This story is further proof that journalism is dying. The Washington Post recently ran a story about how Shark Week on Discovery Channel "overwhelming features white men as experts while emphasizing negative messages about sharks." Also, they told us that many of those men share the name, "Mike." Thank you, WaPo, for the incredible, hard-hitting journalism.

    As a black woman who is aiming to major in Marine Biology in university, I couldn't care less of the gender nor the color of the person providing me with the information. I've known I wanted to do this since I was 14 and never once did my gender or skin color discourage me from doing something that I knew I wanted to do and loved to learn about. It NEVER even came to mind, and it still doesn't. I watch a lot of films and shows related to nature and ecology. I'm focused more on learning and admiring the beauty of our world and the species that occupy it, not the skin color or gender of the scientists, researchers or narrators. That has nothing to do with the science of our world. I promise it is not that deep!

    When I was younger I wanted to be a MB and even did two internships at different zoos and aquariums. I’m white, but both institutions had plenty of diversity in their staff. @@milton1448 it’s nice to know that everyone isn’t the same. What if every white man looked and was portrayed the same way in every movie? Same dry humor, same black short hair cut, same height, same background, has both parents. You’d have everyone thinking all white men are the same, when in fact they’re not. Some are funny, short, have long hair, introverted, extroverted, or from a single family home. It’s the same with black people for example. Every black woman in movies/media are loud, ignorant, whores, sluts, and big assed bimboes😂. So now you have everyone thinking all black women are like that: ignorant and slutty, when actually I’m a 24 year old virgin, college alumni, introverted, manga loving fat geek😭. Having good and diverse representation shows the world that not everyone of the same race/gender are the same.

    The question "why do you need to see people who look like you to be empowered" is one I've been puzzling over for so long. Seriously, does a person have to look like you in order for you to look up to them?

  • @victorcates9330

    @victorcates9330

    If a field typically excluded women, then the presence of the first, pioneering woman to look up to would be proof that a person doesn't need permission. When I went to university, the class was 90% men. The handful of women banded together (formed a clique), and after a couple dropped out, the rest followed. I changed campus to a much smaller class. It was one woman in about 20-30 dudes. She was clearly fantastically intelligent and her natural peers were 1-2 top male students. If you'd added another female student of average capacity, she would have been better served to identify with the top male students on ability and work ethic. The identification thing seems a liability as much as a boon. If the top mind in a given field was a literal parrot, then you'd be served to try and learn from it and feed on each other's ideas.

    Yes, Whitenack is an established shark researcher and has published numerous articles from field and lab research. Analysis of media presentation is also important to any field as it is important to know how the public perceives work from your field, so this research was called for. As a scientist, you should know not to boil a researcher down to one single article that they have published.

Besides, my name wasn't Nigel, and apparently most historians have that name. 🤣 You know, Brett, as much as I loved your segue way today, I don't know if I'm going to take advantage of the Magic Mind deal you're promoting. After listening to what these......"scientists"....are saying, I rather feel as if a calm, logical, coherent, rational mind would be radically out of place. I've literally gotten to the point in which I don't even respect these "people" enough to even bother responding to them. I might need to stick to my coffee. Besides, drinking coffee straight out of a coffee pot at 8:00 in the morning while giving a history lecture to my students at a rate 12-15 times faster than they're capable of taking notes is one of the true pleasures in my day. 😂Anyway, Sweet Lady, God bless you, and keep up the fantastic work!! 😊

    Pioneering diver Valerie Taylor helped film Jaws, then spent her life trying to save sharks. By the early 1970s, Valerie had made and appeared in plenty of underwater films, but it was the 1971 shark documentary, Blue Water, White Death, that really made her name as an ocean cinematographer.

    Growing up I thought I could do anything I wanted with the right amount of preparation without seeing any Native American/German females doing it. The only time I contemplated otherwise was when people tried to tell me I couldn't because (fill in the blank -too white, not white enough, female, pretty, ugly, etc). I considered what they said and when I realized their opinion didn't come from my actual abilities or work ethic I just ignored them. I excelled in the sciences, mechanical engineering, mechanics, cooking, music, modeling, taking care of my family, and many other things. I've never needed someone that looked like me to do it first. If it interested me, whatever it was, I studied and practiced it. I wish they would stop trying to victimize and handicap the children and people of our future.

    Shark Week is problematic. It's very much about entertainment and the "shark is dangerous". Like last year they had a guy put himself in a transparent tub that subsequently got attacked by a great white shark, broke the tub, and the guy barely made it back to the safety of the boat. Pretty disgusting. Meanwhile, someone like Ocean Ramsey, a woman, free dives with sharks and swam with Big Blue, the largest known great white shark in the world with no issues. There's also a couple accounts on IG that fly drones over juvenile white sharks swimming peacefully with surfers in Southern California. While the Discovery Channel claims they are trying to show sharks in a non dangerous light, they really don't. Not good for ratings. Even with someone like Ocean Ramsey, they would have a narrator talking about how close to death she is if the shark choose to attack her. "She'd be gone in seconds if Big Blue wanted..."

    I miss the scary documentaries on shark week about the sharks eating capsized people. I had a problem with them giving a boat to a little white kid (probably in his 20s) and everything unusual caught by the fisherman was brought to his attention and the kid was credited for discovering several new species by pointing at it and saying NEW! Mike is the name of a white person that you don't really know their name or it's Dan. I was almost named Michael but there was already a cousin in the family that was already named that. And not white. Also, someone typed #porductivityhacks above the title.

    Look up "great white shark spyhopping" it's actually kinda adorable Also disagree. A shark uses its bite for investigative purposes too. It's weird to think about, I know, but when a shark bites something it's not necessarily to eat it. It's to get an idea of what it is. These animals have been around a while, they almost always know food when they see it.

    The shark conservation thing is true. Since the late 1970s after jaws came out the hatred for sharks skyrocketed. People seeing them as killing machines of the ocean & wanting them all gone has led to an over 90% global decline in all shark populations by trophy hunters and people making shark fin soup. Shark week really does nothing to make sharks look less scary to the population with showcasing “the deadliest creatures in the ocean” even though you’re more likely to be killed by a jellyfish than by a shark. Up until the 20th century people didn’t even think sharks were capable of attacking humans and now they’re on the verge of mass extinction because of the entire jaws and shark week era.

    My father is literally a white scientist named Mike, and I'm brown. So what? If I became a scientist too, that wouldn't make me better than him. Anyone with common sense will find it more important for a scientist to be well qualified than to be or not be a certain race (a.k.a. racism). I'm sick of these people claiming that they're stopping racism while doing their best to perpetuate it.

Bull sharks are bull sharks whether they are male or female. Must be the patriarchy. 🤷
