Shadowbringers broke me | 5.0 Ending Reaction | Final Fantasy XIV

Ойындар

There's no way FF14 can top this moment. This story is absolutely incredible.
We met with Emet in the recreated city of Amaurot, knowing what had to be done after his sudden betrayal. We took a trip down a memory lane of his design before meeting with Hades in the Dying Gasp and bringing a conclusion to Shadowbringers 5.0.

A lesser known, but crucial point in Emet's view of mankind is his deliberate creation of flawed societies. From the Allagans to the Garleans, each empire's fate was doomed from the beginning. This has only reinforced his bias against mankind, and drove him further into madness.

This honestly hadn't occurred to me but in hindsight you're completely right. I'd love to have seen a peaceful, loving emet from countless lifetimes ago as he gives us a fair chance. I feel like while we can all agree that Emet's active genocide of millions is objectively horrible, we all can empathize with him. Imagine it: your family and friends, all living peacefully. No conflict, everything resolved fairly and kindly. Nobody goes hungry, nobody is made out to be inferior from another. Then the Final Days come, and you sacrifice 75% of your number just to keep the world alive. You make the hard choice of sacrificing some of the other people left on the planet to bring your people back. But the remaining half of them disagree with your plan, summon a god, and she splits nearly everyone's souls and the planet itself into 13.. All 13 of them become individuals, completely unrecognizable to you, and you to them. You spend millenia trying to gauge their worth. You live side by side with them. Share meals with them. Go on adventures. Time and time again. What happens in each generation? Infighting, war, corruption, chaos. Empires rise and fall. Not even remotely akin to the utopia you once knew. What do you do? Do you resign yourself to the fact that the world will forever be rocked by conflict? Or do you say "No, I want to bring that utopia back. I've had enough of these bumbling idiots that are doomed to make the same mistakes over and over." He's such a fantastic villain because he has a point - to us, who have never known what he has, of course we think our cause is greater. But to him, who effectively lived in a paradise, we are all nothing but disappointments.

  • @terabellum

So. Well. Worded. What a beautifully written "villain".

  • @rptrrwr

    @rptrrwr

    Жыл бұрын

Part of it sadly is also his inability to comprehend mankind's flaws. Like talking about betrayal and infighting, etc. That thought is almost completely alien to him. Being a person from a perfect paradise, the idea of someone starving or hurting someone else isn't just impossible: it's non-existent. How does someone even BEGIN. to understand how someone could do something like that, out of desperation, let alone greed. Of course he would view us as inferior beings not worthy of anything. He had hope, but these unfathomable events continue to happen millennia after millennia. Honestly I don't think I see him as hateful or spiteful. More like he's heartbroken: that this is what happened to all the people he cared for and loved. To be reminded of that for eons would be enough for anyone to want to do away with it. The fact that he even says he "welcomed death's sweet embrace" means hes actually tried to give it all up before. But his love and feeling of duty to the amaurotines is so strong he can't give up. For them. I don't think anyone could possibly understand how much pain emet is in. He builds an entire city and puts shadows of his people in it. To remind him of what he lost and what his goal is. Not sure I could deal with that kind of self-flagellation on a daily basis for a week, let alone as long as he has. This type of thing is what makes emet such a good character and why it is so easy to love him.

Fate may be cruel, but a smile better suits a hero." -> "Keep your head high through the tough times, keep smiling for yourself and others" "I'm not asking to be saved. Agreed. The first one is telling her that she shouldn't blame herself. She will do all she can, and even if she can't save you, she should keep moving forward. The second one is comforting her by letting her know you've accepted your fate, no matter what it may be. You won't blame her. Both are valid.

"We only cried a lot, a whole lot." Welcome to Shadowbringers. "It looks like a modern cityscape, only with some extra fluff." There's a fan theory that FF14 takes place in the future. That we evolved into Ascians, then the Sundering happened. Hence why Amaurot looks like a modern city, because it is. Another thing to note is that Emet loved Varis's father and had high hopes for him. But sadly he died young and Emet lost what little faith in humanity he had left. Which might be when he died he sat back and allowed his other son and his grandson Varis duke it out for the throne.

Trivia: The design on Hades' left hand (36:53) is based upon a Spider Lily, in Japanese called "Higanbana", or "Flower of The Distant Shore", so named because it was believed that they grew on the shore of the other side of Sanzu no Kawa, the river separating the realm of the living from the realm of the dead... Appropriate, considering that Hades is the name of the god and realm of the dead in Hellenistic mythology, which also had a river, Styx, marking the border between the realms of the living and the dead.

You're saying Emet's math doesn't add up when he says he'll sacrifice the rest of the inhabitants to revive his friends. But it does though. As you said, we are fragments of the souls of his friends. So by sacrificing us and everyone else, all the fragments of souls will go back together, so the revival will bring back the "whole" souls. If we were left alive, then they would only be 13/14th of a soul.

