Shading a Portrait with only ONE PENCIL [in-depth tutorial]
Want to up your portrait game? This video goes in depth on techniques and tips for shading portraits realistically, using only one standard school pencil (Ticonderoga) to achieve a wide range of values. I am also using a Tombow Mono Zero eraser, in addition to a standard pink eraser.

Dear Jescia, I am a lady of 63 years and because of the situation at the moment, I am at home 13 months now. In May 2020 I started drawing. With your help and your vlogs I learned how to draw noses , eyes and mouths. In this vlog here you taught me how to blend. I did the tutorial with you. Yesterday I made a portrait of Anne Hathaway. I wanted to see, if I could manage that now on my own, with all the knowledge you gave me. And it is really a good portrait. It wouldn't be so without your help. Very, very many thanks for your teaching and your vlogs. I appreciate your work soooo much. Greetings from Austria Ulli P.S.: I love your voice. And thank you, that you speak slowly. My mother tongue is German and I can easily follow.

Great video. So informative. I keep coming back to it as I do more drawing and learn heaps every time. Thank you so much.
i love the locked in portrait
I really got a lot out of this video. I began watercolor painting as a pandemic hobby but want to learn sketching, too. And since I’m 80 now, I need to learn efficiently and practice every day. Thank you so much!
Jessica you teach in such a delightful way..I also started at 64 got a lot to learn but my shading was usually to dark but when you said shade fron dark to light it was an eye opener. I can sit and watch you all night. Such an amazing job you don with this portrait. And your voice is so soothing . Love your work. Thank you so much. Best wishes.
I am your very big fan . Because of you I started drawing . You were always my inspiration . Thank you .
This was highly and thoroughly instructive, showing what an artist sees, and thinks about while looking at a source photo, and while bringing a drawing to life. Using a single pencil for one long, continuous effort also keeps learners in a constant focus on technique and watching the project develop as a whole. When a teacher says something like, "I'm now going to switch to my 6B," it somehow interrupts the rhythm for me, and the spell is broken-- I'm staring at the pencil instead of the process of drawing. Thank you so much for this.
You are one of my new favorite artists, thank you for being so good.
You are a lovely teacher, I appreciate you.
Fabulous work with just one lovely pencil...Your model is so pretty.
Thanks for helping us learn drawing portrait.
what a beautiful man and what an even prettier drawing! thank you
excellent tutorial, i am a newbie to drawing at the age of 63, i am starting to get the shading right (phew) but still struggling with hair, but studying your tutorial and playing back a few times I can already see I am improving! Thank you Jessica !
Beautiful. You're such a good teacher ☺️.
Very amazing drawing!! Your drawing skills are talented.👍👍👍
I just found you and followed along , your tutorial was very helpful , thank you so much 😊
Gorgeous, Jesica! Thank you so much...
Great tutorial! I like to find videos like this to show my students when they get tired of hearing my voice. I use the Ticonderoga Beginner pencils myself and with my M.S. students. They have a much softer lead and can give a deeper dark,
I really appreciate how you show people of limited financial means that they can still progress. It makes me wonder if you were once poor and have a heart to show them a way forward. Plus, I tried a yellow HB Papermate for shading today and found it to be better than the 2B I had been using. Thanks so much! I'm currently trying to get better at eyes nose and lips.

I grew up in a small, rural town and did not have access to fancy art supplies until I got to college (online ordering wasn't really a thing yet either - I still had dial-up internet). I get a lot of comments from people asking what supplies I am using, and honestly, it doesn't really matter much. You can make beautiful things with limited means if you know how to use it!

thanks sister… and lol the sketch was better than the reference the shades ,shadows and all …❤️
Nice sketch
Really impressive, what pencil grade did you use?
Welcome Jessica.
super
Jessica, what kind of paper do you use? Smooth? Vellum?
Wow …😊
Can you please show in this masterclasses how you have drawn the sketch. It looks like directly copied with transparent paper from the photo....? I would think shadowing and contour drawing should be a unique process.

What do you think of Devon Rodriguez drawings? They are very nice detailed Studio drawings but he does them in a moving subway in a few minutes without the person noticing
nice
Okay. Guess I am in love with you now.
I can’t maintain looking back and port in the picture that’s the problem with me and also the hair can’t do it
Çenesinde farklılık var .ama süper olmuş 👍👍👍👍👏
My main issue with the mechanical pencil is that it's always too sharp. Because I mostly work with ink my pencil tends to last quite a while barely ever sharpen it

Your drawing would photograph much better if you used an art pencil. Somethings make it worth going to art school, makes you look less of an amateur.
