Shadow Weaver & Her Symbolism Explained! (Lightspinner) | She-ra Princesses of Power

Ойын-сауық

Out of the big bad villains in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Shadow Weaver is probably the most dynamic. The fallen Lightspinner has a fascinating duality that culminates in arguably one of the biggest redemption arcs of the entire series. I’m Whitney Van Laningham, and this is Shadow Weaver’s history and symbolism explained.

Shadow Weaver is a very complex character. I believe that she had good intentions in the later half of the show, but she didn't acknowledge her own flaws and thus never improved herself. She still was an extremely toxic, abusive and selfish person that was hated by everyone in her life, even those she cared about. And she realized that at the very end, which was what led to her ultimate sacrifice. Is that a redemption arc? not really, but it is an heroic, even if somewhat selfish, sacrifice. And yes only Shadow Weaver could make an inherently selfless act into a selfish one with that last "you are welcome". She died well, but she lived poorly.

Please go back and watch the flashback episode her origin story she is the very essence of selflessness all she wanted to do was to get stronger and use that strength to fight The Horde no one had any new plans no one had any good teamwork no one had anything that was going to tip the tide in this constant War she was the only one coming up with fresh ideas. The only sorcerer that was becoming more and more legendary but she hit a brick wall in her magical advancement no one else had any fucking ideas on how to protect their Planet but her lightspinner's idea didn't hurt anyone but herself and potentially the person that helps her cast spell to strengthen her magic she is in no way shape or form selfish even when she was bitter after the failing of the spell which was 100% Michaels fault because he bailed in the middle of casting and she suffered for it but I will say that she shouldn't have involved a child in that spell but that's besides the point she join The Horde slightly out of bitterness also because everyone shunned her for trying to do what's best for the planet but even when she was working with hordak she was trying to obtain power to destroy him she never agree with his ideology she never wanted him to be in control of the horde she was constantly trying to get stronger to kill him to get rid of The Horde that's why she kept experimenting with the black Garnet not for his sake personal power but for her own to be strong enough to destroy him

@@jonathannelson6841 And none of that changes the issue she was a toxic person to everyone she interacted with: Catra, Adora, Micah, Glimmer. Moreover yes she wanted fight the Horde, yes she wanted to free the magic and yes she had no loyalty whatsoever to Hordak. But that is no the "essence of selflessness", as she had the most selfish approach to each one of those goals which was harnessing power for herself while disregarding the well-being of everyone else. She was so willing to sacrifice everyone, it was only so fitting that at the end she sacrificed herself. Also the failure with the spell of obtainment was her 100% own fault, because she was the one that decided to involve a child.

@@tyran6444 I agree her approach was selfish but only because when she was the only one that was coming up with new plans at the time no one supported her so she had to do whatever was necessary because she had no back up and everyone else just had their thumbs up their asses they are at war she did whatever she had to do to help the people of the people even if that means sacrificing some or manipulating others when the leaders of the planet are too incompetent to do anything useful and your by yourself you have to be and act a certain way I can't remember if goku said this in the majin but saga or in GT but the saying was "if I don't who will" shadow weaver is the goddamn personification of that phase she literally sacrificed her own morality for her planet literally her name went from "light spinner" to "shadow weaver" she metaphorically gave her soul to end this war and save her people

because shadow weaver's character is such a huge part of the abuse narrative in she-ra, i would be careful about saying she 'redeemed' herself to catra and adora; an abuser doesn't 'redeem' themselves to their victims by doing one good thing and the fact that adora + catra seemed to care about shadow weaver when she took over fighting that monster (telling her not to do it, crying after she died), to me, felt more like how children of abusers have complicated feelings about their abuser when said abuser dies.

In my opinion, she wasn't really an abuser, her *dark side* was. Light spinner wouldn't have abused anyone but ever since she made that dark spell and joined the Horde, she hasn't been the same as she use to be. When Catra strikes on her mask, the gem thingy is broken and shadow weaver becomes weaker, she joins the Rebellion's side and you see the Light Spinner personality that appears in her.

