Getting shown how the master Mike Davis do his craft. Mike is currently based in Noosa Heads, still shaping in his 70s.
Originally from Santa Barbara, South California, Mike grew up around the likes of Rene Yater, George Greenough, Bob Cooper and many more. He was surrounded by innovators of the art itself. Later down the track when he would move to Australia, the techniques that was learnt along the way went into function along with Mike’s academic education which gave him a language to measure and communicate the terms of what a surfboard needs to function.
He is now based in Noosa Heads, Australia. Mike shapes boards under the Little Cove Surfboards name. In this video Mike shapes the Step Deck model and shares his methods learnt over the years.

I worked for MD 36 years ago as his 'grommet' sprayer. I did all the artwork on the MD surfboards and Nat young Dinosaur Mals, along with his Emu sailboards, Fun times, he hasn't changed a bit!!!! Go MD!
Some good insights on shaping, but even better, some great insights on how to live a good life.

30+ years ago when Mike was also making sailboards, I created a profiling machine so most of this methodology was no longer necessary. Rocker curve is likely the most critical design component of surf and sailboards. Working like this creates an imprecise and incalculable result. Every board is a lucky dip, which completely unnecessary in the 21st century.

@@stevengouws8684 It was needed as part of an experiment of mine. I thought an exponential rocker curve would provide maximum potential speed for a hydroplaning craft. I produce several boards from the initial profiles. No other additions to the shape as the intention was to isolate rocker performance. It worked extremely well. The boards were lightning fast and still turned well, an unexpected result. I really didn't have the money to make too many boards so I eventually sold the profiler to a local board maker. Without trying them, he destroyed the templates and created templates that were copied from Naish and Fanatic. Seems some people just aren't scientists.
