As for #2 talent, I believe RAW you can chose a category - so you can chose an item wizard can actually use.

Dang that makes it much more helpful then. I’ll have to go back to the rules and read them again. Maybe I missed a few other points. But there’s no way to control how powerful it would be right? You can still roll a stinker?

But that ring, you mentioned, might actually be useful - for example you might "plant" it on target of future poisoning (for example I can imagine some vain/greedy merchant, noble or bandit king/queen being given that ring before a poisoning attempt). Yes very situational, but still :-D

Something that I think Shadowdark includes an a potentially interesting ambiguous ruling. Can a wizard learn a higher tier spell from a scroll than they can know per their advancement table? I think it could make for a potential epic spell mishap for the level 1 wizard when they flub their high level spell they managed to learn and gate in a demon or cause an arcane explosion.

If it was just a level higher than what they could usually cast I'd probably rule that they could cast it from a scroll. But I'd give them disadvantage trying to learn it. Ultimately though, a GM giving PC's access to magic scrolls at higher level should at least give them a chance to use them. Same as if a GM gave a Fighter PC a +3 Sword at low level.

In my game the wizard can learn any tier spell off of a scroll. The danger involved in casting a high tier spell with low hit points and low spell casting bonus balances out any high tier spell

You know... with a costume like that? I actually DO think I want to be a wizard.
