This is an update of a previous Shadow of the Beast comparison (Amiga & MD - • Shadow of the Beast | ... ) adding PC Engine and the unreleased SNES version.
I prefer recording my own gameplay for these comparison videos, but this is one of the only times I used videos by others. If a game is a bit too hard, and there are already good playthroughs showing pretty much everything that is to be seen, I don't see much of a point in recording new ones, at least when the gameplay is not the focus.
There's no doubt which version is the definitive: Shadow of the Beast=AMIGA. What I find fun and interesting about these type of videos is not which is better (in many cases it's personal preference), but instead how the versions look next to each other, the details. This is why I try to do full-length edits of entire longplays. IMO there's no clear winner among the three, each version does some things better than the others, but the SNES here is maybe the weakest (it's an unreleased game anyway).

    Sonic the Hedgehog almost equaled the graphics of Shadow of the Beast but the gameplay is so far ahead that Beast was left in the previous decade. Donkey Kong Country would be the next graphical advancement, but compared to Sonic, it plays more like a Rareware tech demo.

    Yeah, the truth is a lot of Amiga owners were kind of conned by the other games developers (not Psygnosis however). We saw in this game what was capable if developers designed games specifically for the power of the Amiga and then we got mostly substandard ports downgraded to also support the Atari ST's inferior graphical capabilities. Those lazy developers swizzed us Amiga owners by porting to Atari ST and Amiga in tandem.

    The Mega Drive version looks good! Better resolution, graphics and scrollings than the PC Engine and also looks better than the SNES version in many ways. Only the Amiga original looks better because it was a game tailor-made for the Amiga, using many tricks related to the hardware. But I'm pretty sure that the Mega Drive version could have looked even better if it was ported by a specific developer who know how to use most of the hardware (you know, the likes of Treasure or Zyrinx).

    Classic game I played time and again on the Amiga! The other non-Amiga renditions of this game seem "cartoony" with their high contrast artwork. Also, the non-Amiga versions soundtracks have a "whimiscal" and not the deep morbid foreboding sound of the original. The original Amiga soundtrack is something enjoyable *by itself* but the other non-Amiga versions just sound annoyingly too staccato, up-tempo, and the instruments choices are too high pitched and peppy. The original Amiga version's game has a tone and atmosphere that is a subdued alien fantasy world. Weird how the other versions changed this because its integral to the tone of Shadow of the Beast right from the opening introductory logos. You can see how perfect the graphics and soundtrack mesh together so much better on the *original* Amiga version! Original still the best!

    The Amiga is superior in all but load times. Just to add, Amiga 1000 came out '85, Genesis/Megadrive '89, SNES '91. That's SIX years difference between Amiga tech and SNES (actually 7 for UK/EU) and look/listen at the difference. Amiga was so ahead of it's time and it took PC tech until about '93 to finally better it. If Commodore had not totally squandered it's advantage we'd all have been sat using Amiga's (or equivalent) over the past two decades and not PC's. Now the other versions shown are ports to be fair to them, but SOTB wasn't just a tech demo for the Amiga, it was developed in the UK and published by Psygnosis, and typically as with many of their games on the Amiga, it looked and sounded amazing.

    The Amiga used Floppies for most of its games and that caused very slow load times. I still have my Amiga 2000HD and the Hardrive was mostly used for Applications. Yes, I was disappointed, but the games were using sector reads for a lot of games so you didn't always see the files or you couldn't read the disk with the standard OS workbench. Still to this day, I couldn't believe the Amiga couldn't survive!! Piracy was on all platforms, but I understand the response below this one about it. I still have my purchased copy of Shadow of the Beast. I think I still have the box too, not sure. My amiga still boots. lol