Either the player burns out in ARR or they reach heavensward, and they become a walking advertisement for the game. (Like me, haha.) If they make it through ARR, they are rewarded with some of the best and most complicated feelings in gaming. I've never seen a game reward player investment quite like this before.

The thing I love about Emet, and it's something I've argued with a lot of people about, is that we don't have to ask ourselves if we'd do the same in his place. We literally have. He saw his world destroyed in the Sundering, and in the wake of that destruction rose up lesser, degenerate lifeforms. Diminished mockeries of the mankind he knew, us. Now he wants to restore the world to what it once was, and in the process is willing to dispose of those distorted beings to make way for the return of people, proper and true. We saw the First destroyed in the Flood of Light, and in the wake of that destruction rose up lesser, degenerate lifeforms. Diminished mockeries of the mankind we know, the sin eaters. Now we want to restore the world to what it once was, and in the process is willing to dispose of those distorted beings to make way for the return of people, proper and true. He presents a compelling mirror to us, but by virtue of our respective origin points, our goals are fundamentally incompatible.

we literally dont, you cannot compare the first and the world unsundered. Sin Eater are abnormal, unnature creatures that exist in a nihilistic nature as much as the voidsent of 13th. Only difference between the two is that the 1st still have common souls to be infested by the Light and therefore worth salvaging while the 13th is entirely corrupted. The world Unsundered is not an unnatural creation, it is utopia, harmonic, cycle, just as much as the Source. Emet is willing to go length to restore his people if it’s the lost of an entire ‘other world, it’s like if you would restore the First back to it’s entirety if you must completely sacrifice half of the Source, or leaves Etheirys and follow the Loporrit to travel across the sea of star if it means abandoning every reflections to it’s fate.

@@holmesholmes.8784 You may want to take another pass at reading comprehension on my original post. I didn't compare the corrupted First to the World Unsundered. I compared our view of the post-Flood First to Emet's view of the post-Sundering Source. Both are worlds full of "abnormal, unnatural creatures that exist in a nihilistic nature". To the point, Emet (originally) viewed us the same way we view Sin Eaters (or voidsent). He was willing to sacrifice us to restore his world to its pre-cataclysmic state, in the same way we're willing to sacrifice the sin eaters to restore the First to its pre-Flood state.

@@alden2085 even though he view us the same way we view the sin eater. It’s very quickly to justify that Our view is correct and his isn’t no matter who is arguing on which side and that’s the ultimate border to separate our similarity. We are not “sacrificing” the sin eater, sin eaters are literally the bane of existence created from existence, we are killing it like vermin because we have to otherwise the world is gone. Emet Selch was eradicating intelligence sapients creatures, humans because his species was better. We weren’t killing sin eater to restore the First, we were killing it because otherwise it Will kill us, it’s a struggle to survive. Emet was killing us because He and His is better than us.

There are no errors in Emet's math. They do explain it in ShB but not very well. A much more complete explanation follows. But basically, the people who were sacrficed to Zodiark, didn't return to the lifestream and get Sundered with the rest of the world. They're part of him, trapped in him. Offering up other souls will free them to be reborn. Even if Big Z can't literally bring them back to life exactly as they were, worst case scenario is they'll just get to reincarnate. Which for Emet would still be a Win.

"Weary wandered...you've no fight left to fight! No life left to live!" Go back and re-watch Shadowbringers' trailer now. Now! DO IT NOW! :D I still love the contrast of this whole culmination. In Rak'tika: "Because this is our history. Our story." Here at the end. "This is our future. Our story." Also the little details... "Let us cast aside titles and pretense" The Trial has no title, just "Hades" Where Titan's trial says "Titan | Lord of Crags" and the like, this one literally does away with titles as he said. And of course as others likely have mentioned....you've passed the trial. You've proven yourself to carry on the weight of the future. In the final moments, Emet-Selch is no longer hunched over, no longer bearing the weight of centuries and millennia on his shoulders. The burden is now yours to bear. Now listen to Tomorrow and Tomorrow and pay close attention to the lyrics. And lastly...Ardbert's axe in the final scene. No longer stained.

For a lot of people Emet hit really hard but nothing hits harder than watching Ardbert finally reuniting with his party, that broke my soul the first time i saw it. Also, grats on finishing 5.0, ShB isn't done yet so tight your seat belt.

Something to know about the ending: Remember all the way back in A Realm Reborn, it was established that Ascians are effectively immortal and their souls cannot be destroyed unless trapped. Emet-Selch destroyed the white auracite binding him, he wasn't trapped at the end and we had no way of permanently destroying him; but he still died. This means that he chose to die, and to leave their legacy and the future in our hands.