@@eterniaaaa I think it's understandable to see this side but I do think that her abusiveness (specifically verbal, mental, emotional) is present even when she was Light Spinner. Like when she was performing the Spell of Obtainment with Micah, there were points where Micah wanted to stop and she forced him to keep going and was verbally hostile. I agree that the Spell of Obtainment and time in the Horde made her worse characteristics more present but I don't think that she was meant to be read as a wholly good person when she was Light Spinner.

What I like about Shadow Weaver as a character is that she never got a redemption arc, she just thinks she did. Throughout the series SW thinks only in terms of power. She joins whichever side is the strongest and take on mentees with high potential to further herself by proxy as she then manipulates them to act as extensions of herself. She does this while abusing ones with low potential. Shadow Weaver sees her switch to the princess alliance and training glimmer as all she needed for redemption without ever repenting upon the abuse she inflicted on Adora and Catra. ANd even when she's training Glimmer it's more like using her as a battery, especially at the end of season three and then a political puppet in season 4. Yes Shadow Weaver does forgo the power at the end of season five to save Catra but that's only because she knew she'd die if she took the power as established earlier in the season. She knew it had to be Adora, whom she still sees as an extension of her will, who had to take the power but she only now realized she had to be nice to catra before Adora would do that. I think the only thing Shadow weaver really learns in the series is that she was wrong about love making someone weak. But she still only ever acted to give herself and mentees the most power possible.

  • @doodars9357

    @doodars9357

Agreed. I think the only reason she sacrificed herself was because she was in a checkmate position: - take the hearts power for herself-dead - let Catra die - Adora wouldn’t take it aka dead - do nothing - Hordak wins aka dead Basically she’d die in any situation, doing it this way would mean that everyone lives, magic is restored, and in my opinion is just one more way to twist the knife in Catra and Adoras issues towards her

Where is everyone getting these weird ass Notions that shadow Weaver is just hungry for power for herself it's like everyone keeps forgetting the entire reason she wants to be stronger it's to help destroy the horde it's like everyone's missing those few key words she doesn't want the power for herself she already knows she's a badass sorceress she knows that she can only go so far as every sorcerer will hit a brick wall because they don't have the innate magic princess have all sorceress understand this she only wants to break those limits to help the fucking planet when she was mentoring Micah as lights winner it wasn't to further her achievement it's because the curriculum for teaching young sorceress won't allow them to blossom into their full potential both Micah and light spinner knew that she didn't want to ride the coattails of Micah she just wanted to do what every Mentor wants to do Unleashed there trainees full potential she had no intention of riding his clout she had no intention of siphoning off his magic she had no intention of doing anything malicious or selfish with any of her mentors as light spinner now what she did the catra was horrible what she did to adora was horrible what she did to glimmer it was morally gray I feel like she genuinely wanted to teach her because she's Michaels daughter but she was in a very desperate need to secure her own power and safety against hordak and potentially other people in glimmers Kingdom cuz castaspella was honestly going to kill that bitch at some point at least that's the Vibes that everyone was giving off that they don't trust her and she needs to die so what she did to glimmer it was purely out of Self preservation not greed she's not greedy or power-hungry for herself she only wants to get stronger to destroy the horde and protect our planet I don't understand why people keep vilifying her in ways that she doesn't need to be vilified she's an abuser of catra and adore she manipulated those two only why are people adding on extra shit she genuinely sacrificed herself because that's what she knew was the right thing to do they were in a race against the clock and the enemies they were fighting we're going to eat up too much time she knew how the heart of Adora and Catra work so she threw herself at a very powerful foe and kamikazes herself it wasn't because she was cornered if that's the case she wouldn't reveal her face and she wouldn't have shed tears

