I'll never forget the first time I met Shaq. It was his rookie year, the day was March 19th, 1993, and I was 9 years old. My family had taken a trip to San Antonio for Spring Break. We stayed at the (Marriott) Plaza San Antonio Hotel. When we arrived we were waiting in line to check-in. I was standing with my Dad in line while my brother and Step-Mother were roaming around somewhere in the lobby. Then we started seeing people with Magic duffle bags walk in. Steve Kerr, Scott Skiles, Nick Anderson, etc.. They looked exhausted, and while they were nice and said hello, they didn't seem to have time to make a young NBA fan's day. Understandable. Then, a mountain walked past me.. My Dad looked at me and said "That's Shaquille O'Neal", I nearly fainted because I was a huge fan and had been watching him all season. I watched as the clerk tried to hand Shaq his room key, but his hands are so big he was having trouble grasping the key out of the clerk's hand. So Shaq just held his hand out, and the clerk had to drop the key in his hand. I remember it so vividly because it was and still is one of the highlights of my life. Anyhow, I was extremely shy, and kind of scared to speak up.. but when he turned around I gutted up and said "Sir, can I have your autograph?".. Shaq replied "Sure little man, but walk with me for a minute." I ran to grab a paper pad and pen from the hotel desk as he waited with my Dad, smiling, and laughing with my Dad. We then walked to the elevator, talked a bit, and he asked us to join him while he goes up to his floor. During the elevator ride he asked me if I played basketball, how old I was, etc., I told him I had been watching him all season and I'm a huge fan. He talked to my Dad a bit as well. When we got off the elevator he asked my Dad what we were doing that night, and I looked at my Dad and he said well I don't know we just got here. He replied "We are playing the Spurs tonight, you should come to the game." Then he looked down at me and said "Alright let me see that pen.".. So I handed him the paper and pen and he autographed it for me. Shook my hand, my Dad's hand, and walked off down the hallway. As a young NBA and Shaq fan, it made my day. That night, my Dad bought 2 tickets from a scalper so we could go. Shaq played well, but ended up getting kicked out of the game because of some dirty move David Robinson pulled on him that got him heated. I'll never forget it. Shaq has always been a good guy, stayed humble when needed, never forgot where he came from, and done things to help others or put a smile on someone's face.. Even 9 year old me.

I love Shaq and Barkley! That inside the NBA crew is legendary. Top players of all time once upon a time and now Broadcasting hall of famers, but they are really just hilarious, smart and talented people with common sense and they really do good out in the world. I love all of it