    A lot of nonsense and misinformations here ^^ For sure the Amiga was an impressive computer for something initially released in 1985 and it remained competitive by 1987 as the Amiga 500 but the Mega Drive, released in 1988, is superior in many ways! The Mega Drive is based on Sega System 16 arcade board (which was released in 1985) and naturally the hardware is powerful and more suited for gaming, especialy the sprites engine and also the media (cartridges > floppies) and controllers. Just look at games such as Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage 2 or Ristar, they would not be feasible on Amiga. And the SNES is also overall better than the Amiga though the SNES was released in 1990 so it starts to be less impressive by that point. btw: +Mr. C Nope, the PC Engine was released in the end of 1987, that's 4 years and a half after the NES! And that's the problem: NEC always had a foot in the past while Sega and Nintendo were always going ahead. NEC tried to keep up with an improved CD add-on in 1991 and updated system cards but that was never enough, the Mega Drive and SNES were still better and overall much less expensive by comparison! The PC Engine is a nice little system with lot of personality but it was quite a mess (still I personaly prefer it over the SNES but I prefer the Mega Drive over both).

    Visually Amiga and Mega Drive tie > SNES > PC Engine (actually it's PC Engine Super CD-Rom²). Amiga has slightly better colors than Mega Drive but Mega Drive runs the game fullscreen, without black borders. And both versions are loaded with great parallax scrollings! The SNES version looks a bit odd but has good graphics (and even very good during the inside of the castle) and retains many parallax scrollings. Lastly the PC Engine version has rather garish colors and a serious lack of parallax scrollings, especially during the indoor sections. Also it has some simplified stuff such as the fact that we don't see the outside of the castle (18:45) or the last boss whose attack pattern is now a simple boulder thrown at you (33:31). Sound wise it's rather a matter of taste. The Amiga soundtrack is brillant. The Mega Drive renditions are unique, more eerie but also more rocking depending of the tune. SNES I didn't listen. And PC Engine actually takes the music from the FM Towns version and it's a beautiful reinterpretation of the original soundtrack. None of those games are great but they're decent side scrolling action with a slice of adventure. The Amiga version was an incredible showcase at the time of its release. The sequel is probably a better game, btw. And the third game might be even better.

    The Amiga version has the best graphics overall, but I gotta give major props to the Turbografx CD version, not only does it have the best animations in the main character and the best sound (well of course, it's on CD) but you see, that system only has 1 BG layer and yet it has parallax scrolling in the overworld areas! Yeah sure, only in the overworld areas but that's at least something, and the parallax is overlapping! Very nice indeed... With some dynamic tiling they could have pulled off parallax scrolling on the inside areas too, not as detailed as the Amiga or even the Mega Drive versions, but that would certainly be better than nothing... I bet they could have done it on Super CD-ROM²...

    If by best sound you mean best sampling rate, yes, of course, it's on CD. Though the best soundtrack / music is stil the Amiga version hands down. As far as concern the animation: more frames doesn't mean better animation. In fact in this case it's exactly the opposite: the PC Engine CD has the worst animation among the four of them. The others are definitely more effective and convincing. Is like trying to animate someone's speech buy animating every single phoneme: it just doesn't work. Still a nice port anyway.

    I understand you liking the Amiga's music better, that's more of a matter of taste than anything, but I simply cannot wrap my head around you thinking the PCE animation being the "worst", that's just not right, it's like saying Astro Boy (1963) has better animation than Disney or Ghibli movies... The animation on the PC engine CD is MUCH smoother, while at the same time not making the game any less responsive than the other versions!

  • @MauroSanna

    @MauroSanna

    Well, Astroboy from 1963 was animated the Japanese way, which is gettin animation out of non animated assets (I love it, but it doesn't mean is any good). Disney and Ghibli animate in a very similar way to each other, more advanced, even if comparing the pipelines of them two. That said, the PC Engine CD animation cycles are odd, they just added useless information (AKA extra frames) to the main charactare that it did not need at all. It just wasn't thought that way. As an animator myself I think I can tell the difference between something weird and something proper; there you have it: that PC Engine one is weird. It deosn't feel right, even technically (so it's not a matter of tastes like in the music department). I have the PC Engine (actually I have it's western counterpart, the TurbographX-16 + CD) and this game is as responsive as the Amiga version, with the difference that that animation is not right. It seems it has been modified to be animated on twos rather than ones, or viceversa, just to make those extra keyframes fit the cycle (and it clearly doesn't). It would have been much better if they had rotoscoped a live action runner and used the result to animate the character: now THAT would have been good, not this one.

