1 reason I can think of, He thought leaving that distance would make Niels go for the bank and fail like he did or failed safety but I can see your confusion, that was a bad push out.

In my opinion, both positions before and after the push out did not leave much room for action, shane just left the cue ball at a more available spot than it was before. Initially, the ball was tigh on the rail and did not offer any options at all.

he was setting up a savety shot where he would play a 9ft cue ball kill shot and hide behind the colors he missed. he got a bit too speedy tho thats why he sold out. he played the same push out against jason shaw in his race to 100.
