the light donkey kick changes means now the knockdown after landing it is +42, which gives ryu an automatic safe jump in the corner. should make him more threatening in the corner. great vid btw

Worth noting the LVL 1 super change means Ryu can easily react to his EX fireball blowing through an opponent's non-EX and confirm it into super from pretty much anywhere on the screen.

Ryu got majorly buffed this patch. Very happy to see. Keeping denjin when using fireballs is very important imo.

I think it's also worth mentioning the universal change that pressing HP + HK during the cancel window won't cause a TC to come out. It's a great qol change, since cancelling 5HP too late into DI would previously cause you to eat a punish counter since the TC has a longer cancel window, and even a 1HP+HK input would come out as the TC.

These changes sound really nice, not only to make Ryu stronger but also just to make him more fun to play. Even if he gets outclassed by Akuma and other shotos his options no longer feel disappointing (which was my main issue with him on release), specially with how denjin charge works now.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Ryu actually was the best shoto rn because unlike Ken and Luke he actually gets meterless strike throw from light chains. The pushback buffs to his LPs means he's close enough to walk meaty throw after canceling into L.Tatsu while Ken and Luke need to DR to get meaty throw. That combined with routing buffs that put his average damage on par or better than the others, Ryu is looking extremely threatening.

I've never understood why they gave him two target combo that doesn't really do much and a buff special he has to use in neutral. My only wish from the patch was to have TC lead to a free charge and they not only gave me that, they buffed Ryu a whole lot. This is amazing to look at.

They buffed him all around but it seems like they want his fireball game to be his standout feature. With the denjin and hitstun changes, there's a lot of ranges where you can do light fireball > EX denjin fireball > EX fireball > SA1. If you land on a fireball and Ryu has denjin + drive, he actually has tons of options. Even spaced light fireball > EX denjin fireball > drive rush gives him some pretty silly conversions for a normal projectile

Shinku being 7 frames also hugely buffs Ryu's routing into it. You used to have to use Light Hashogeki in juggles to make it work, but now it works just find from your Medium Hashogeki juggles that go into Heavy Shoryuken.

all the buffs are nice but being able to hold denjin charge is a change that makes ryu feel more complete and fun. even if he ends up being overtuned and eventually nerfed, i'll be happy to keep on playing this version of ryu

If you see the OD fireball trade with a regular fireball midscreen, from the delay against the opponent's regular fireball, as well as the delay from them getting hit from the punish counter, you can usually win the fireball war, AND react with an SA1 to combo. That was the first use i thought of for the OD Hadoken/SA 1 change

I get the change to Denjin moves now being heavy only, but I think it would've been nice to keep it for all strengths so you can apply it to any speed of the projectiles. Instead of locking it to heavy I would've made it so that tapping the button uses the normal version, and holding applies the Denjin effect.

The stHP advantage buff makes it so it combos into h.hashogeki in punish counter or DR, which I feel is a significant buff since it's the easier of his HPs to land while being the only one that couldn't combo into h.hashogeki previously.

Crouching medium punch is now +2 on block if you meaty it from either target combo into Denjin. You can frame trap a regular Denjin hasho cancel from the crouching medium it’ll trade with a light reversal and you’re +28 for a full combo of your choice. If they block the Denjin hasho you’re +3 point blank for another strike throw mix.

One thing I find kinda disappointing is that they didn't apply the denjin changes to Ryu's supers. They could have made level 1 and level 2 only use your denjin if you input it with HP so we have more control over Denjin usage.

I was thinking about that. In modern you can only do the supers with either the shortcut (no version control) or with medium for lv 2 or heavy for level 3, also no version control.

@Bafael I've found a weird interaction and don't know why it doesn't connect, after drive rush 6HK on punish counter it leaves at +10 , 5HP will combo but not 4HK, both are 10 frames with the same begining frame data (9 frames of startup with 5 actives frames hitbox from 10th frame trough 14th) can you confirm me i'm not crazy baf ? tested on Guile both standing and crouching. Edit : apparently it only works on corner, must be hitboxes collisions whiffing
