    This episode gave a lot of food for thought. It hints at a lot of things it does not fully explain and yet explains many things. I like what I've seen so far.

    This TV show is soooo good that it belongs to the same breath as The Band of Brothers.

    Read Shogun almost 50 yrs ago, didn't come to realize it was absolutely based on an truly extraordinary real man, till decades later! His intelligence and adaptability changed Japan like few other foreigners! (Wikipedia, covers much of his life, and choices!)

    Yes, as fascinating as Toranaga is, the real Tokugawa Ieyasu was even more impressive! He's one of Japan's "3 Great Unifiers" along with Oda Nubanaga & Hideyoshi, who is the Taiko on Shōgun. I covered most of his early life leading up to where events begin in Shōgun here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nnuip8-leLKqkZc.htmlsi=mYfVmat18Ev8ea12

    Another man he reminds me of is Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander, based on the real life Thomas Cochraine. Also a guy who had some of the biggest balls in the universe.

    I rank this episode as the best so far. The pacing was fine and it really developed the emotional characters of Blackthorn and Mariko. The surprise ending just goes to show how Toronago's son was easily manipulated. There was no honor in the ambush and butchering of the defenseless warriors. Yabu and Mariko were the only adults in the room and realized the cowardly act went against Toronaga's wishes. His son even repeated his advice, "Don't make the first move," and "Let your enemies make the mistakes." Now, the only question is how Toranaga hears of this incident, and I bet Yabushige will be obligated to report this to him asap, along with Mariko and the courtesan spy, Kiku. Let's hope they uncover Omi's part in this scheme.

    Good vid. So now Toranaga only has edo and yabus men to take on all 4 regents armies? Does he have any other allies to help besides yabu?

  • @JeremyIceAndFire33

    @JeremyIceAndFire33

    Yes, he does have some other allies throughout the country. One of the main reasons the other 4 daiymos turned against him was because how powerful he was becoming as Toranaga continued to expand his territory. He's got some other friends out there we'll see in future episodes.

    They have a line where they say local lords like Yabu are a dime a dozen. Or I think the Spaniard put it “they would fight just for the chance to wipe his ass”. I think that’s selling Yabu a little short and think he has a bit more strength, but I think guys like him can summon hundreds to thousands of men and each of the regents is more like 10s of thousands.

    In history, the Tokugawa army "Toranaga" fought at Sekigahara with about 25 daimyo and 80,000 samurai on his side. from japan🇯🇵

    Ok... question, I don't think Blackthorne would write his log in Portuguese, it would most likely be in Dutch or lesser chance English, how then is Mariko able to translate it?

  • @JeremyIceAndFire33

    @JeremyIceAndFire33

    I wondered that too. You'd think Portuguese would be the last thing he'd write in, not being his native language & all. Your guess is as good as mine, maybe a simplification for the show perhaps.

    Omi came up with an excellent solution to save his uncle Yabushige, which is why he was smiling. Watch the scene (37:25 - 37:41) and the scene (41:44 - 43:11) between Omi and Nagakado.

    I dont believe that was his real goal, short term he saved his uncle yes, but he ultimately wants his uncle out of the way so he can become Lord. Especially since Kukio started whispering sweet nothings in his ear about wishing he was Lord of Izu. That smile was him being happy his manipulation is working.

    Why do you feel you have to and what qualifies you to explain the plot? I'm an intelligent person, who read the book in 1976, and understood the plot easily.

    @@smilingknight8603yea this is an odd take, especially when you look at the comments on a lot of Jeremy’s other Shogun videos where quite a few ppl were having trouble understanding a few things until seeing his videos.

    In history, the largest earthquake occurred during the war between Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. If there had been no earthquake, the Tokugawa army would definitely have been destroyed. from japan🇯🇵
