Sharon then texted me pretty much the same question, "Did Zeke send you the album before you wrote this?" Nope. I didn't understand what the big deal was. Finally they sent me a photograph that's a big component of the album artwork, it's this beautiful aged picture of Agnes Varda standing in front of a bazillion reels of 16mm film. This image of one of my filmmaking heroes has been hanging on Sharon's wall wherever she's lived for years and years to the point where it's all tattered and weather-worn. I like to think that Ms. Varda is standing in front of a bunch of reels from Cleo from 5 to 7, but who knows. It's just one of the strangest coincidences, and it made us all feel like the video had to be made. So now I can safely say the video is inspired by two incredible women: Sharon, for her musical inspiration, and Agnes Varda, whose inspiration on the both of us is quite apparent.

KellyOKellyComedy She really is, that's great though. When I was in middle school, I used to hear her playing guitar outside all the time. Didn't know I'd be watching her on youtube one day!

Lyrics: Turn on the charm Call to response now. Sitting on the porch, looking for a way out Touched on me deep That's why I'm still here. Why do we think that we've no plight? Even I've taken my chances Even I've taken my chances On you and I know In the dark, on the way out It's even in old songs. It's the combination that takes emotions. Why don't we go now? No need to think on our own now about it. Even I've taken my chances Even I've taken my chances On you. When you love, all of you They know, all of you, Be alone and take, and you break For whose sake? About to leave, about to leave Even I've taken my chances Even I've taken my chances On you.
She's in the new season of Twin Peaks! Her voice is perfect for a Black Lodge scene or the Roadhouse.

How fortunate that one of Brooklyn's finest poets is a popular singer, so that she may reach more people. If you were wondering about poetry, this is it.
I wanted to but never sent this video to someone very important in my life. It came up recommended to me yesterday and memories flooded me. Too late to send it after all this time. Went on with my day. I woke up to an email this morning like a response to a call I never actually made. Sometimes connections run deeper than they appear.
Her stares are piercing through my soul
this record is a real grower. took me 3 listens and then i fell in love.

100% agreed. Same story for me. Listened to it once when it came out and it didn't grab me. Came back to it a couple of months later and now I can't stop.
I love the instrumentation and composition of this song. The intro is unlike anything Sharon Van Etten's done before, yet it feels like a natural progression from Tramp. And Sharon Van Etten's singing and lyrics are as mellifluous and intriguing as ever. (Hopefully early) May can't come soon enough.
The transitions and line breaks make this song for me. How between one chorus we may get a music break, another it might break right into the next lines, and usually depending on the emotion and pace of the lines it could change. And the “Remember?” after “Even I’ve taken my chances on you” was perfect, I rewound it just 5 seconds to hear that break multiple times, it was really well done. I love when the rhythm isn’t repeated and one line can sound like it’s in connection with the first it starts so soon after, or sometimes there’s instrumentals. I don’t like when music repeats the same rhythms, and that’s something SVE did a wonderful job on in this song, really mixing it up.
Sharon, you came to my house in Houston after playing at the Proletariat many years ago. It was absolutely wonderful. I'm glad to see and hear your music online. You are fantastic!

Ur just saying what she is saying????
I'm obsessed with this woman!
I remember when this video came out. I watched this video at least ten times a day. Such a beautiful song and so much soul was thrown into the camera.
I love love love her!
mellow voices like this is just what we need
She was literally the main part of the OA that had my heart pumping; I was like, "I know that girl from somewhere, then I was like; I do know here!" When she started singing; it made that boring ass story into something for a brief moment. But let me stop playing, I'm going to buy all her music. I got "We Are Fine" because I heard it play on Rectify, but I need to actually get it now.
es que ... la amo... simplemente.... amo a Sharon.... su voz remueva toda mi alma.... eres un ángel cantando tesoro...
I'm so in love with this sooong!
She is just fantastic.
I spent half of my 2014 listening to this tune. I didn't regret any minute of it.

OMG, Sharon
Amazing AAAAAAAA++++++++
I listened to the album like 5 times. The first four times were boring and i almost gave up on it, it finally hit me the fifth time and I was like, damn this has some catchy songs.
First time I listen to this it missed me... This was the second time and it got me good. "Everytime The Sun Comes Up I'm In Trouble" got me on the first listen... on maybe the 4th note.