I don't really know if I'd call Shadow Weaver's final moment a redeeming moment at all. There isn't anything really indicating she *meant* what she said to Catra, but she DOES have years of grooming built up to know that both of the girls are incredibly vulnerable to her praise - Catra especially. She knew Adora wouldn't finish the mission without Catra, she didn't have the same leverage or power anymore to force any other outcome, and she was willing to say anything to get the mission accomplished. It's not like she could take the power of Etheria for herself at this point, anyways. Now, you might say that it was heroic for her to sacrifice her life - perhaps it was. But to me, it really felt more like a move to seize control of her posthumous narrative. If she is going to die either way, better to be remembered in a more charitable light than as an abuser and a war criminal. Obviously this is a subjective viewing of the show and the character, but that's...just kind of what being the child of a manipulative narcissist is like. Catra and Adora will never really know if Shadow Weaver was sincere in anything she was doing in her final moments, but you've got to take the closure you can get.

She was so obsessed with grooming Adora that she rejected, neglected, verbally abused, emotionally abused and even physically abused Catra throughout the ENTIRE series. I feel that, though it was a noble sacrifice and was ultimately the deciding factor, her giving up her life was not a very good apology for years of every kind of abuse imaginable inflicted upon Catra for God knows what reason.

I would best describe shadow weaver as the ultimate fall from grace character. She fell from grace in mysticor, she fell from grace in the horde, she fell from grace in the rebellion, and most importantly she fell from grace with Adora. Not to mention shadow weaver was responsible for so much of the damage in the relationship between Adora and Catra from how she raised them to how she influenced their choices in the present. In the end, while I do not think shadow weaver was worthy of redemption, I do think that she was somewhat redeemed in the end. Shadow Weaver did want to stop horde prime, even if she had ulterior motives. I also felt she had a proper send off, and I was glad that Adora and Catra cried tears for her.

@@kitcharlene8482 (baseline info to know: Hordak hates lying and hiding the truth because of his experience with Prime where he can read the clones thoughts, or maybe even reveal them to other clones to shame seid offending clone. This is also why his relationship with Entrapta works so well, they never really lie to eachother. When one needs an explanation (cough Hordak's decaying body cough) the other gives it. Now onto the on topic stuff) He suffocated Catra because she lied to and hid the truth from him, which is very important to him because of the reasons stated above and also she *lost* the only person in the Horde who could do magic (they still needed the Black Garnet and Scorpia can only really shoot lightning). Also, Catra killed people too tf?? She sent Entrapta to Beast Island (which is a death sentence and only two people seemed to have survived on it, Micah and Entrapta), raided and destroyed Mermista's kingdom (which involved killing people), and basically almost destroyed the entirety of Etheria/reality because of her obsessive resentment of Adora (which kinda killed everyone besides Adora, Catra, and Angella but then even Angella had to stay behind basically forever to stabilize reality). With the whole Shadow Weaver situation, it's Shadow Weaver can you blame him? But he knew that she was abusing cadets/soldiers/underlings in *his* name A.K.A lying which is a big nono in the Horde. He never straight-up killed her because (besides Scorpia who wasn't connected to her runestone until the end of season 4) Shadow Weaver was the *Only* magic user in the Horde, so she could either escape his death plan or overpower him outright. And iirc i don't remeber any *abuse* of Shadow Weaver, just seeing through her bs way of claiming credit and imprisoning her for lying to him (not outright killing her for the above reasons). So yeah, I don't believe that you can hold one of the three up on death and abuse when All Three of These People have been guilty for that. (Also if the fucking Diamonds could be redeemed then he can just be happy with Entrapta)

When she sacrificed herself for Catra, I said, 'well good! that is the VERY LEAST you can do for those poor girls after all the terrible things you'd done to them!' and even then, I wonder if it was more of a tactical decision to get Adora to the end than an emotional decision for Catra's sake -_- I couldn't help but think she would rather die than try to make nice with them anyway

