Shark Scientist Reacts to The Meg 2 Trailer

I watch and review the shark science in The Meg 2 Trailer! #sharks #science #ecology #marinebiology
I am Dr Sam Munroe, and I’m an ecologist. That means I study plants and animals and how they interact with their environment. I got my start in ecology studying sharks and so I love watching shark movies and dissecting the science (or lack there of!) in these films!
Remember that sharks are important for healthy oceans and most species pose no danger to humans. Shark bites are incredibly rare, sharks don’t target people, and when bites do occur, they are often a case a mistaken identity. Sharks should be celebrated and respected, not feared.

megalodon extinct species of shark that lived between 19.8 and 2.6 million years ago, approximately, during Estimates suggest that their large jaws could exert a bite force of up to 110,000 to 180,000 newtons. Fossil remains indicate that this giant shark had a cosmopolitan distribution, with breeding areas in warm coastal areas.5 C. megalodon probably had a major influence on the structure of marine communities of its time.6

When it comes to the "pack-hunting Megs", I haven't read all of the books in the Meg series, but from the ones that I have read, if I recall correctly that behavior is present in the books. In the first book, the female Meg displays very typical shark social behavior when it comes to interacting with its own kind: immediately after they are born, Angel (the daughter of the female Meg that I mentioned in my comments on your reaction to the first film, but I don't know if any of the Megs shown in this trailer are meant to be Angel herself) and her siblings are on their own (their mother (spoiler alert) even kills a couple of her babies herself because she feels they're too weak to survive on their own in the wild). But in later books when Angel has children of her own, I believe she actually changes her behavioral patterns. If I recall correctly, Angel is VERY protective of her offspring, and they actually live and hunt as a family group/pack (although one of her sons proves to be kind of a bully towards his siblings and Angel has to get really strict with him at times).

Angel's mother ate those two siblings because they hovered around for too long, and she was hungry after having just given birth. Angel herself never displayed any parental instincts towards her kids, and would have eaten them had Jonas and the Tanaka Institute not separated them immediately after birth inside the Tanaka Whale Lagoon. As for the descendants of Angel, aka her kids, Mary Kate and Ashley were social to the point they could tolerate each other, but the real stars of social cooperation and pack hunting were Bela and Lizzy. Bela, being the only offspring not born of parthenogenesis (her lead grey coloration on her back leads credence towards a male great white being her father), was the muscle to Lizzy's brains, and the two would actively coordinate during a hunt to ensure increased chances of success. This was shown in Nightstalkers.

Yes, and I loved the way Bella and Lizzie swam together. Lizzie in the top/lead position and Bella just behind riding her wake. And if I remember correctly, Bella and Lizzie had pups and they were very protective of their pups. And a pair of those pups displayed the same swimming behavior as their parents, except that the grey backed shark was in the lead position instead of the white shark. Also, I’m not sure that a great white was Bela father. Angel was recaptured while mating with her son from her previous litter. Angel killed him because the doors to the tanaka institute were closed behind them and he couldn’t get away from Angel. So most likely Bela is the daughter of that mating.

In the secong Meg book the sharks in the trench don't have this pack behavior, but their prey, the Kronosaurs do. Meg pack behavior doesn't appear untill book 4 when a captive female has a litter of meg pups and the book explains that they can sense their huge mother nearby and this causes their new behavior.

There was one instance in Australia where a surfer got attacked by 2 Whites simultaneously. That has never been seen before or since, he managed to survive though but the video is awesome. One white came in from the left the other from the right at the same time.

One thing of many logical issues is why something that big would even be chasing after something as small as a human than focussing on finding much larger critters. It's like people at a buffet ignoring the prime rib and fighting over the carrot sticks.

I think one of the coolest shark facts I've learned in recent years is the fact that some lady sharks actively choose to have the same male father their offspring year after year, and they'll often go to shallow waters as a "nursery" site for their babies. Shark biology and ecology is so neat to study. I love them

Fun Fact: The prehistoric prologue in *"MEG 2: The Trench"* was from Steve Alten's 1997 novel: *"MEG: A Novel of Terror",* though the T. rex - described as standing twenty-two feet tall - was hunting a pair of large duck-billed hadrosaurs called Shantungosaurus - described to be more than forty feet long - that strayed from the herd, before it got eaten by the Megalodon.

Here’s a fun fact. Great White sharks aren’t true apex predators. The Killer whale/Orca is a true apex predator and they love the livers of great white sharks. I remember seeing a special dealing with gw sharks and orcas. They were able to electronically tag a great white and tracked its movements. There was a shark they were tracking in feeding grounds off the coast of Florida until a pod of orcas entered the area. They were hunting great whites and was tracking the shark. The shark made a sharp turn towards open waters and dropped off the continental shelf. They lost the signal for 2 weeks or so and the next time they pinged his signal it was off the coast of Madagascar.
