Seymour Duncan VS Stock Jackson Pickups

Got my Jackson JS32T Rhoads 2 and a half months ago. Now i finally got around to getting the pickups replaced. I put a Seymour Duncan Distortion in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck. I also got all of the electronics replaced. New CTS pots, new Switchcraft toggle switch. Hope you enjoy.
Take a look at my other sites.
And you can also get yourself a copy of my first album on my website. Only 5.50$

It doesn't cost that much to produce good pickups. Duncans/Gibson/EMG charge a lot for brand name, not for quality. Iron Gear pick ups are at the same class as Seymour Duncan, and they cost around 30 GBP each. In states you can get nice sounding GFS pickups pretty cheap too. There also are cheap Entwistle pickups, that start at about 20$ a piece, but I'd rate them below IG/Duncans.

Had the Rhoads Made in India, I was impressed, got stolen so I got a KEXMG, after a while I went for a local shop and found the newish version which is made in China and I was so lucky to grab the last piece which is the JS32T Warrior, so impressed with the neck feel, the guitar sounds phenomenal, everything about it is so good, only minor flaws are a lil' blemish very small spot at the back and some on other areas but not visible unless you own it lol, that's so wonderful guitar for the price, all strings are perfectly intonated and they play insanely flat and resonant to each other, that's a real guitar, won't recommend any other guitar, I mean this is a real guitar, it plays like a pro and sounds like a pro too, I have EMG's and Seymour Duncans on other guitars and I really hear those stock pickups almost on par BUT they require a lil' bit more drive (they have lower output) the articulation is amazing, the accuracy is a bit lower but it gives it a unique good sound, not sloppy at all! Wish I get other JS32T as a backup, I wouldn't get the Temolo version, they offer more possible build errors etc.

I believe that I got the same pickups in my JS22 Dinky. I really liked them, but I succumbed to Alnico snobbery and bought and installed a set of Alnico-driven high-output humbuckers. These are wound to nearly the same DC resistance as the stock Jacksons, but I was fortunate to find a set driven by Alnico 2 magnets as opposed to the Alnico 5s I was expecting. The feel of the guitar hasn't changed much, if at all, but the tone has that Alnico "chirp" I got addicted to when I bought my first axe with PAF-inspired pickups. I'm really glad I made the change!

For those out there who cannot hear a real difference... the stock Jackson pickups are good but you will hear their weaknesses at full stage volume and even bedroom volumes depending on your equipment. I was originally hesitant to replace my stock Jackson Bridge pickup but eventually put in a Duncan JB and it made almost no difference, actually the JB sounded more brittle and sterile compared to the Jackson. On the other hand, I took out the JB and replaced it with a Duncan Distortion and now the guitar is a whole new animal and grew a set of balls very very quickly. This is a good comparison video but it doesn't really do it full Justice. In real life the real difference between these two pickups is that the Duncan Distortion that has more clarity and note to note definition, way tighter on the low end and definitely less harsh or shrill on the top end. More compressed and warmer... harmonic's will simply jump off of your fretboard with the Duncan Distortion while the Jackson pickup seemed to lack harmonic content. What's even better with the Duncan Distortion is that if you lower the pickup height a bit away from the strings, you will lose a little bit of output but will gain even more clarity I will lose some of that top-end fizz that some people may not like... run it through a tube screamer and you will get that awesome Midtone hump like a Duncan JB while maintaining a tight low-end from The Duncan distortion. So all in all my Jackson dinky went from "awesome" to... "holy shit awesome".. Duncan distortions all the way.

Aftermarket pickups are usually an unnecessary expense - but we love to buy ourselves new stuff, right! The difference is subtle but it is definitely there. I feel like the Jackson "high out put" pickups are modelled after the Super Distortion due to it's popularity, hence why this might be such a subtle difference. part of that is indeed correct concerning Randy's actual guitar... Randy's original white Concord that was built by Grover Jackson did indeed have a Duncan Distortion in the bridge... The second guitar that Grover Jackson built for him... The black one... had a JB and 59 in it but there is no known recordings of him using a guitar. When Randy used his white Concorde live, he only used it for the songs that were in Eb tuning... Flying High Again, believer and over the mountain... first two songs can be heard with him playing his white Concord Jackson with Duncan distortions on the tribute album. But yes in a nutshell, the Duncan Distortion is the original guitar pickup that was an uninstalled on Randy's White Jackson Concord... his black one had a JB. I originally installed a JB in my Jackson Dinky but it did absolutely nothing for it and it sounded sterile compared to the stock pickups, I installed a Duncan Distortion and that same guitar and now it grew a serious set of balls. Randy's polka-dotted V that was built by Carlson dovel was the guitar that had a DiMarzio super Distortion in the Bridge.

