Shakespears Sister - Goodbye Cruel World
Музыка
Shakespears Sister "GBCW" was released as a single twice since the record company was so convinced of its success. In September of 1991 it reached # 56, and after the success of "Stay", it entered the Top 40 at # 32. The video.... it won the Best video nomination in 1992. The best video of the 90's, no doubt!!

Best pop video - ever. Period. Fabulous.
If modern pop was like this, I'd actually listen to it and care about the celebrities. . .

If so many people whine about it, I think it's true. :P But we're mainly referring to the mainstream music as you know (pop, R&B, hip hop). I never heard of Five Finger Death Punch before but his vocals sound great. I listen to more extreme and underground stuff like black metal, death, goth, and doom. But it was a nice listen. \m/

Sheer class, so glad they are back! Marcella's vocals on this blew my mind..
Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh. I miss the pre-Nirvana 1990s. Great sounds- the La's, Soup Dragons, Happy Mondays, Shakespeare's Sister, the Sundays... good times. Thanks for the vid, it sure takes me back.
This is perhaps the greatest video of the 1990s.
It's the DJ Kitty cameo that keeps me coming back year after year...Lets Go Rays! 💙
Amazing song !! Pure gold, both of them !!
When Shakespears sister got things right they really got it right. This is pop at it's best. Fantastic video as well. Shame Siobahn's ego & jealousy got in the way of this duo achieving what they were capable of.

+David Bennetts Agree 100 pct. They had such a good thing. Such great material.. Was it jealousy of the other girl's incredible talents (voice etc.)? It's too bad. They could've been successful for a longggg time.

+Stephen Silva Neither Siobhan or Marcella has ever gone into detail. There were tensions between them and other people around them may have contributed to that. I believe Siobhan was having substance abuse problems as well as emotional issues during that time so she wasn't in a good place which is sad since they made such a fantastic album, and her and Marcella were great together, creatively at least.

Siobahn was suffering from depression at the time, in those days nobody helped you, Christ, they still don't. And Marcy wasn't an angel either, she had her issues too.

Luv that lady jumping joyfully on the bed. She cheers me up!
rocked my cassette version all the time, lol, sure did
First time I've heard this in far too many years, forgotten how good it was, Brings back a lot of memories of listening to the album constantly
Their artistic expression and their opinions are just brilliant! Lady Gaga reminds me of them in her videos and they way they all express their opinion so metaphorically. Wish they'd come back so I could experience them!

I must say, one of the most underrated acts and videos ever. Absolutely LOVE ❤️ this!!!!!
This song is so damn catchy... I might have to buy this album.
They had their own unique style and sound!
Great band, brilliant song! It's a shame Marcella and Siobahn never patched things up and haven't spoken since 1993!! Hormonally yours is a fantastic album! 1992 I miss you and I love you!!!
bewitching.....and all that black glitter !!
This is my first time listening to them and I like it
Me, 25 years later. It took some time but here I am. Still listen to them. I bought this the first time it was released. I think it's my favourite.
OMG I loved this band back in the day. So glad I found them!!!
I have this entire album memorized. Awww, memories!
Criminally underrated band, and the Baby Jane opening is hilarious.

@Francis McMenamin The "But ya ARE, Marce, ya ARE stuck behind that guitar!" line is a take-off from "What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?": Blanche Hudson (Joan Crawford): "You wouldn't be able to do these awful things to me if I weren't still in this chair." "Baby Jane" Hudson (Bette Davis): "But ya ARE, Blanche. Ya ARE are in that chair!" :D
I absolutely love Siobhan and Marcella, a pair of fabulous singers. Love their characters. Eventhough their relationship came to hatrid they dont show it in their videos, well except when they r supposed to have things against eachother. Lol. :) .x.
Siobhan Fahey is sooo stunning and brilliant she reinvented herself and did it right
Awesome song!
I so miss the early 90's. The videos were awesome.
Clearly the best song and video ever. I love Siobhan in this, STUNNING! Should have been a massive hit.
My favorite song by this group. So glad they're getting back together. 😁
My favourite part is when the short haired one sings "You left me outside in the rain!" It sounds cool.

discovered SS again....so awesome a pairing and all who worked on the album deserve respect. at a time when there was a LOT of shite music it said a lot for 2 women ni there mid to late 30's to be different AND succesful. Brilliant.

actually the quote comes from "Sunset Boulevard", when Norma Desmond says: I made you and I can break you whenever I want. See that...? actually, Siobhan plays a Norma Desmond wonderfully... and the visual references of the video are Sunset Boulevard and Citizen Kane
i love this video and the "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" Theme

TheresOnlyOneIanGere The Spice Girls wrote most of their own songs.. Mel C is actually a pretty strong singer, and Mel B/Emma are decent. Plus they are the most successful girlband ever, so they didn't fail at anything.

Android18uk Shakespeare's Sister wrote all their owe music. Siobhan Fahey is very successful and has been for a very long time. She was in Bananarama though out the 80's. Anyways as far as the Spice Girls being the most successful girl band ever, that's hard to believe considering they were more or less a one hit wonder.
i love this lady! She is heaps freaky and gorgeous...
Wow. They were utterly ignored in the US (I've never heard of them until a French and Saunders parody), but this music so encapsulates the best sounds/arrangements of 90s alt-rock-pop. This is great stuff! Why the hell weren't they huge here?
These girls are awesome
This is their best one. I loved this when it came out. Pity it didn't do well in the charts.
Does anybody here detect the DNA of Bowie's "Heroes" in the instrumentalization of this song? I love this group btw. Saw them live in NYC during their tour around the time this album came out. Never forgot it.
You Can Have Us and with All of Our Authority In MusicVideos but 'Ken You Turn Up The Volume!..(I Love Shakespear's Sister!...Rock n Roll!!!)..was that a 20's hit on a recipe?

Great vocal arrangements. Siobhan sure has a penchant for wearing long flowing gowns and dresses. Actually, this looks sexier than if she were wearing a miniskirt and g-string. Every S.S video I've seen is always shot in black & white. I guess that makes it more haunting.

Epic album. TIMELESS. Just received the Stay CD single in the mail. I used to have it on cassette but with moving over the decades I lost it. I love how it featured short snippets of the songs from their album. Not fond of the newer version of the songs on Hormonally Yours. The originals are better.
i just dont understand why they werent bigger then they should have been their voices alone were great and so diffrent then any thing i have ever heard then or since
this is excellent i never even knew about this band when they were in their heyday; was I in a cave?
God, was it REALLY 1991 ????? .... a lifetime ago.... :(
no shakespears sister cruel world don't say goodbye
Siohan can really make you feel spooked by her face, it looks like evil, but in a good way. Gr8 vid and song though.
By the comments I'm reading, it seems that NO One knows who the other singer is. Her name is Marcy Levy. She sang background on the song "Lay Down Sally" with Eric Clapton & did a duet with Alice Cooper on a song called Millie & Billy from his album called "From The Inside"....PLUS she's had her own solo stuff.
@madsketcher i had the album as a kid and wore out 3 tapes lol I'v relay have got to find and buy it

@Hollybeth84 well the part during the bridge when Marcy hits the high E is similar to the opera scene in Kane, Oz similar in the mix of black and white and color together, and Marcy on the bed at the end is nearly exactly like Delphine Serig in Marienbad...
God, Siobhan was gorgeous.
