This is the best analysis of this poem that I have found on You Tube. I just want to add one more thing to this. There are 154 Sonnets published under the name of Shakespeare. They fall into three groups. The first 17 poems are to a young man, telling him that it is really time that he got married and started a family. This seems like a fairly normal concern, particularly if the young man was the eldest son of a noble house, whose family needed an Heir to inherit estate, wealth and title. But.... Shakespeare is not focussed on these concerns, but on the preservation of the young person's physical beauty, which will fade, and only be sustained in the beauty of his children. Sonnet 18 is all about the person's beauty.... with no further reference to reproduction. It is also one of several which refer, like 116, to the Poet himself as the writer. There follows a series of passionate love poems to a young man ... and we have no way of knowing whether it is the same beautiful young man as that of the first group, or a different man entirely.. We only know that it is indeed a man and that the Poet is totally obsessed!. Is the love ever physically consummated? We are not told. ("a marriage of true minds") Does the lover remain "true"? Most definitely not! Sonnet 116 comes towards the end of the cycle of the poems to the young man, and before the Poet becomes fascinated, and seduced by the mysterious "Dark Lady" .... Oh Dear! ... it doesn't quite end there. The Poet finishes with two poems that suggest that in the heat of love, (and under the influence of Cupid) he really could not help himself at all! The point that I want to make here is with reference to the lines ....... I never writ, nor no man ever loved." This can indeed be interpreted as "I never wrote anything, or any man ever loved anybody." but it might equally well be interpreted as " I never wrote anything, and I have never loved a man (such as I love you)"

Thanks so much for your great exploration! I enjoy learning the Sonnets by heart to recite aloud. You gave me all sorts of great ideas here to shape my intonations and inflections for a live performance. Your explanation of this Sonnet's rhyming couplet unexpectedly brought to mind Sonnet 18, in which the craft of writing also plays a major part in how the "speaker" approaches love. Although in plain view, I wouldn't have made that connection, save for your video. So again, many thanks!

Wow!! Shakespeare, man!! That's too much to understand..
I stumbled across your Shakespeare monologue and really loved it! We are doing a collaborative project for Shakespeare's birthday and are collecting youtube monologues for April 23. Would you be willing to let us showcase your monologue on our channel? Please send your original video file or a direct link to your monologue on KZread to: THEDIGITALSTAGE@GMAIL.COM with a message granting us "permission to upload and use your performance as part of the Shakes450 Project." Or if you're feeling ambitious, you can send us a brand-new speech :-) Thank you for your time and talent and we look forward to including you in our collection!
next time please try not making it so long, just say it's true meaning not 50 different things it could implement.
