    We just re-ran the test with 13.2 volts and the amp outputs 64 watts. We also re-ran the test at 16 volts and the amp output was 98 watts. The amp went into protect after 2 minutes of testing at 16 volts. As part of next weeks VLOG we will show the results. The spreadsheet has been updated on a separate tab with the new results.

    So it gained 34 watts with only 2.8 volts added in? Wow! That's pretty nice wouldn't everyone agree? Imagine if it was 1000 watt amp..... Doesn't this sound a like a little shitting around to anyone else?

    I think, or at least hope, it's better, because LTT runs on entertainment value that they usually derive from a sense of humour, but often from incompetence and random failure, and the rest of it is, how do i put it nicely, maintaining healthy press relationship with the major manufacturers - i have seen much worse cases, so i don't want to be too critical, and having worked in the tech press myself, i know it's almost unavoidable, which is why i quit, but still. LTT is not a very good source of actual knowledge.

    Oh that was almost 2 decades ago now that i used to be a tech journalist. I have since worked as an engineer in electronics industry for a decade, then dropped that and went studying linguistics and working in high performance computing research. If the world gets consumed by a massive evil AI running on a cluster of Xeon Phi and NVidia Tesla one day, that's likely partially my fault now. But at least i can be honest now, right? Also i may have left some bugs in automotive firmware and medical devices in my prior career - none major that i specifically know of and not on purpose of course, but that's how it is.

    1n 2005 I assembled and installed a showcase sound system in my car for our high-end car stereo shop. Eclipse AVN and JL Audio equipment was installed and to this day the equipment still performs flawlessly and has never been abused or removed/replaced. Sure, the head unit lacks features, the CD Changer is a bit antiquated, and the navigation system can no longer be updated. But, all features work including the iPod interface. If you buy good equipment and install it correctly you'll more than get the initial investment back in longevity. This video was great and used testing I have never seen in real time. Remember, if your new amplifier comes with a data page and the ratings are at 14.4 volts DC you won't get the advertised power. Car electrical systems run around 12 volts in the real world when you're driving.

    How about doing this same examination on a $1000 subwoofer and see if they also as truthful? Obviously its going to be better, but you can verify the amplifier power, the subwoofers output and power handling and the box design and materials. You'd be surprised to learn they also fudge the numbers. Please do this also.

    naturalbornkillr check sundown audio subs, they fudge their numbers on a good way, the sundown x12 (550$) is rated at 1500w rms however most people recommend running 2000w with some people running up to 2500w with no coil heating. they're amps also perform slightly better than what they're rated on dyno's. however there amps are fairly expensive. the 2000w amo cost like 700$

    I have to say I am very impressed. I asked people that create complex subwoofer enclosures such as 6th order to please graph the frequency response in and out of a vehicle and got cussed out for being curious and inquisitive. It's my opinion that if you can't or won't objectively test a unknown design why would people tout it as the best design? These people must be pandering to a youtube dumbed down crowd. Your testing of the subwoofer went above and beyond. keep the videos coming!

    Correction: at 08:00, +10dB is a factor of 10 in power, not 3. The Amp Power test seems a little unfair at 12V, most of the time the amp is receiving round about 14V and most amps are specified at 14.4V. But i'm sure it won't produce 100W rms at 14.4 either. Still a very good, semi professional review.

    There's many sales trick out there,like they wondered why I wanted to do the electrical trade & I have been unemployed for almost 6 years,one of the modules that I did was amplifier principles which was a post trade industrial electronics strand of that course at tech - yeah !!! Why did anyone think that I didn't want to do that ???? Such as,I didn't get sucked in by the marketing tactics of watts PMPO (peak music power output) which means that is its power output assuming that the output signal is DC (direct current). AC (alternating current) is usually the output signal which is less than the DC component, the only speakers which come close to consuming DC is the subwoofers as the higher frequencies are filtered out by a Lowpass filter so they only operate at a few hertz (almost DC). The things to look for is both magnet size & impedance which is the AC equivalent of resistance ,which is actually the impedance at DC level. Meaning ,a stereo rated to run 100 watt speakers which have an 8 ohm coil impedance can technically run 50 watt speakers which have an impedance of 4 ohms. My dad used to have a Pioneer stereo which you could turn the volume up full blast on but the speakers will not distort,I think it was because it had a MOSFET (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor) amplifier in it whereas the older stereos would clip or distort because they had a silicone or germanium transistor amplifier in them which their bias is more current dependent. MOSFET amplifiers rely more on voltage for their bias.

