Shaping Public Opinion: Crash Course Government and Politics #34
So today Craig is going to talk about where our political opinions come from. Of course, most people’s politics are grounded in their ideologies, but there are also other external influences such as the government itself, interest groups, and the media. So we're going to talk about how these influencers factor into the overall public opinion and how their roles have changed over time. Now this stuff may seem like common sense, but it’s important to know where our opinions come from, especially when you consider how quickly the media landscape is changing.

Protip: if you meet someone asking for signatures on a petition, the only question they are LEGALLY REQUIRED TO ANSWER TO ANYONE WHO ASKS is "Who is paying you to stand out here and ask for signatures?" Often that tells you a heck of a lot more about the petition than anything the person standing there could say.

+Nobody There will be 1 or two people who say they are conservative or support republicans. Below them will be numerous people saying that conservatives are idiots. The internet is largely a younger population that tends to be much more liberal, so the shitstorm is going to be a bunch of liberals shitting on conservatives, mark my word.

2017 and the vid is still pretty relevant and I am probably going to watch it again
Thank you for your videos. My brain works a different way, and visually helps me out a lot more than reading.
3:06 I'm questioning the dark wizard Aku's status as a communist sympathizer, but the reference is so amazing that I don't care.
Craig is awesome, y'all are awesome. The bird had it coming....
I think as of late I have lost a lot of trust in the media on the whole. How they frame certain issues and how much they seem to get wrong makes me trust that what they say on the whole is not worth my time. If they can't get something right in politics or national news, why should I trust them on international news stories and the like?

Craig says "I get my political opinions from PewDiePie". in 2017 that would be a VERY controversial statement.

4:13 Most important factor
loving the video game and cartoon references...

Craig's the best, lold at that ending
Everyone should have a say in what will happen, because we all live side by side with each other, and it would not be fair if someone was left out. Also, each vote makes a difference in the ways that we live. It is always important to to share your opinion. The way you vote will affect many people, and their everyday life.
3:10 Aku cameo - for when you just gotta get back, back to the past
This is so much more relevant today than it was 2 years ago.
I'd like to know why Craig hates the little stress-ball-eagle-thingy so much. I mean, this is a series on US Government, and the bald eagle is the symbol of our nation--and by extension, our government. Could we hear the eagle's side of the story, as well as its feelings on being punched at least 3 times per episode?

will any of the future videos discuss the things that influence the media? They choose a way to frame &/or prime a subject/piece for a reason, I'd love it if you'd break down those reasons and help educate more people on how to think critically about how/why the media is showing them certain news pieces in a specific way. Thanks again for these awesome videos.

helped my 3 years later !! thanks guys!!
This is a great overview.
Why do the episode numbers on the playlist skip from #31 to #34
Good video mate

Was the shadow of that boy Aku? The bad guy from Samurai Jack? Now we know how it all started
Craig, I just found out that you were left-handed, cuz you always punch the eagle with your left hand. LOL.
Sweet Samurai Jack reference there!
You should get ready to change the number of Speakers of the House in the trivia bubble in the theme song. :)
That "No Child Left Behind" animation, though.
3:11 EAGLE PUNCH!
More Craig, he's good
Why are some episodes missing? Where is #32 and #33?
watching in 2020, even more relevant than 2015!
All those little kids getting into the bus with Bush isn't reassuring...
3:10 - is the shadow Aku from Samurai Jack?
3 years later and I'm watching this =)
Woah, I am watching this 3 years old. How did he know??
I was drinking Fruit Punch at the Eagle part. Wow
Great video, but I have a few notes: 1) Ideologues Ideologues are the tiny tiny fraction of informed voters who affect the opinions of those they are in contact with. We all like to think we're informed but really only a small minority of the electorate are. We can all argue whether or not Joe the everyman conservative/liberal has accurate opinions, but the fact is that his opinions affect those in his social circle. This is always factored in when analyzing public opinion, especially on a local level. 2) Gas Prices: You said that key policies e.g. Obamacare are affected by economic conditions. That is totally true! However, current comprehensive analyses of macroeconomic standing by qualified economists do not accurately predict public opinion. When it comes to opinion on any policy headed by a major figure like the president, public opinion on that policy and on that official vacillate according to gas prices. Seriously, go to gallup's website and plug in the variables. When presidential approval ratings are up, the approval stats for their policies also increase. However both presidential and presidential policy approval go up and down depending on the price of gas. The delay is usually between a few days and 2 weeks. P.S. There are exceptions such as the major ratings boost leaders get in wartime, right after election etc. Controlling for those variables, you'll see that gas prices are the greatest predictor of authority-initiated public policy opinion. 3) The Undecided It really comes down to the 10% in the United States. Most people have made up their minds ideologically. Whether they truly think a policy is wise or not, most people stick to their party or ideological identity. However about 1/10 people are genuinely thoughtful and vote with up-to-date judgement. THEY are the target of manipulative ad campaigns, not the general public. Edit: Also there's also methodology! People 35 and younger generally don't answer phone questionnaires and don't participate in long-study online public opinion studies! Thus we can't get a good idea of how effective the methods in your video are. Public opinion research has the unfortunate nature to skew towards the opinions of pensioners.

Really interesting video, but (and I know y'all know youtube better than me) it'd be nice to have a bit of a longer pause between cuts. With information like this, my old brain needs a moment to soak in the smart-juice before the next serving..

Gjoni seemed to be only a match in a tinderbox and established crazies tried to smother the fire with rocket fuel. As far as social media being used to do horrible things. Some horrible things are being attempted but the access to information via the internet seems to be the best counter-actaint. It doesn't stop people who feel they are too busy to be informed being lead astray by the media they trust.
Please do a video on money in politics.

If you write it, they will come. A wide variety of news sources will give you a fuller picture. I often find my opinion will change on most subjects based on the information at hand. Like this man said, remember who told you, not just what they said.
Damn, I forgot all about that dress thing
3:06 Samuri Jack Aku. anyone else see it?
The media seeks to manipulate -- it's as easy as that! They want to shape the opinions of most people to try and form some sort of consensus; too much variation among the people leads to conflict and hindrances to progress. The media also sets the standard on what is acceptable and safe to agree or disagree with, and people generally follow their lead.
I also get all of my news from Pewdiepie 😂
We especially need to watch the media.
I'm surprised he didn't mention media bias
It must be a tenuous position at the top.
See you in three years, Craig.
3:30 the girl is playing on a ds 👌
oh my god Wheezy Waiter I love you
"even though its three years old" *looks at date this was posted* 3 what three? theres no 3 its 4 (at first I read it wrong and thought it was 3 years. unless I did the math wrong. it is 2018 and that was posted 2015 so)
The media by far has the most influence on human thought and policy...and is far from beyond the reach of corporations or even presidents (re-election...). More of a mediacracy than a democracy really.
Aku!
