Saw this movie at the theatre in 1971 opening night. The theatre was so packed, we did not get there late, that the only two seats together were in the very front row. Neck hurt after the show. But it was worth it. As always, enjoy your reaction.

I was a little kid when the Dirty Harry movies came out and I've always loved them. My dad's truck can actually be seen on the bridge in one of them. He came home one day all excited because he was on the bridge when they were filming. I live just outside SF, in fact they mentioned my town in this movie, and my friends and I always enjoyed the car chases a lot because with every cut/edit they'd be in another part of the city. 😆 Anyway, I hope you watch the others. Magnum Force is a really good one. 🖖🏽

Excellent reaction. I love the fact that you distinguish between thriller and action, and that you appreciate a slower paced film. Too many young reactors do neither and thereby cut themselves off from a host of great older films. I haven’t seen this film since it first came out, but I remember that it had tremendous fan impact because of Eastwood’s portrayal of a modern detective. “Coogan’s Bluff” (1968) was a kind of transitional film, because the setting was modern, but Eastwood’s character was a rural detective in New York, and the movie still had a western feel to it. Eastwood is one of the greatest movie icons of the last 60 years, with a huge body of highly varied work.

Andy Robinson was a peacenik and had never fired a gun before. Production was shut down for a week while an expert was brought in to train him in firearms.

My 3rd favourite Clint Eastwood movie. Best line in Dirty Harry comes from Harry "When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher knife and a hard-on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross."

Good reaction to this classic Shandor....I hope that you will react to the 4 sequels (all with Clint Eastwood back)... Andrew Robinson (who played Scorpio) would go on to star in many movies and TV series - some of his best roles are the dad in the first Hellraiser film, the head detective in Cobra (with Stallone), the Sargent Barber in Child's Play 3, the Col. Daddy Mutha in Trancers III, recurring roles in Barnaby Jones, JAG & Vega$, guest appearances in The Dukes Of Hazzard, Kojak, The A-Team, Cagney & Lacey, Kung Fu, Moonlighting, S.W.A.T., The Practice, Bonanza, Matlock, CHiPs, Law & Order, Murder She Wrote, Walker Texas Ranger, the X-Files, The Incredible Hulk (live action) TV series & probably best known as Garak in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Harry's Partner Chico (played by Reni Santoni) would also play Cobra's (Stallone) partner in Cobra (also starring Andrew Robinson) he also done a lot of other films (such as Guns of the Magnificent Seven, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Brewster's Millions, Summer Rental, Groundhog Day, The Brady Bunch Movie, Private Parts, Dr. Dolittle 1 & 2 as the voice of the rat) and TV shows (such as The Odd Couple, Hawaii Five-O, Miami Vice, Quantum Leap, NYPD Blue, Grey’s Anatomy and he's probably best known for playing Poppie on Seinfeld). He sadly passed away in 2020. The rest of the movies in the Dirty Harry series are.... *Magnum Force (1973) - Dirty Harry 2 *The Enforcer (1976) - Dirty Harry 3 *Sudden Impact (1983) - Dirty Harry 4 (and Clint Eastwood directed this one) *The Dead Pool (1988) - Dirty Harry 5 (and last film in the series).

i once heard that Andrew Robinson had trouble getting roles after this appearance, as casting agents still saw him as the Scorpio character and tended to want to type-cast him as a psycho. that's how good a performance it was.

I read that too. In a way it's a shem becase he's clearly a great actor, at the same time it really shows how great he was in this movie.

Hey Shandor, great reaction. Clearly Lethal Weapon owes a lot to this film as do many others. And you need to check out Bullitt with Steve McQueen which is a precursor to Dirty Harry (and it's also shot in San Francisco).

Andrew Robinson later played Garak on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He is easily the best reoccurring character in the franchise.

One of the greatest screen villains of all time. Andy Robinson is absolutely brilliant as Scorpio. So is Eastwood of course, but a movie like this needs a strong villain just as much as a hero, or even an anti-hero. The next two sequels - MAGNUM FORCE and THE ENFORCER - are on the same high standard as this. Essential viewing. I really enjoyed your reaction man.

Nice reaction Shandor! 🤠 I don’t think Clint Eastwood has ever made a bad movie. IMO MAGNUM FORCE is the best in the Dirty Harry series. Also I read it’s Clint’s favorite too. Super entertaining on a lot of levels.

I think the original is best, followed by (surprise) Sudden Impact. I used to like the Enforcer the best because its the first one I saw as a 11 year old. But as I grew older it is just above the last one that was made.

The first Three Harry films are excellent, the others not so much. In the 60s and 70s they didn't go in for the mindless, overdone action that pollutes so many movies today. It was about story and character, and action supported those elements. Bullitt and the French Connection are two other 60s, 70s police action dramas that you should see. Also, the director, Don Siegel, was close to Eastwood, and was a mentor to him. Siegel worked in the classic era of Hollywood, as an editor, and then as assistant director on many film noir and other B&W classics.
