I can see how Americans may be confused by Shakira’s style because they present her as 100% born and bred Colombian, but her name, dancing, and singing is obviously very middle eastern. I guess not a lot of US fans are aware that middle eastern/Lebanese culture makes up part of Colombian culture. Shakira is half Lebanese, and learned belly dancing all on her own. Shakira means a gift in Arabic. 25% of Colombians have some sort of Lebanese ancestry. :) Shakira is proud of her middle eastern and Latino roots. Mix that in with Haitian Kompa dancing and you have a beautiful mashup/diverse soup of culture!

Kenny Michael Alanya I know. I took belly dancing for 3-and-a-half years. In my life, I’ve also taken tap and ballet dancing. And I’ve usually been able to learn those dances fairly easily. However, belly dancing with a whole different story. It’s the hardest type of dancing I’ve ever tried. I disagree, however, that it takes a specific body type to do belly dancing. I was just curious why the commentor said that it affected the lungs, as if belly dancing uniquely affected the lungs. However, it could be said that all dancing affects the lungs, not just belly dancing.
