Japan traditional crafts Aoyama Square

The sanshin is an instrument manufactured in Naha, Okinawa and other parts of Japan’s southernmost islands. It was brought to the Ryukyu Kingdom (modern-day Okinawa) in its original form from China and became an instrument used in the imperial court. Eventually it became popular amongst the common people, and today it is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage indispensable in traditional Japanese dance, Ryukyu opera, and folk/pop musical arrangements.

Always interesting to me how traditional japanese craftsmen tend to work very close to the floor and use their feet in ways that you don't see elsewhere in traditional crafts.

It might be that we have a custom to sit on the floor.

I believe the harvest of snake skins comes from other places either in country or out but, as you can tell in this custom crafting of instruments every piece is used and absolutely nothing is wasted. It produces such a unique and distinct sound. Beautiful video, awesome editing, love learning from them. 🙂

But why snake skin? I don't think there are snakes this big in China so the originals must have been made using something else