And when she sacrifices her it wasn't a selfless action, first of all she was drunk, and second though she did it in part to save etheria, she said "you're welcome" guys like, she saved the world, like was a good mom, she never said she was sorry, she never regretted anything, she did it to twist catra's and adora's minds and make her seem redeemed

I don't think she had a redemption arc - more the opposite. I think she exposed through her interactions with the rebels, and especially when Catra returned, was that she was always going to be manipulative and self serving. She didn't change even when she was on the right side of the battle. She's like the opposite of Scorpia who spends most of the show being the purest character even while serving the Horde. Its a great lesson to learn. I think it was at the heart when Adora turned back for Catra that Shadow Weaver finally realized that she hadn't changed. She still only knew how to solve problems by taking more control for herself. What I feel was sad about her death wasn't that she redeemed herself in the end, but that she didn't...

you simply must talk aboout Catra!!! Shadow Weaver is an ambiguous character: the moment she sacrificed herself, she understood that she had become an empty shell, that after her accident, the search for power led her to be consumed by it, and I think she was serious when in the second season said she saw herself in Catra, they both want power and are willing to do anything to get what they want. Except that Catra understood what she really wanted, but Shadow Weaver did not ... so in my opinion when she told our kitten that she was proud of her, she was saying it seriously, that is "I am proud that you did not let yourself be consumed so deeply to become an empty shell, don't be like me. " She hated Catra mainly because in her heart she regretted what had happened to her, what she became and vented her on Catra, the person closest to what she once was.

I wonder how the spell of obtainment would've turned out too. However, it was a magical parasite, and parasites need hosts (it just happened to be Light Spinner after Micha got away. And was it reaching for Micah first because his inherent magical nature was more potent than Light Spinner's?) But like you said, "what if?" I think Light Spinner always wanted more power (albeit she hid it well at first). To me, the Horde invasion was an excuse she used to get that power (although I do feel she cared for Etheria as well). And she lightly touched on her hardships coming into her own to Catra when she was in a prison cell at the Horde. But she manipulated a child, played favorites, would berate Micah for his natural talent, and joined the horde out of spite (after killing her first "boss"). And I do think the guild at Mystacor and the rest of Etheria had serious socio-political issues even before the Horde came. I like her character outside of the issues and abuse she inflicted. Not debating just having dialogue.

Honestly, as fascinating as shadow weaver was, she didn’t deserve a redemption. I never wanted her to have a redemption. One of the things that I really appreciated about this show was the message that you don’t have to forgive your abusers, and the differences they showed between “parent who might be annoying but overall is a decent parent” and “abuser”. So often, abusive parents in fiction are often redeemed and even “justified” because “they were trying their best”. Maybe this is just me because I had to work for years to bring myself to a point where I could be mad and stop desperately wanting a relationship with certain people, but.. The message that you should always forgive your abusers is just not a good message.

Shadow Weaver wore her mask kinda like Catra wore hers. To hide who they were by who they wanted to be. Also I think Shadow Weavers sacrifice may have stemmed from Adora telling her that she ruins everything and every chance anyone could be happy. I think she knew that Catra and Adora loved each other and when she sacrifices herself to save them its her way of saying that she is no longer there to ruin things for people. She tells Catra "Its too late for me but for you, its only the beginning for you" I think she knew that 1. she could never be fully redeemed and 2. that Catra and Adora were going to have a future together. Shadow Weaver also goes on to take off her mask and say "your welcome" and a lot of people perceived that as her saying your welcome for abusing them but I think that it is her saying your welcome as in I am doing you a favor and getting out of the way. I am giving you two the chance to be happy without me there to ruin it. She seems to show genuine emotion during her sacrifice. Telling Catra to run with Adora, crying when shes telling Catra to listen to her and that she can go no further, she genuinely seems to be happy and proud when she tells Catra that she is so proud of her, and she seems to be happy while saying your welcome before dropping her mask and sending the final blow which ends in her death. She's come so far from when we see her in S1. She's learned to kinda accept the failure of the obtainment spell by stating that she is paying the price and she learned to accept the fact that she does ruin any chance for people to be happy. I love her character to me shes so well written and I think that what she did to Catra and Adora while they were growing up played a big role in there characters not only in a way of trauma but there personalities and how they act together and apart.

