Transferring the prevailing light and mood isn't always easy but a seasoned artist like Shanna seems to read easily the values straight away. The values relate so beautifully. Thank you for such a fine tutorial !

Thanks for a great video. I noticed that the subtitles read that she was blocking in complementary colors when she was applying blue to the tree foliage- which ended up green. Nonetheless, Shanna Kunz is definitely a very talented artist. Thanks for posting.

To see the painting in life, you can see the purples coming through the greens and it gives then unity with the rest of the painting. Thank you for your reply!

HI Shanna! Can I ask what type of brushes you are using here? Looks like Rosemary, but is it bristle or synthetic (Ivory, Evergreen, etc)? Love this painting, and getting to watch your creative process! Thanks!

Susie Moore Art & Photography I use Princeton Brushes, the Aspen line for most everything. Mostly flats and brights and in all sizes. I also use a shorter palette knife to get thicker paint down! My website has my brush set posted if you are interested!

Your painting is absolutely gorgeous. I am a painter myself, and have been doing landscapes since 1982, and I am curious as to why you don't put the background (sky, hills, valleys etc) on first then paint the middle ground ...then the foreground. It seem like it would just be harder to do it the way you did. Kind of here and there and everywhere in no particular order. Is there some kind of advantage to doing it your way? Is it a paint build up sort of thing...or a lack of it? Basically I was taught to start at the top and work my way to the bottom. That way you don't have to paint around things you have already finished. Just my curiosity...hope it doesn't kill me...LOL

Pike Evans Hello Pike! Everything in a painting is about relationships - how color relates to each other, how atmosphere and distance relate to each other, how the center of interest becomes dominant and the rest becomes more quiet. If I work from the top down, I am only painting a photo of a painting so I like to get in my values, my color harmonies, and my shapes from the start so they can all relate to each other. Believe it or not, there is an order in my head. It’s all about the abstract block in at first, then building the shapes and colors and finally the brushwork. Thank heavens everyone has their own way of doing things because that is what makes are so unique and so expressive! Thank you for posting!