    7:58 +10dB is 10 times more power and not 3 like you mentioned in the video. Their power rating of 300W is probably PMPO which is a dubious type of rating anyway. My guess would be 30W RMS (120W peak) at best

    In the mid nineties' worked for Radio Shack while I was in college. They were bad about overstating the specs on their car speakers, amps, and power converters. You had to read the very small print. The box an average speaker would be in, would say it could handle 2500 watts (some times more depending on model) but the fine print would say 2500 watts peak for 2mins, the speakers could really only handle about 30watts constantly. Same with their amps and power converters, always stating in big bold letters and numbers the peak power, and small print for continues power.

    You know, if auto manufacturers used marketing "tricks" to pad the output horsepower claims of their vehicles, or computer manufacturers did something similar to their advertised specs, there would be lawsuits of false advertising etc. If we lie or misrepresent a product we offer as part of a financial transaction, we risk being charged with fraud. How is it audio product manufacturers seem to be exempt or immune to these penalties? In the video, they address the 100W/300W ratings, and suggest it's an arbitrary claim that the peak response may "sound" like 300W. Well first of all, wattage ratings don't have any particular sound level, it is input power only, second, speakers don't output the watts they receive. Third, there was no explanation about the 100WRMS rating. Fourth, when they are specifying power, that's what they should actually mean! I saw a few soundbars out on display with suspect wattage ratings and I decided to check the rear... because being self-powered they were required to state their maximum power consumption. I was bewildered... They were all corrupt, but one I remember in particular was rated at 160W, but the power consumption was rated at 35W... What the actual fuck! And all those mini home theatre systems in a box, with an amp/receiver about 1.5 inches thick and no fan or heat sink. Same deal... 800W... but only 75W or so power consumption. This is utter bullshit and it needs to stop. Consumers are being lied to, ripped off and nobody in a regulatory position is doing squat about it.

    One of the most important parameters is harmonic distortion versus output for a given frequency. The ported design gives a high system Q and a steep falloff of 24 db per octave below system resonance. True low distortion woofer enclosure amplifier arrangements even for high end audiophile equipment is still rare. The optimal design is the acoustic suspension design. Newton's second law of motion applied to forced oscillation explains why by examining the equation for the approximate result. This is given in every textbook of first year physics for engineering and science students.

    The one test that you performed that I don’t believe is absolutely reliable was the packing peanuts. I’ve never had much luck with that method because the packing peanuts can lay against each other different each time they’re poured in. But if it’s working for you great. Now I use an IMSG & for a volume of a vented enclosure I’d block off the vent from the outside. This gives you the ability to accurately calculate the final enclosure volume including driver displacement. You can also find the tuning frequency of a vented enclosure and plot impedance rise. Overall good job. It’s just unfortunate that consumers will learn more from your video than people in the industry. Because so many already know everything. Just ask them & they’ll tell you!

BUT 50-60 WATTS IS NOT EVEN NEAR A 100 WATTS. . . . as a DJ, producer, audiophile and just all arround audio fanatic it pisses me off that you can not trust these companies. . .

    I have that same el-cheapo 12" Dual... I blew the port right out of the box after about a year, half-blew the driver within hours afterward. It worked awesomely in a single-cab pickup (I've aged past the days where I need my windows to rattle), but once I put it in the trunk of my Camry its deficiencies were obvious - I cranked it waaay too much just to hear it, and that's when the port and driver gave up. However, I did get what I paid for it, and it wasn't too bad considering it was $100.

NOT even remotely the same product, buddy.

    Nice work! About the only thing I might suggest for this type of tear-down is to grab a calibrated mic and some software (such as Room Eq Wizard (free)) and do some frequency sweeps rather than increments of 10dB. You can do one sweep from ~20-100Hz in front of the driver, then stick the mic in the port and do another sweep. That'll tell you exactly what the tuning frequency is.

    Hows come you only run a single sine wave at 10Hz intervals rather than a full sweep? Kinda like doing an engine dyno at 1,000 RPM intervals instead of a full pull IMO. A lot of valuable info can lie in between the test nodes.

    the lack of power of the amplifier, doesnt really mean its under powered. i just means that the higher notes are limited to what it can do with the lower notes. i bet that 50 rms is enough for it to get to xmax at 25 hz. so instead of letting it get power to get xmax at 50hz, and have it bottom out at 40hz, and get all destroyed, they let it be a wider range albeit subdued. that i my impression when i saw the incar out put at 30 hz right up there with the 100hz

    Yeah they sell these things on "Peak" power, but its the RMS that matters in overall output. The sub itself looks like its decent quality though. So maybe one could get an external amplifier, and use the volume calculations and spend the extra $5 on a better tuned port, if it would actually be good?

