I cannot express how grateful I am for you, Sooryagayathri. Growing up, my parents forced me to learn Carnatic music, and in those days I absolutely hated it. Music to me as a child simply meant just preparing for a concert, and I always hated that my Gurus never taught me the meaning of the songs. Eventually, after years of fighting, I was able to stop taking Carnatic classes. Many years passed, and one day, my whole perception of music changed. I had gone to see my nieces and nephews at my sister’s home, all of them singing along with you. I had never seen you or heard you before, but you immediately caught my attention. The way you sang with expression, the way you enjoyed singing, and the way you made my nieces and nephews happy made me understand what music really is. I found myself humming along sometimes even. It was an overwhelming feeling-full of happiness that I had finally found a way to enjoy music. Music is not meant to satisfy materialistic needs, yet quite the opposite. From the day I saw you sing, I started to sing again, this time, with emotion and devotion. In the past, I had only learned the technicalities of music. But because of you, I started learning how to express myself through music. Thank you, Sooryagayathri, for reinvigorating my love for music and helping me find the true meaning of music.
