Sharing ONE backpack for a two-week trip
After my mom was unfortunately hit by a car while walking, her surgery and still-continuing recovery have revealed that her mobility has decreased forever, but I still wanted to celebrate her retirement by checking off one of her bucket-list: visiting Switzerland. With her challenges in movement, I would be her mule; her sherpa lol, and carry EVERYTHING for both of us, so in this video, I share how TWO people travel with just ONE bag comfortably... one single carry-on and two personal items - no checked luggage to slow us down.

Clothes are, by FAR, what cause most people to WAY overpack. Before 2016, I chose fast-dry clothes and learned how to hand-wash correctly, but as an original backer of Unbound Merino's crowdfunding campaign 8 years ago, I've never looked back.

My mom didn't want to use a packing cube, and for her socks and undergarments, you saw in the video that she just used a random drawstring bag she had lying around at her place. This is a testament that the tools YOU choose to use don't need to be travel-specific, as long as they work for you. I know a few folks who use large ziplock bags to pack their clothes.

It's common. All you do is wash things every few days. Women always pack a lot more because they want all their different looks, but it isn't really necessary.
I just now discovered you and my biggest take away is that your mom is so very blessed to have you as a son. On the other hand, you seem to be very blessed having her as your mom.
OK seriously I have watched several of your videos. Because I and my two teenagers want to be one bag travelers. But now I’m hooked on you! Because you carried your mother things! You, my friend, I have a new respect for you! Thank you so much for showing the world how to treat mothers❤
Hope your mom’s recovery is going well. I recently traveled from San Diego to Paris for a 7 night stay and, using things I’ve learned from your channel, I just had a backpack and a small waist pack that fit under my lightweight jacket. Even buying souvenirs, I returned home with plenty of room in my bag. I’m in my 60’s so everything had to be lightweight. While I never check luggage, I used to pull a rolling bag. Not now! Thanks for your helpful videos! Hope you, mom and your sis had a great trip. 👍🏽

Thank you for mentioning the rolling bag. I am 60 and newly retired, planning on traveling soon, and was wondering if i could handle a backpack loaded like this.
Generally, I agree, traveling with only carry on luggage is the way to go since there's less time wasted on both the departure and arrival side of your trip. However, recently, I was forced to check my carry on luggage due to an overbooked flight and honestly, it was quite liberating. Zero stress about trying to board ASAP within my zone so that I could find an empty space in the overhead storage. And when I went to pickup my luggage, it was the first one out since it was likely loaded last. Not a bad experience once in a while. 😄

I love this liberty, too. Since I only travel with a backpack that fits under the seat, I have no anxiety boarding, even if I'm the last one on. There is something to be said for that.
THIS IS THE LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION I NEED IN MY LIFE!!! Thank you for the video, I'm literally about to buy everything XD
His boooo to his sister for her large luggage was classic!!!😂😊
The Pakt 45L exceeds the standard carry on length of 21.5-22 inches, it is 23 inches long.
Prayers for your mother. It's awesome you went traveling with her.
Shout out to Mum for surviving and hopefully thriving in her recovery. Prayers for momma.
Hope your mother is healing as expected. Cheers mate from Australia.
The real challenge nowadays is travelling with only the bag you can place under your seat on a plane.

Yes. This is for the dedicate few. Possible in a 2 day trip as well on a 2 year trip. Just be ready to wear the same outfit 3 times a week.

Actually very doable. A whole subreddit is dedicated to know how to: onebag. I’ve successfully one bag personal item bringing a mirrorless camera and a drone and fit under the seat few trips now this year. My pack can go for two days, to one week, to indefinite.

I do this with a Tom Bihn Synapse 25 backpack containing 1 pair of pants, 3 shirts, 3 pair socks, and 3 pair underwear (all merino wool blends) while wearing one set of clothing to travel. This gives me 8 different outfits allowing me to do laundry once per week for as long as I need. The outer pockets on the bag contain my tech, toiletries, support, and water bottle.