She showed clear distain for her up to her final sacrifice. Even trying to push Adora away from her. I feel like her final sacrifice was still selfish and manipulative. She made a big show of saving Catra and including her right then (and only then) because she finally saw Catra as not dead weight to Adora, but probably the only person that could save her. So she gave Catra affirmation, only to give her the confidence she needed to save Adora. It was still about Adora. While it was a big step for her to realize she wasn't the one Adora needed, and that Catra was. She still didn't really make any attempts to mend all she did to Catra.

I wouldn't call her death a redemption (unless you mean her joining the rebellion, which no, she joins purely for herself and trains glimmer purely to control her power, just like with her father and continues to mess with and abuse adora and catra). Maybe a realisation that adora needed catra to access she-ra and had only one option left, if she survived then maybe she would have had a redemption but really she wasn't a good person when she died (unlike characters like vader), as shown by her last words, it's still about her and honestly I think her kind words to catra were just one last manipulation to get her to unlock she-ra.

I read Shadow Weaver as someone who had always wanted to protect Etheria, and what made her a villain was her belief that any atrocity committed to that end was acceptable. This included convincing Glimmer to use Etheria's core as a weapon, a decision that caused a break in Glimmer's relationship with Bow which took them a few episodes to heal. Shadow Weaver's last words to Adora and Catra were "You're welcome," not "I'm sorry." This makes me think that she didn't regret mistreating or misleading them, which makes me wonder if sacrificing herself was truly an act of redemption, or did she simply accomplish her goal, which happened to be the same as the good guys. Her decision to take in baby Adora in seems to suggest that she knew more about Etheria's history and nature, and what lay beyond, than she let on. Had she known about threat of Hord Prime before anyone else? Finally, I do wonder about how, even as Light Spinner, she had always worn a mask. Had she been deformed even before performing the dark ritual on herself?

Sparing him without harming a hair on his head is probably one of the kindest things Shadow Weaver had ever done without any sort of manipulation or expectation on her end. And that was right after he “betrayed” her. She even had a soft tone when she realized Micah was alive. I think that she really did care for him. Although her “love” isn’t exactly one I would die for. It’s really saying something when one of her kindest moments was moments before she joined the Horde and started her chain of abuse with Catra and Adora.

Unpopular opinion: I'm sorry but I like Shadow weaber, yes I know she abused Adora and Catra but I have two reasons on why I like her. 1: I really like her design better than in the original series, 2: I love her voice better than the original voice she had. Thanks for reading :D, I hope you guys are not mad at me.

Scorpia’s family did not hand over the black garnet the horde told Scorpia this but that’s not what actually happened at 3:56 when you literally said “when the horde invaded“ there is a clip of what the horde ACTUALLY DID to get the black garnet that’s not “handing over” they lost a battle

If you feel like she redeemed herself, I get it. I feel like she was just too late. She was so abusive to Catra that her sacrifice at the end felt like the minimum amount she owed. I get her past was very twisted and that she wasn't 100% evil, but those feel more like excuses for her abusive behavior.

I dont think she sacrificed herself, I think she found a way to get rid of her problems, while still having an influence (she abused and manipulated Catra and Adora for years and the 'sacrifice' was a way for them to remember her as a hero, despite what she did) and her problems would have been the fact that she would have had to pay for her actions after the war was over

You could say that: an abuser who failed to achieve what she longed for, took out her frustration and self-loathing by tormenting literal children, and got way too much credit for doing one good thing in her life. Credit to Noelle Stevenson, though, for never actually redeeming her, and CERTAINLY not having her victims praise her postmortem.