    I've made the comparison of Astro Boy and Disney/Ghibli movies more as a more jarring/exaggerated comparison of the 'smoothness' of the animation between the different versions of the game, the only difference between the PCE and the other versions in terms of animation other than the amount of frames is that the animation is a little slower, most likely due to the extra frames, but I don't see that as being weird, I see that as being smoother and better because that's what it is...

    @Timothy Isenhart "Runs faster" may have been a bad choice of words, but I've seen videos and read reviews claiming (and this could be a regional thing) that certain obstacles like the spikey things that jut out of the ground move much faster on the Genesis/Mega Drive. Games can run faster/slower on hardware for reasons independent of the relative strength of the hardware--things like how you code the animation frames/game logic can have an impact, and some games are known to run differently in NTSC vs PAL regions even on the same hardware. I'm not sure if Beast is a case like that or not though... just throwing this out there because it may be interesting to investigate (because I'm a dork like that).

Genesis, because it's also beautiful and scary, it's the same theme, but it's #2 because it's lower quality 3) PC Engine: sometimes it sounds as good as the Amiga version, but sometimes it sounds FUN, like beach music, so that destroys the mood 4) SNES: not sure why it's so low quality, and why they modified the music so much, maybe memory/size issues?

    Excellent Classic video games. The Amiga and Mega Drive versions are more faithful and similar, highlighting the contrast of the Mega Drive better, despite the reduced amount of color. The PC Engine version is poorer in graphics but the orchestrated CD songs make up for it. Unfortunately the version of Super Nes was less faithful in both the audio issue and the plot of the game. From the special effects, the highlight is the Mega Drive Scrolling Scenery that takes place at 7:38, followed by the unique Super 7 Mode's grid effect of 7:35, the Amiga version produces only a flash for scene cropping and Version of PC Engine has no effect. The most balanced version with great images and sounds is the Amiga version, having a technical tie between Mega Drive with better image and PC Engine with better sound. The Version of Super Nintendo left something to be desired, even for the qualities of Video Game that appeared to be superior to the others.

    The first level is definitely designed around the Amiga 1000/500 hardware to extract almost 100% performance out of the machine, as consoles did not have blitter chips, palette switchers or 4096 colours to choose from they would clearly suffer. Hell they even found a use for those very basic Amiga hardware sprites (the trees). It is the Amiga's Ridge Racer Type 4 technically.

  • @KuraIthys

    @KuraIthys

    Actually, the snes had 32,000 or so colours to work with, internal sprite and background layer control, the ability to perform graphical effects using HDMA and interrupts (including palette switches and other effects) and several other features that suggest it should have done a decent job of it. (though perhaps expecting 8 layer parallax scrolling is a bit much... But if it's too heavily optimised for the Amiga hardware specifically, it would undoubtedly be a pain to optimise it correctly for a completely different kind of hardware... The mega drive however certainly had more colour limitations, but similar kinds of hardware sprite and other features. The console versions shouldn't have suffered THAT much if you look at the raw specifications of the systems involved, unless they were terribly made... Which is quite likely of course, especially if some of these are apparently versions that weren't even publicly released (so the final efforts to improve them may never have been done...) yeah... No, even a cursory inspection of the visuals shows the snes version in particular is nowhere near the limits of what the system is capable of. It's an incredibly poor use of the hardware... Whoever was working on the graphics for that version really wasn't even trying... The genesis version could be an accurate reflection of the hardware limitations. The Amiga does definitely have a lot more RAM to work with, and likely several other advantages. I have no idea about the PC Engine version... The snes version... Is a joke that has nothing much to do with the abilities of the hardware, and really just seems to be a token effort that barely uses any capabilities the hardware has.