For me the challenge is keeping it underweight, because lots of international airlines impose a weight limit. I can easily live out of a Goruck GR1 for a couple of weeks, but my bag ends up *dense* and can break the weight limit by a kilo.
This video just popped up for me. I hope your mother is doing well!
Your mom is a vibe! Hope she’s recovered by now!
I hope your mom is doing better. (I enjoy your videos btw)
The challenge with backpacks is their weight. Your mom was lucky that you carried it. Thanks for the video.

My thoughts exactly. I like backpacks but I’m less than fit and in top of that, I’m not getting any younger. Carrying a heavy, even moderately heavy loads after a while can get very tiresome, when you’re waiting in a long customs line for example. I feel more at ease with a carry-on roller and a backpack on the smaller side that I can use as a personal item
Prayers for your mother on her continued recovery. 🙏🏻
You're mom is the best travel mate! Prayers for her quick recover.
Your mom looks so cute. Hoping she recovers soon.. This bag looks good but prefer the Aer Travel Pack 3 small. Thanks for another great video
The consistency of useful suggestions in your videos are appreciated! Thanks and keep it up!
God bless your mom, I wish her a speedy recovery
Long time viewer, great video as always, cheers to mum! Enjoy retirement!
I always enjoy your clear and informative videos. Thanks again.
I’m sorry to hear about your mom. My love and prayers.
Congratulations Mom!! Enjoy your retirement.
Nice video. Hope your Mom is doing better. Wish her a speedy and full recovery.
I’m sorry to hear about your mom’s accident! I hope her recovery is going well and that she’ll be healed soon 💕
Maurice, I'm so sorry to hear about your mother! I hope she recovers soon and isn't in too much pain! 🙏 You're a good son for taking care of her! ❤
I gonna travel soon😊 your video is very helpful! Super quality content 🎉
This video came up at just the right time. I'm about to travel in a couple of months with my daughter and was planning on doing exactly this. Thanks for the tips!
I love that you’ve travelled with your mum, hope she is well. I can’t wait to do the same, have done a few trips with my parents and they are priceless memories. Nice job on packing lite!
You always get me excited to travel it used to be scary but now that I did the work got over the fear of traveling I don’t like luggage or extra bags thank god for you and your videos you make things so simple and not a big deal so thank you.
I hope your mom has the best recovery possible.
Amazing. Super useful. Love it
Love the one pack for two. This would be great for my husband and I on our Christmas trip to Milan. Thanks and congratulations to your Mother on her retirement.😎🎊💖
I love watching your content!😊
Dudeeeeee your organisation is insane!!! I learned so much!
Your mom is such a trooper! Wish her a full and prompt recovery! And you sir , are a good kid! Two outfits only is a bit minimalist even for me but I love all your travel tips. This Pakt bag seems like it struck gold with organized travelers. Oh and your sister’s suitcase didn’t look that huge 😂
Yaaaay, Canada. I am always grateful to see a Canadian country (to avoid extra fees for shipping from US or beyond). Thank you!!! Hi from BC!
First, you're a good son. I hope your mother's recovery continues to go smoothly. I am fascinated by your videos. I am afraid I pack more like your sister. That backpack is amazing. I love the clamshell feature. I am also going to look at your EDC bag. Great video!
so sorry to hear about your mom but man, your delivery of the news, plus the background music and instantly switching back to talking about the subject of the video cracked me right up lmao wishing her well 🙏
I had to rewatch this video a second time to catch how long your trip was. It amazes me how you managed to limit your clothing to just 3 sets each. I don't like traveling with checked luggage but I've convinced myself I have no choice because of the number of clothes I bring. XD I'll have to seriously start investing on Merino wool if it can cut down my pack to the same as yours and your mom's. I hope she recovers completely, btw.
EXCELLENT-EXCELLENT-EXCELLENT info and demo. Thank you!!! 🎉👏🏻⚡️💫
Thank you for your video
Great tip for the foot powder!
Awesome! Love how you outfitted your mom with Unbound Merino and carried the backpack for both of you. I do wish you would mention the weight in your videos, as some of us are working with weight restrictions. My current project is figuring out how much winter gear I can pack into 7kg carry on bags for our family. 🌺Heidi
Re: sweatiness: merino underwear/socks are a must. Ask your doc about Drysol for your feet. Solid cologne. One bag is more difficult if you need to dress nicer and/ or exercise or if weather is an issue.
@Lenduya

