Honestly, it’s important to not let one aspect of your life consume your life. We’re told all the time to not let a relationship absorb us, but it’s rarely talked about in reference to careers. It’s unhealthy to work all the time. You need regular sleep. You need a balanced diet. You need a stable routine to feel happy and satisfied with anything. To improve, work on it a little bit everyday, but make time for other things to keep a balanced life.

I attempted sketchbook summer this year and failed miserably. I totally see that my problem was my want to draw pretty things and not letting myself draw bad shit. I need to let go of that.

I've had stopped drawing for myself for 2 years because I got into graphic design but now, I don't give af, I'm doing character design. I'm a bit out of practice but thats okay, the fundementals are there. Thanks for this video :)

This is kinda a different topic but sort of similar thing I'm going through right now that was discussed in the video: so long story short, I'm also trying to have a healthier mindset about art these days. I just recently got rejected from the summer program at CalArts for high school artists and I keep comparing myself to them on Instagram and it made me feel like my art was trash. So far, I talked with my cousin for advice and met some people online who were also rejected, and it made me realize that comparing myself to others is a terrible idea. I'm sort of on an on/off hiatus right now to get my mind settled and cleared, and just draw when I feel like it. However I still feel guilty for not drawing for a whole day because I feel I lose precious practice time. So basically, I'm in the process of learning how to not give a fucc.

Sometimes when I don't draw for a few days, I find I have better focus and can draw for longer and at a higher quality because that creative energy has built up a bit over the days. Sometimes drawing everyday for a while works better, but you might burn yourself out if you're stressing about drawing every single day, do what suits you, many many artists just take more time to draw, less frequently, even if it's just once a week, three times a week etc, drawing everyday can be a good habit but it doesn't have to be a one size fits all. Maybe do a small doodle everyday if you can't fit in anymore time and feel the need to do something everyday artistically? Good luck guys, your commitment is really admirable, I hope things go well for you guys and you see the improvements you want regarding your art and in your lives

tbh i never understood using your sketchbook as someplace for refined art, but maybe its because im primarily a digital artist? IDK most of my sketch book is usually thumbnails, and then i might draw a bigger sketch of the thumbnails i scan to do digitally. or its some bored studies from class. I still need to draw more in my sketchbook because i do kinda stick to the wanting todo more finished stuff but its never been an issue for me to draw something not great in my sketchbook because its a? sketch? so yeah I agree with all you say and also ps. love your art style

I always try to make my own “private” sketchbook but ppl always ask to see it and when i tell them no then they get annoyed. Any tips?

just tell them no and if they get annoyed its their problem. or just say you havent drawn anything in it yet/dont draw in that sketchbook and its for like writing notes or something. also try to avoid having it around people in public so they won't have the chance to ask

If you really want your sketch book to be private then just ignore those people and don’t show it to them. If they’re annoyed thats them and their problem.

"Advice on art block" Me: oh my god yes please, tell me im all ears.

I stumbled upon this in my suggestion feed and I expected a by the book sketchbook tour, But what I got was completely different and a eye opening experience. For the last two years I've been in a state to where I'd been more focused on my art and coding skills more than anything else ignoring all my friendships and hardly taking care of myself, I'm overweight for a gal whos 6'0 and I hate looking at myself and feel terrible in my own body, But this video was the final fucking push I needed to stop being a bitch and change something in my life, I've already started eating healthier but I am going to force myself to work out because I know in order to look how I want I'm going to have to work for it, Thank you for this and I look forward to seeing the content you produce in the future.
