    The interiors of this episode were filmed in Los Angeles and the exteriors in London. So when Columbo walks outside he has traveled almost 6,000 miles.

    The idea behind the umbrella story is that in London, it rains all the time, hence the scenario involving an umbrella.

    Maybe a flipped shot?

  • @AndrewHeller-jn7dx

    @AndrewHeller-jn7dx

    The reason is much simpler than flipped images. Very plainly the answer is that for the thumbnail shots the owner of the rights to these episodes; use shots taken of the shooting set, using Falk's standin; not using Falk himself; &, not all that strange when you know the trick. Nearly every actor has a stand-in, for when they can't or don't want to be on set, until actual shooting begins.

    No. Columbo was simply playing on their fears a pearl might have dropped into the umbrella during the fight. So he flicked a pearl he had earlier found in her dressing room into the umbrella when nobody was looking, and they did the rest.

    @@MRSyonicBoom But he only shows how he put the pearl into the cup to the other cop after everybody else had left. So the murderer not knowing that, would have assumed it got there by accident during the fight. So unless the other cop testifies as to how Columbo put the pearl into cup or the umbrella, it cannot be proven he put the pearls there.

    First off, from the very moment that the pearl dropped from the umbrella, both suspects should have clammed up and exercised their right to legal counsel. Secondly, given that the evidence, by Columbo's own admission was planted, a good lawyer would have very easily secured verdicts of 'not guilty.'

    I always thought that too. It relied on them confessing then and there so if they remained silent or accused Columbo of putting the pearl there, his plan would have fallen apart.

    Is it legal in England to plant evidence? I remember Ross Martin accused Columbo of touching the paintings so his prints would prove that Ross was framing his relative for the murder. Then Columbo pulled his hands out of his pockets revealing gloves.

    There is no way anybody could prove the pearl was put into the umbrella by Columbo, even the Scotland Yard detective thought it had accidently fallen into the umbrella during the fight. Nobody there noticed Columbo flick the pearl into the umbrella, and the guy Jones is prepared to testify that nobody but himself touched that umbrella.

    There was a variation of that in an episode called "A Friend Indeed", where the deputy police commissioner plants jewellery stolen by a serial burglar in an apartment he thought was that of the burglar he was trying frame for his wife's murder. Columbo had altered the police report to make it look like an apartment he had just rented was where the burglar lived.

    This was a mediocre episode in my opinion. I do remember Richard Basehart as Admiral Nelson as commander of the futuristic submarine in voyage to the bottom of the sea, one of my favourite sci-fi series growing up, He was also in the pilot episode of the original Knight Rider show and was the narrator at the beginning of each episode. Honor Blackman I remember was in the British1960's avengers TV series before Diana Rigg took over. She was also in one of the James Bond Movies.

    One of the poorer episodes. I often see excuses made for the terrible, super hammy performances in this episode that the characters, as Actors, were supposed to be larger than life - no. You're seeing the characters in their own private moments, yet they continue with bug-eyed shrieking, like they're in some Vaudeville show playing to the cheap seats at the back, rather than starring in a series that was well established by that stage. As bad as the final series' episodes were, This is a rare stinker from relatively early in the Columbo run.
