I like how the algorithm at times can't decide on CC's suit's color. Totally befitting the character, in a way adding more to the art then mere colors.

Shanghaing actually became a federal crime as of 1915, the year this short was made. I guess that's one of the reasons for making this particular film that year, to show us a film of what sailors were legally able to do and were really doing up until that year

Best Merchant Navy (instruction) film I ever seen. They showed basically everything. It should be shown at all the maritime schools and said: this is essentially how it goes. The part on how they get people onboard is metaphorically accurate. The collusion between the owner, the captain and the chief mate is just as it goes in their everyday business. Rolling effect is pretty good for that time, just as the depiction of it causes if things are not fastened. Great timing releasing the lifeboat. This ending for the captain and the chief mate is the dream of every seafarer, specially deck crew. Kkkkk.

However, this person probably needs to get his/her certificates and license validated with the US Maritime Authority; which for the Merchant Navy, I believe is the US Coast Guard. This is the same requirement for any other IMO signatory country. For example, if a shipping company has a ship registered with Panama, then the ship's crew need to have the Panamanian Seaman Record Book and validated license and certificates.

And is the person allowed to study any Maritime related courses in the accredited institutes in the US? If I understood it correctly, for example, say in Canada one can get a certificate in a sea-faring course in an institute but can be employed in a Canadian registered vessel only if he\she is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.I am just curious about the regulations regarding this in the US.

Laurel and Hardy also did a shanghaiing short film, but there the captain had Laurel do the egg in the mouth routine with a bunch of bar drunks and had Hardy knock em out with a frying pan. Both there and here had the captain pull the "I'll also knock out and bring along the guy I asked to help me shanghai the other guys" bit.

@@dwaipayanroychowdhury7035, yes, that's right, and there was that one particularly drunk guy that L&H shared a cabin with, and they then accidentally think they shot and killed him, and they toss him overboard. But he was only passed out drunk, so he climbs back onboard and L&H think he's a ghost. I love old black and white horror and ghost films. There's an interesting 1940s film "Ghost train" where a group of people get stranded at a train station overnight and are told by the station attendant about a ghost train that comes by from nowhere every so often in the middle of the night. And they learn that just looking at it kills you, and that happened to the attendant and killed him. Good film

Before climbing back into the cabin the drunk guy tripped and fell into this white stuff, climbed in through the window, pulled the covers up to his head and dozed off. It was after this that Hardy climbed into the same bunk and Laurel was looking inside through the window all the while Hardy is scolding him and suddenly he realizes that if Laurel is standing outside the window then who is lying beside him. The look on his face was priceless! Thanks for letting me know about the movie I will look it up. I also like this black & white horror films. They have a certain charm.

@NOSNOS 1995, ok, I'll do that. I've seen lots of 30s and 40s era films now, but there are still many I haven't seen yet. Going to the movies was a very popular activity back in the 30s and 40s to help people forget about the troubling times of the Depression and then WW2