Great demo and great playing. And that Jackson Roads is awesome, I've been thinking of getting one. The Duncan Distortion sounds awesome. I've been a fan of that pickup since I began using one in the 80s. Is yours a Trembucker or regular spacing?

I was wondering because sometimes even TOM bridges require Trembucker spacing. I had a Yamaha Revstar that required Trembuckers and a Schecter with a TOM bridge that required regular spacing. One thing I've realized with mahogany is that it benefits from bright pickups like Distortions, JBs or Customs. I've been thinking of getting the Rhoads Jackson because it's available at a good price at my local Guitar Center and it's a good mod platform. I already own Duncan JBs, Distortions and Customs. What kind of amp did you use for this demo?@@stevedaigneault

i still have the stock pickup over my jackson js 32 king v.... i really like them, i really won't be changing them because i am going to get a ibanez iron label.. what i noticed a difference between jacksons & seymour duncan is their fluency of sound output ?? jacksons factory output is little bit bassier in this case ( its a basswood body) which is not bad... but seymour duncan cuts out the 10% etc bass and clips the soundflow in a uniform range which is great . When we mix , we use sound clipper as it clips the unwanted frequency and level it to get the uniform frequency ,the same thing seymour duncan pickups are doing here. they are balancing the output as a laminar flow while jacksons still have minor turbulence with bit of bassiness.. still i am happy with it... because in the end its all about what you play and are you enjoying it??? there is no competition to prove a a point... and this was a good review.. keep it up man..

To add i have jackson dinky js 11 with stock pickup and i feel that like my home .... however expensive guitar i may purchase but that js 11 dinky is really like my bed where i feel safe ... these days cheap guitars are not bad ... usa manufactured guitars are dearer because the wages are high while you get same job done in eastern world at much cheaper wages... these all are other economical factors which distinguish the price difference but it does not mean cheaper are necessarily bad..... get any guitar with good setup and good amp and enjoy

Just goes to show there is no reason to spend lots of money on upgrades. People believe their upgrades sound better however when A/B testing it reveals the difference is tiny and not necessarily better. I have a Ibby RG750 with stock Ibanez USA ceramic PUs and they actually have extended Highs and Lows and when I swapped them out for branded Dimazios the guitar sounded muddy and a loss of bite and growl. I couldn't wait to put back the stock PUs which were carefully designed to bring out the most in the Basswood body of the RG750. I have just ordered the SLX in Slime Green and I doubt I will ever need to touch anything...just enjoy that fabulous neck...lol Save yer hard cash folks:)

In-person when cranked up loud there is a huge difference. Originally when I watched this video I felt the same way and felt that there was not much of a difference but I eventually swapped out my stock Jackson pickups with a JB and made almost no difference whatsoever... kind of disappointing because everyone told me that would be a great replacement for my Jackson Dinky. I took out the JB and replaced it with a Duncan distortion and it is like a whole different guitar now, it grew a pair of balls real quick with the Duncan distortions... they have a lot more clarity, low-end tightness and overall more warm and girth.

You will definitely hear a difference between these two pick-ups that normal loud volumes. I did not hear a big difference with this video to and hesitated, I eventually swapped out my stock Jackson Bridge pickup with a Duncan distortion and it made a huge huge difference in overall Clarity, low end tightness and especially harmonic response. The pickup that did not do much for my particular Jackson Dinky was the Duncan JB... it actually sounded more brittle and sterile compared to the stock Jackson pick up and got replaced very quickly with a Duncan scored again... Now my Jackson dinky has a serious pair of balls.

I used to think that more expensive pick ups and Gear would make a difference. I've spent a lot of time and money to upgrade my guitar (Jackson Flying V J32RM). 5 years later my world went down when my cousin Gave me a really cheap chinese First Act guitar and due to a better understanding of how to set up your gear i made it sound competitive with my Main Jackson. The difference was little but the price range huge. A $120 guitar with stock cheap pickups Vs $500 guitar with $280 pickups. Dont make the same mistakes I've done and save your money for a better Amp.
