I have a similar tank, and I find that with moderate light and weekly 50% water changes I have very few issues. At the same time, I have to accept that it won't be as pristine or lush as my high tech setup, but that's part of the charm

I've seen cost of DOAA nanos and while a gem, nearby LFS is making custom Optiwhite tanks for less. Again, it costs more to build an aquarium in the US or Japan and there's that brand extra. If I've seen it live in a shop, I'd probably get one. DOAA is like a Mercedes in the car world. Sadly in the Czech republic there are few shops which sells them, so I'd need to order online. It's a pity Lifestyle mags won't write more about shallow-tank paludariums and wabi-kusa like they do about kokedama and moss walls. People would put angelfish in a fishbowl and Betta in drinking glass as a decoration, instead of making something like this. :-/

Love this. Always thought about setting one up but assumed the maintenance would be a lot. Do you have to clean algae much in these setups? Can you use regular tap water without dechlorinating it - to prevent algae/cyano?

very nice. would be interesting how it looks now or in a month... because i think it has to be in the bin already. looks extremely difficult to clean, the plants down are hardly getting light and are maybe gone already, also don't see to many eco-aspects meaning a waterchange is necessary every 3rd day? are the stones green already? it is always nice to see and build things like this, but in the end it is also a ton, if not more, work and slowly goes away.

@@Cherrysams1 they don't owe you an answer lol. But yes, C. helferi can grow either emergently or submerged. You can clearly see from the rigid structure and darker color of the leaves (indicative of thicker cuticle) in this video that the plant is producing leaves meant to be in atmosphere rather than water.

We've seen the plant grow out a bit from the water, but not significantly. We observed that it tends to just lean down and go horizontal on the surface and then bend downwards. So I would say it does not really grow out of the water unless you somehow force it.