There are merino wool shirts and pants. But yeah, if you need a suit, then that would be a big issue.
ooh, foot powder in a plastic bag is brilliant, I would have never thought of that!
Thank you for the video. My wife and I have been both transitioned to one bag travel albeit her one bag is a roller carry on. Our longest trip thus far has been 3 weeks in Italy. One bag for both of us would just be too much of a change, but I love the challenge of it.
Excellent production.. I’m considering 1 bag only for a 5 day Rio de Janeiro trip so this was insightful
Always wondered about your merino wool items but being female, I wasn’t sure it would be for me. But saw your mom and went ahead and got some leggings to try with your discount code. Hope it looks as good on me as it does your mom. Tell mom thank you for modeling for us :)
Fantastic review, also want the 15 L smaller pack. Keep up the great work.
Continued healing to your Mom, and congrarularions to her on her retirement. I am poat retirement, and traveling right now. I really dont want to do one bqckpack bag. It is just too heavy and gets uncomfortable, so i have a carry on size wheeled and a small pack that fits under the seat. Oh and my wheeled goes over cobbles fine, after a month straight, no issues.
I’m an older guy 64 love your vids I also was a keto guy mostly carnivore now gotta say mom looks to be In awesome shape sorry about the bad luck your fam. Has had Maurice
I traveled w a 40L Cotopaxi backpack to Europe this past summer. It was very roomy and great for maneuvering stone streets and steps. However, it was quite heavy and hot to carry. My back was always wet. This fall, I bought an inexpensive but well rated rolling backpack. It’s smaller than the Cotopaxi but is plenty big. I also really like my small Calpak spinner case. I believe it’s 16 x 15. Bc it’s small I can easily carry it if I have to. And I never worry about having to check it in. Thanks for sharing great tips and tricks
This is a wonderful video
Supriced Maurice doesn't use Unbound's merino wool socks, their AMAZING! Also recommend Duluth underwear as a fellow person who sweats a lot lol.
Merino wool is great… unless you're tall, in which case there are not really any retailers offering tall sizes other than Unbound, which is always out of stock. They also don't have tall merino wool pants or dress clothes.
what a great content and presentation
Hey Maurice I have that same Alpaca sling. And FYI the little outside charging port actually has a spot to hold a SIM card tool and a SIM card. You can pry up the face and it opens up for ya.
Loving this concept and the compactness you can obtain through merino, but I definitely can’t spend $80+ on a tshirt or $200+ on a pair of pants! I’d love to see some more accessible alternatives!!

believe me, if you've never had any merino wool clothing - it is worth it.
I just found the channel the other day, and have been binge-watching (most) of the videos. I also have the Alpaka Bravo Sling Max AND the Pakt Travel Backpack V1. I was actually a little mad when I saw V2, as it seems to address a few of the issues I have with using it as a "one-bag" solution (albeit by using the everyday bag). Replacing the built in sling with the TSA pocket seems a good move as well.
This was a really interesting video
All this is great depending on where you are ! But in asia, you have a 7kg limit on carry on baggage and aside from that if you want to bring back something from your travels that needs to be checked in, it ll probably end up in pieces in case you do check in the soft bag. Which is the only downer to this whole thing. Having said that, the Pakt backpack is beautiful.

