18世紀初頭ごろから生産が活発化し、300年以上の伝統を有している。鬼瓦の製作者は「鬼師」または「鬼板師」と呼ばれ、伝統的な鬼面や家紋入りの鬼瓦のほか、室内用の小さい鬼瓦などのインテリア商品やエクステリア製品など多岐にわたっている。
Sanshu Onigawara traditional crafts have a history of over 300 years and flourished at the beginning of the 18th century. People who make Onigawara Crafts are known as onishi or oniitashi. In addition to the traditional types with gargoyles and family crests, the Onigawara craft extends to other products including small ornaments for interior design and outdoor decorations.

Love the note about how he finds the sculptures drifting into self portraits- kinda feels like he himself extends his own protection over the houses they sit on.
