Sewing Some Hobbit-y Clothes & Answering Some Questions!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Behold, a true hodge-podge of a video! I wanted to do a more chit-chatty video and normally I'd chat about 'life and such', but there ain't much going on, so I asked you guys for some questions to answer while I made some cute hobbit-y stuff! I also PROMPTLY discovered that I can't multi-task, lol.
Enjoy and I hope this doesn't bore you too much!
Patterns I used:
Corset Vest: Butterick #B4669
Dress: "The American Weekly" #3865 (actually vintage, grabbed it on Etsy!)
Skirt: McCalls' "Two Hour Skirt" #5035

Hi guys!!! Sorry about the weird audio around 14 minutes. I had the ceiling fan on in the sunroom and didn't realize that the wind was strong enough to mess up my mic 😂🙈 I'll make sure to shut it off next time, my bad! If it's really bugging you, I do have subtitles for the video if you'd rather just turn the audio down 🙏

I started watching Bernadette because she speaks to the perfectionist in me and shows how to ensure something is made perfect. But! Watching your videos reminds me that I need to keep it lose and not worry too much about things being perfect because otherwise I’ll never learn how to sew by just fantasizing about making something. And now I’ve actually made a couple things!

Hi friends! I'm right there with you! I used to sew when I was a kid but I stopped years ago. After watching Bernadette and Rachel, I decided to pick it back up during the quarantine. I also bought myself a [modern] sewing machine to help the process a bit. It's been so much fun to try my hand at making clothes and stuffed animals; I'm so grateful to Bernadette and Rachel for inspiring me to get back into this hobby. I wish you all the best with your sewing adventures!! ☺️

@@ROSE-cn4ho Even if you have been sewing for years there is always something that is going to make you feel like a newbie, I think. But the feeling of adventure is great too. I am doing free sewing atm where I incorporate breaking rules and "mistakes" like wrong side out etc into the final project. I feel very creative with it and am having fun, and I try to make it where I really enjoy each finished piece. But the one I have to start atm has to be more disciplined again or it is not going to work right (because like you are trying to do, it is a historical one.)

No seam finishes, no real idea what I was doing, but it worked. 20 years later, I'm still sewing and enjoying it. The nieces and nephews love visiting, as I have hundreds of kids costumes that they get to play with. Happy sewing.

My weird sewing advice is start altering clothes, its a less intimidating way to get into it

  • @lynn858

    @lynn858

    4 жыл бұрын

Agreed. Staring at a piece of new, even cheap or repurposed fabric still makes me unreasonably nervous. But I’ve made some terrible choices in cheap thrift clothing I thought I could alter. The simplest alteration is shortening a hem, on a non-stretch, non slippery fabric like cotton or denim. Adding pockets into the side hem of a skirt is also pretty simple, and the sense of accomplishment is excellent. Taking a too small garment and making it larger, while it is sometimes possible, is an advanced project. Entirely shrinking an oversized garment is less difficult, but a frustrating place to start. Shortening skirts from the waist band is possible, but shortening from them hem is almost always easier. Taking in a gathered waist on a skirt is simple. Taking in the waist or a dress is do-able with darts, but you’re better off with a second person to pin it to your size. Slippery, silky fabrics can be frustrating. Sheer overlay fabrics require specialized, although not necessarily difficult, techniques. Stretch fabrics, including t-shirts are sometimes frustrating, but, start with a T-shirt that isn’t your favourite, and if it goes less than awesome, it’s a very cheap mistake.

@@carolharper1241 I am new to tailoring, so have just started using iron on interfacing. The book I got on tailoring is from 1982, written by 2 ladies, and I think it is Easy Tailoring. It shows how iron-on interfacing, like pellon, in different weights, really changed the traditional tailoring by making it faster and doable by regular seamstresses. I am starting to use it to fix a seam before sewing (iron-on sew-through type) or wonder tape tape baste washable type (harder for me to mess with so far.) I was sure my interfacing wasn't going to work for me at first, but using parchment paper so it won't stick, making sure everything is well steamed or damp, and not moving the iron work well for me now. My book helped me pick which fabrics work best with that easy method ad which weight to use for which fabric and project. Like hair canvas for a coat, for instance. But for this hobbit type project she can also look on her pattern to find the weight of the interfacing. For a vintage pattern you might have to ask on here to get the right weight to substitute your iron on interfacing. the book said some fabrics you can iron directly on the back of your fashion fabric. But there are some tricks to that, so another safe way to add it is to iron on to your lining.

I love you Rachel, I took two sewing classes in High School, how ever my new sewing machine, I got in 2014. The year after my father passed away, in 2013. As it turns out, I did not get a single present, that year, not even for my birthday, or Christmas, or any holiday which you traditionally get a some kind of a gift for,..! So in the first week of Jan 2014, my mother asked me, what I would like, to make up for all of that lack of gift giving. I had a choice, either a sewing machine, with all accessories, or a trip to Italy to visit my best friend,..? That was an easy one, I choose, the sewing machine, because I knew it would keep my mind busy, and help me to get over, my father passing away. It worked.

Hey, great video! 💕 I love the hobbit-like dresses! As a Taylor, I have a great and easy trick for the seam: sew with a large stich one cm (or how wide you want the seam to be) away from the edge of the fabric. The "nice side of the fabric" is facing down as you fold the fabric at the stitches line and fold again so that the edge of the fabric is covered. Then sew over it, done! 😊 You will get a very nice seam. If you have a rounded seam like here in the video I advise you to first pull one thread a little before folding. Then it lies nice and flat for stitching. I hope you can understand my explanation 😁😊 Have a nice day 🤗

I love your videos so much! You've inspired me to finally start sewing my own clothes and try to finally realize my own aesthetic of vintage/cottagegore. One tip I learned (by watching one of my other favorite seamstressea on youtbe, Gertie) for sewing hems more neatly is to run a stich a quarter inch all the way around the edge of the area you're hemming and use it as a consistent guide for pressing and pinning a double fold hem. You can use the edge of the presser foot as a guide and that way you can get a nice even double fold hem without getting out any extra tools.