It’s possible they may consider this pack is for two people…in a travel party.
as usual a great video
Don't get me wrong, I love my collection of packs and gear, but I find a parallel passion in minimalism. Amazing video!
Amazing.
Nice like the info.
It’s like you read my mind, I just returned from Europe and I was thinking about what materials are lightweight yet warm for clothing. I am happy your recovered and had an awesome retirement trip.
Hello from Vancouver. I sorry to hear about your mother accident and I hope she is on the mend. I was drawn to this the travel pack for the less attention grabbing (thus less prone to theft or robbery) design, color choices and durable materials used. The clamshell dividers are uniquely practical for a more wrinkle free travel. I like the zip out expansion pack that can also fit the 15 liter day pack while transiting but one has also the option of using it as part of the under seat stowage in a larger commercial plane too. I am guess 45 +10 =55 liters in total would not be accepted at carry-on by most airlines. The 15 liter day pack with that is amazing flexibility both sliding into the expansion pouch or under the seat carry-on is perfectly thought out. The 35 & 45l v2 travel back pack is out of stock and overprice for non US residence. It does not include the 15l day back which is another overpriced $185USD. The daisy chain loops don’t have much of a functional use. The hip strap does no longer double as a fanny pack as like in version 1. I would to compression packing cubes instead of the PakT branded ones regardless of the loops. The clip-on pouches are very expensive for they lack luster utility. There are more functional and cheaper one out there that make more sense. The front 2 pouches can’t be combined into an one cable locking system like Peak Designs 45 liter. The aluminum back stays have been replaced with a cheaper plastic set. The water bottle pouch is not long enough to be used alternatively, as a tripod or monopole & stand pouch.
Sweaty feet are awful. I used to have that issue until I switched to Under Armour socks. Problem solved. Nike dri-fit are very good as well. Thanks for all the great content. Your videos are always insightful, informative and I enjoy your subtle sense of humor in them. Again thanks so much.
The smoothness of your audio cut to you in the hotel was near seamless!
great detail and care with your videos thank you … time with your Mother priceless And thank you for linking and suggesting the Haynes …just ordered and received they are so comfortable ! how did you research and discover them ? 😅
I have started to bring a sim ejector tool when travelling now too, I just upgraded to the new iPhone 15 pro max and the battery life is great. Even though they want people to use e sim these days, I prefer being able to switch to physical sims when abroad
Let me know I've been wanting one for the longest. Ty
Such a challenge for me to pack minimally but, your videos are making it easier for me to attempt this and make this a practice or at least, reduce my packing. The goal: A Europe trip with carry-on only.
One question why u don’t use vacuum bags ??? Reduce more space than packing cubes plus 1 little pump by flextail u can shirk yours clothing even more
@daniel-ix
7 ай бұрын
Honestly, if you’re trying to lighten your pack more, a flextail, even though it’s small, can just add more things to bring and weight. But that can be one of those luxury things one can choose to bring. Personally, I like my packing cubes (I use Peak Design packing cube) and it works well for what I need and my bag
Well done. I do not wear knits. And wool makes me itchy...sigh. But I loved watching this video...packing envy.
As a person who got hit by a car in 2016, I still can't fully function, so I've been traveling only 1 backpack, too.