  • @KuraIthys

    @KuraIthys

    planet retro lmao. I've been looking into how these systems actually worked. The only reason the snes couldn't match the Amiga graphically is if the programmers involved are shit, or they couldn't afford enough cartridge space. - Never underestimate how small cartridges actually were in those days, and it was impossible (and too expensive) to use more than one. The biggest SNES games ever made only had 6 megabytes of cartridge space. The amiga, as I recall had a 720 kilobyte floppy drive. Which means the majority of those console games have to fit on the equivalent of 1-2 floppy disks at the very most, and the biggest games ever released are equivalent to maybe 6 disks... Sound is harder to say. In this case lack of RAM for the audio chip in the snes would cause problems. The Mega Drive used FM synthesis, so it would inherently sound different. The snes used samples, so there it comes down to the amount of memory available for samples. I mean, the original amigas is not THAT impressive compared to those two consoles in any objective sense. It had more ram, and generally more storage space to work with, but that's about it. It's graphical abilities were somewhat better than the mega drive, but worse than the snes (if the snes programmer knew what they were doing.) The processor in it is the same model as in the mega drive, and roughly the same speed for all intents and purposes. The snes has a really weak processor, compared to the other two, but there are ways around that. Again, a lot of it depends on whether the programmers knew what they were doing or not. I see no reason, after reading programming references and looking into how these systems actually worked why it couldn't run a near perfect copy of shadow of the beast. The mega drive wouldn't have been able to be quite that perfect a copy, but it would have been quite close. These consoles are made to an extreme budget. 7 years is a long time in technology, but budget still matters. In 1991 we had 486 PC's with some of the first SVGA graphics, and hard drives getting into hundreds of megabytes. Those are the kinds of systems that compared to the Amiga's price range when it was launched in 1985... That these very cheap consoles can even attempt to match an expensive system from 7 years ago is something in itself.