    Easy and quick way to "check" the truth about power on car amp (Most other amps to) Is to check the fuse if it is lets say 15 amp fuse, on 12V system, and they claim 300 - 400W you know it is impossible coz 15A X 12V = 180W So if the amp in a peek draw more than 180W the fuse gona blow ;) But when driving, many cars have 14,2 V But still 15A X 14,2V = 213W (P(W) = I(A) × V(V)) That means that the nominell effekt probably is closer top 80W and no way it can draw 300-400W And do remember some of the power it takes through the fuse also goes to heat and resistances. Not all energy goes to the woofer. Now ofc this is not 100% accurate, It also depend on the voltage to the woofer. But converting will also "steel" power sry for my bad english

    Measuring the volume with plastic Airsoft BBs would be better than packing peanuts, because the plastic BBs are uniformly-sized and non-compressible. Sand would be even better because the grains are smaller and can pack more tightly, but I can understand not wanting to deal with the mess.

    I don't really see the "issue" with the "bumped output." That's called an acoustic impedance modification and is standard practice when designing sub-woofer enclosures. In professional sound reinforcement, they have "huge bumps" in their simulated response, often 20dB or greater above the characteristic sensitivity of the "naked" driver. This is accomplished with sophisticated labyrinths of folded up bass horns. The resulting "simulated" output would not look pretty on paper, but that doesn't matter because linear distortion from the room is just as bad or worse anyway, and can be corrected with EQ/processing, so who cares? The important thing is maximum acoustic displacement with acceptably low nonlinear (harmonic etc) distortion while minimizing amplification requirements. These horn sub designs have multiple impedance peaks, which is desirable as that further improves overall system efficiency, reducing amplifier heating. The engineers who designed this cheapo little "dual" sub took advantage of a cheap/easy acoustic impedance "trick" involving a driver with a weak motor and a ported enclosure. The in-car response shows that their "trick" combined with whatever EQ may be developed into the amp, work fine and deliver a very reasonably flat in-car response. (+/-6dB is outstanding for low frequency response). The location of the impedance "peak" created by the venting may well all play into the design in a more sophisticated manner than one may think on first impression.. That impedance "peak" may well be playing an intended role in reducing amplifier load through the most heavily used frequency ranges. As for the amp.. the 100W claims may be a bit optimistic, or... there may be another "trick" going on here. 20 years ago a similarly "cheap" system would have likely barely have managed 10W before significant distortion. In a way, we should be thankful for such a cheap device actually delivering power in the ballpark of claims (within about 2dB). I think it would be interesting to see what the amp would do when connected to 2ohm and 8 ohm dummy loads. I suspect the "100W" rating would come close to true at "normal" voltage input ranges with a 2 ohm load. There's no "requirement" that the amplifiers rating/claimed output be into a load that matches that of the driver it is paired with in such a system, so this "claim" may not be entirely bogus, just highly misleading. Not saying this "dual" sub is good or bad, (I do not care, and I'm not here to defend it), just pointing out that the approach to evaluating it here may be based in some false pretenses.

  • @jesselaine1574
    @jesselaine15747 жыл бұрын

    So.. if im not mistaken dB works as an logarithmic scale, for every 10db the sound level goes up tenfold, so dosnt that mean to get that 10db bump you need to add 10x power to the sub. Makes you wonder when they make such an huge mistake what else is wrong.

  • @ML_314
    @ML_3146 жыл бұрын

    And to be correct with everything: An extra of 10dB means 10x the power according to physics: P = 10 ^ (L / 10) And in the other direction: L = 10 * LOG10(P) Or easier: Every +3dB means double the power. 0dB - 1W +3dB - 2W +6dB - 4W +9dB - 8W ...and so on

    Great vid - Subscribed!! I do have a question about your method though... When installed in a vehicle, and hooked to the electrical system, the amp is getting more than 12v from the alternator, and I noticed a lot of voltage drop from the stand alone battery. That being said, I think it might have eeked another 5w, if that, but it would have been fairer. Either way Im excited to see how you boost this amp for the cheap!!!