damn! :( Wish you a full recovery nevertheless!
Awesome tip about how you keep your feet from stinking!
i felt that sibling trash talk through the screen omg 🤣
I’ve heard that merino wool can be good for packing light with fewer laundry days, but you have to replace them often as they wear down quickly (not durable). But I still kinda wanna try them at least once. Trying to decide between WoolX, Wool&, and Unbound Merino.
Thx for the well done video commercial, the Unbound Merino button-up looks like a pajama top, the Unbound travel pants look more like joggers or sweats & Unbound Moreno-Tencel sweatpants look like women's leggings - none of it looks even slightly masculine.
I have been watching your videos of late and I like how you present everything. One question on the hygine items. Since, most airlines require that liquids and gels be in a clear ziploc, do you carry that in addition to your travel kit and use that to go through airport security?
Awesome video as always! Honest question I can't wrap my head around. As we walk around a lot when traveling, it's impossible to not sweat considerably. And it just seems impossible for me to travel with only 1 or 2 shirts. Even if they're antimicrobial, durable stuff and if you use deodorant, can you really sweat through entire 3 days (or something) and not smell bad? Thanks!
While this is very neat and all good, I cant help but wonder how much it weighed fully packed. Most airlines I've travelled with have a pretty strict 7kg (15lbs) weight limit per person. And even though I only have a backpack they almost always weigh it. Also as mentioned, bags that fit under the seat are greatly preferred because Ive been on many flights and those overhead compartments fill up quick. Not only that, but they are also troublesome to access during the flight.
Hey buddy, love the videos. Looks like you have put a lot of time into your research and providing links. Unfortunately, none of the Alpaka links are working. They take me to the Alpaka site, u to cannot find any of the bags/pouches that you are showing.
6:15 instead of using foot powder, the deodorant you use on your underarms to keep them dry can be every bit as good on sweaty feet. No plastic bag tricks no mess.
I wish I could convince my wife to travel like that!
I love this concept and really keen on not having a checked baggage for future flights, problem is most airlines only allow 7k max for their carry on. I wonder how much your baggage usually weigh? BTW, what camera did you bring?
Even when I go away in just my own country for a few days... I still pack more than one bag 😅 I never manage to pack light
Wait...two pairs of leggings and two t-shirts for your mom for your entire trip?! My head is exploding.
You had me at zipper pocket!
For men who have had chaffing problems or have had jock itch something like bn3th or SAXX underwear that have a pouch can be a game changer
I've been trying for years to travel with one bag, haven't been able to so far. A 35L bag, when packed, won't always fit under the seat in front of you, it depends on the plane model, how much the bag is full etc, but mostly it means you have nowhere to put your feet and that is very uncomfortable for a 6'2" person like myself. So, in the overhead bin it goes and I can stretch my legs as much as possible. Sometimes I pay extra to book an exit row seat but in those seats all bags need to go overhead.
@arlencarlson

I have travelled with both 28L and 30L bags…even those you can’t fully pack out. Chase Reeves has said in one interview that the goal should never to be to pack out a backpack. My travel with the 30L, successful on what I would call a typical small plane that I would often travel in, was more or less the test case for my ability to use the 35L Pakt bag. I fully expect that my foot/leg room may be limited sometimes. But on a larger International flight, there tends to be more room.
Wow what a challenge 👍👍 so nice to do that to your mom ❤❤❤
Great video. my wife and I are going to Ireland and Scotland for a 20 day vacation. How does Merino wool compare to Alpaca clothing?
Great video. During my career, retired last September, I too traveled a little too much - ave 150 to 200 nights out of the house a year, but now that travel is strictly for fun, and I don't need to carry both casual clothes and work clothes (including uniforms) so a smaller carry is more efficient. My wife and I just got home from a three week trip to Andalucia region in Spain (Granada and Cordoba are absolutely beautiful) and for the first time in my adult life I traveled with just a 40l backpack thanks to her guidance (she is definitely better at packing). But my question is one I have for this video and others who highlight Marino wool. What if you can't wear wool products. I have tried but I end up with red blotches on my skin at certain contact point. And I have bought high quality products. So are there other non Marino options you would recommend?
Great video! I love the tips - very useful. But my dude, well over $200 for a t-shirt and pair of sweats? That is ridiculously expensive. Any wool options for us regular folks? 🥴
Love this bag and have been enjoying your channel for sometime now. As a fellow Canadian is there anywhere to buy this bag in Cnd dollars or is it just available on the Pakt website in US funds? I use many of the items you share but of course am always trying to keep the costs down and use Cnd funds when I can. Cheers and Thanks!