    Interesting post. I found Nintendo always always screw you on tech specs, the NES was god awful sound and graphics for the mid 80s, play Ghosts and Goblins and Commando etc on a £300 Atari ST for £20 each or get an NES for £150 and pay £50 for the same games.....which are worse and within 2 game purchases your investment was only 90 quid less lol and I don;t remember Tangerine Dream making awesome music with a Nintendo :) Same with Wii and SNES. N64 is interesting though as it has weaker raw 3D performance than PS1 in real terms but it has a lot of features to smooth out low poly models....hence the VHS blurred look of many games. Works well for Mario look but not so good for Wipeout 2097 or Ridge Racer4 on PS1. Gameboy not only was mono but the screen was unusable for arcade games as ALL moving pixels on screen instantly blurred up (so Nemesis on Gameboy was a waste of 30 quid as the bullets become invisible!!) The last Colony Wars game really did look as good as any N64 game.....via the RF lead we all used in the UK lol Many SNES carts were 24mbit or 32mbits which is 3 or 4 megabytes or the same as a typical 4 disk Amiga game, actually it is much quicker to decompress data in ROM than loading it in from disk first then decompressing it etc so more like a 5 or 6 disk Amiga game in reality. The largest I knew was 40mbit and there was a lot of 32mbit carts (found out because I wanted to buy a Wildcard for the SNES and most are 24mbit only). Of course third parties got charged a premium for cart costs (memory, battery, DSP etc) whereas for Killer Instinct and DK Country Nintendo absorbed the cost.....welcome to the mafia like cartel of cartridge gaming before Sony pwnd Nintendo with PSX business model (cheap to produce and multiple runs with little notice vs all cart costs up front and only one massive production run booked months in advance = bankruptcy for any but the largest publishers). Adding the cost of a DSP onto the cart cost even more and forget Super FX UK produced chip which no third party could afford to put in the carts. SNES for 3rd parties was a nightmare time that is over thank god. Star Wing did a good job of scuppering Jaguar sales.....Cybermorph etc did look shit for the extra money. However World Tour Racing that came much later for Jaguar CD looked more like a Saturn F1 game than anything SNES SuperFX could do, so it served its purpose and broke even I bet. Jez San should be ashamed for selling it to them but ho hum the greedy git wanted a Porsche too :) Whilst Amiga 1000 was the most advanced machine vs competitors ever sold even now it was still $3000 less than 128k Mono Mac and $4000 less than 512k EGA 8086 IBM PC at launch, it was a budget machine in USA. Later the god awful looking Amiga 500 cost about 50-60% less by late 1987 (project overran by 12 months though was meant to be 1986 launch!!). The Megadrive is a much more technically versatile machine on balance than the SNES, sure the audio is bit more metalic and with only 2 scratchy sample channels and only 64 colours but it IS as fast as an Amiga 500 or faster for any type of game engine. The SNES could never do Lotus Turbo Challenge II at the speeds an NTSC 1985 Amiga 1000 could do. The problem is the SNES does 256 colour platform games nicely, everything else interesting including the launch title Pilot Wings NEEDs a DSP just to use the custom chips inside fast enough. You are right the CPU is too week Let's be honest 3 years is a generation in the past. TRS80/VIC20/ZX81 to C64, C64 to Amiga 1000 and then from MD/SNES to Saturn/3DO/PS1 etc. The SNES had a horrible 8bit CPU (with 16bit internal calculations) loosely based on the Atari 400/800 CPU and if the SNES is 16bit the Mac 128k and Amiga 1000 is 32bit. Actually the same CPU as the Apple II GS For sure though Shadow of the Beast 1 was a game engine designed around the original 1985 Amiga custom chip/7mhz 68000 CPU combo and so no other version will ever be better just like Mario Kart is designed around the SNES hardware and Street Racer on Megadrive/Amiga looks worse. For Beast 1 even the useless hardware sprites (inferior in all but resolution to the C64) are given a full workout in the Amiga version to make the massive trees and many palette swaps by scan line occurs without penalty. The Amiga sound hardware on paper is inferior to the SNES Sony soundchip but the SNES soundchip is in a compromised bus design so it's not just sound or cost of cartridge ROM size, feeding the SNES sample channels willynilly like an Amiga 1000 does with zero effort and impact to CPU speed (because the RAM is clock doubled at 14mhz like Centrino CPU in Intel laptops from this centuryl) so there is never ever a bottle neck of Paula accessing RAM under DMA vs CPU wanting to access the same RAM. The SNES is designed to play back Windows 3/95 style general midi style music files and is not intended to be used to only play unique ever changing samples all the time on all channels. The chip itself can but this is how it is implemented int the SNES motherboard.. Basically the SNES is designed to do 256 colours in specific parts of the screen platform style games, everything else requires a DSP to do mid 80s arcade games like Out Run or Salamander. The Megadrive has a very metalic sound chip and less colours but that aside it is a vastly more versatile machine. Megadrive Gauntlet IV even has some awesome music despite that sound chip. And don't forget Commodore made nothing from Amiga game sales, Nintendo were running a cartel and making more money than the Mafia world wide from ALL game royalties!! I guess Nintendo looked at which NES games were bringing in the the billions and created a machine to do nicer looking/sounding versions of those games I guess. Jay Miner and others designed the Amiga 1000 to control the electron beam gun on your television and the vibrations of the speaker cone in the most sophisticated way possible. Apart from the sound, which is down to personal taste seeing as it had the same sound chip as many arcade machines of the late 80s, the Megadrive is probably better than an Amiga. The Mega CD definitely is because Batman driving levels on Amiga and Mega CD look a generation apart and the music can be streamed from the CD. However as an example Super Stardust on floppy disk for Amiga 1200/4000 sounds better than anything on SNES/Megadrive ever could (and it even has 6 channel sound...2 of which are created in software....and a game that you needed a £1500 Pentium 133mhz PC to run it at as well as a £299 Amiga 1200...I know because I had both of those machines at the time....of course I only bought the Amiga version and pirated the PC version booo hiss!!! lol) In the UK though the SNES sold only 1 million units vs 2 million Megadrives, which is why for me and my school friends Mario/Zelda is what the odd kids were playing, the rest of us were playing nice arcade conversions like Golden Axe, Out Run and Afterburner at last instead of crappy Activision/US Gold Amiga conversions lol of course when the Street Fighter bundle came out we all got a SNES....so it is Starwing and SF2 that helped them to even get to 1 million in the UK. Japan and USA retro is just totally different for us in the UK.......now if we could just erase the ZX Rectum games from the history books.............lol
