Dear Olha, I have read all the comments in all three saillmaking videos, and yet still have one question I’d like to ask. When you first stitch the sail material, you sew a double seam wherever two individual “cloths” are stitched together vertically in a real sail (as per The Young Officers Sea Anchor). In this first video, we can see you sewing the seams, but I could not tell if you fold the material first to produce the effect of an overlap all the way down each seam. Would you mind explaining that one critical step? Your sails are EXQUISITE! Thank you so much for sharing your incredible talent.

Thank you very much! I begin by folding the cloth in two and sewing along the fold. Then I open the cloth again and sew along the fold a second time. This is how I simulate a seam. This is repeated for each seam, keeping in mind that the usual cloth width is 22 inches.

@@OlhaBatchvarov When much younger, I lived on a 32' schooner for 5 years - sewed all the sails out of lightweight dacron, by hand! That was a giant pain in the wrists and arms! Glad that on these I can use a machine and much lighter cloth!
Добрый день, Ольга. Очень красиво. Для нанесения суперклея можно сделать насадку для тюбиков из ватной палочки, нагрев и растянув. По-моему проще наносить, чем иголкой.
@OlhaBatchvarov

Мой клей продавался с родними тонкими насадкакми но их не реально контролировать и если ви не хотите залить весь парус циакрином, то лучше ето сделать иголкой...
Yet another great and useful video. Mind if i ask what type/kind of fabric are you using for your sails?

Good job as always, Olha! What are the proportions of turpentine to bitumen that you use to color the sails?
@OlhaBatchvarov
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't have such a formula, I just add a few drops and test it on scraps of fabric from which the sails are made. Because the color also depends on the fabric...
Could you tell me what is the dimming of the sails (tincture)? Magnificent work! Congratultions!

Hi Olha, how can I soften & age the canvas sails in my Montane’s 1/72 model.love your channel
@OlhaBatchvarov

I use bitumen varnish (or tar) diluted with turpentine (or white spirit) from the concentration depends on the color...
Hi Olha, just wondering what sewing machine and model number you use ? Many thanks 😊

Little confused on the method. Did you sew a sail for use as a pattern to then use on the other fabric you made at the 4 minute mark in your video?
@OlhaBatchvarov
2 жыл бұрын
It was the same fabric. Immediately before and after sewing...
Another question Olga: what type of fabric/material do you use for making sails? I ask this because for my Corel/'La Sirene' I used (too) thick cloth and for my Sovereign of the Seas I prefer finer cloth.
