Shaping Newnham's Future | History Champion Sarah Dunant

Supporting Newnham College's Shaping Newnham's Future campaign is History Champion Sarah Dunant. We caught up with Sarah to discuss the study of history, the importance of it and why women studying history at Newnham College have shaped the discipline.
Shaping Newnham's Future is a £25million fundraising campaign which aims to meet its goal by July 2026. Our past and current students have benefitted from a transformational education at the University of Cambridge, launching them into a whole spectrum of careers including Supreme Court judges, politicians, entrepreneurs, Olympians and world leading journalists. Will you give so that others can benefit in the same way?
One might think of History as "1066 and All That" but not at Newnham. From research into early astronomy, astronomical instruments and courtly science to modern French colonisation and taxation, to social histories of late Imperial China, to the economic history of the Ottoman Empire and the Eastern Mediterranean, our academics are working on truly diverse subject matter. History is a popular subject for undergraduates and post graduates at Newnham, and we also offer two joint undergraduate triposes in History and Politics and History and Modern Languages. Two of our Senior Fellows in History, Professor Gabriela Ramos and Dr Kate Fleet, will be retiring in the next few years. We are therefore raising funds to co-fund a permanently employed University Teaching Officer in History who is also a College Fellow and Director of Studies.
