Shape Design Workshop: A Pro Concept Art Workflow for Speed and Efficiency

Фильм және анимация

During this live workshop, I'll be sharing a powerful and versatile workflow used by pro concept artists to unblock and let the creativity flow with speed and efficiency. This technique can be used for anything, from characters and creatures to environments and vehicles - all explored and understood through the use of shapes.
Concept art is all about getting ideas from your brain to the screen and this is one of the best ways to unblock and let the cool stuff flow. Come hang out with me while I demo this technique and we'll have live Q&A throughout the stream.

    Thank you so much for this video. Hardy does a good job showing what he's talking about. Loved the comparison of the human and the ship, still being the same ideas. Anyway - this was exactly what I needed today, trying to figure out how to do sillhouettes for more "realistic" characters, rather than over the top animated ones. :)

    Really insightful video. I had wondered how artists create such interesting shapes and designs. Now I have a whole set of design ideas to learn, like contrast and big medium small. Is there any resources you would recommend for design theory concepts? (Especially regarding shapes and shape arrangements)

    06:00 Space ship?? What kind of ship: generally what defines its look? 8:58 looks like a headless bird or menace, but without any details that I stubbornly want to protect. 17:02 our imagination treaure chest opens and multiple streams subconsciously guide our movement. Same big picture swoop from gen for overall landscape, background, coloring, lighting, body form then working towards more detail. On my way towards more and more detail, I have to remind myself: which details interfere with who my character or concept is.

  • @fowlerillus

    @fowlerillus

    Жыл бұрын

    Hmm - that's weird. I'm sure it's a setting issue, but I'm not sure which one could cause the issue you're describing. I have pressure sensitivity set to the brush size jitter, so that would be a good place to start.

    @@fowlerillus sorry should have described thay better. Firstly I am a Noobish in photoshop and mostly do photomanips but I am trying my hands at sketching. Right, so the question I had really was, that I can see you are using a rectangle brush of sorts. And when you apply a stroke the whole rectangle doesn't apply buy only a portion of it (I believe it would be the left) Is that because of the Jitter settings? Or another brush setting?

    Can anyone teach me how to rotate the brush angle like that?

  • @fowlerillus

    @fowlerillus

    7 ай бұрын

    Sure! I think you're referring to the brush tip shape angle to give the brush that slight slant (if I'm making a wrong assumption there, please let me know!) - to do that, hit F5 to bring up your brush editor. At the top of the little editor menu you will see Brush Tip Shape. Select that and you will see this diagram of a circle with two white dots and an arrow. That is the modifier that you need to adjust. You can flatten the brush by bringing the circles closer together or you can change the angle by grabbing that arrow and rotating. I hope that helps!

  • @sketsakafit3733

    @@fowlerillus Yes, at first I thought you were changing the brush angle using some kind of hotkey. Then I realized that you just changing between brushes in this video. BTW, your video is so good. Thanks for sharing your process, I've quite learned a good deal from this.

    I’m character design is form over function more important?…

  • @fowlerillus

    @fowlerillus

    11 ай бұрын

    Good question - I think both are important and have to be considered but I usually try to get form solved first - just pure "are these shapes cool" as my first priority. Then I start working out function things like - where are the ship's engines and cockpit or where are the robot's joints etc.
