I’m sitting with my 89 year old grandmother going thru your channel and you bring her so much joy! She’s telling me how she learned to make her own clothing from school. She went to the store to buy patterns and materials to make her own clothes at home and that that was fairly common in the 40s and 50s. We’re Puerto Rican and when she moved to the US she moved into the projects with other Latino and black people. She said “even though we may not have been wealthy we made sure we looked good”. She’s pointing out so much of the techniques you’re doing and she remembers a lot of the things you have in your home!

Sewing two pieces of fabric together so you can treat them as one is called flat-lining, and it's the way pretty much everything was lined prior to the 20th Century. Bag lining--what we consider a "normal" lining, where you basically make the garment once, the lining version inside out, and then sew the two together at the edges--only became common when more loosely fitting and less-tailored garments became common. Flat lining results in fabric which is stiffer than either fabric by itself would be (and also, much stiffer than a bag-lined garment would be with the same fabrics).

@@dovie2blue I have two. A ham and a cylinder. The first most folx have seen and you lay curved seams or fabric on it to make it easier to press flat. The cylinder can be put inside sleeve for the same purpose. They’re not the same as a block but you could use it as one if you’ve made your own and they’re packed very very tightly. They’re really heavy! I think I used either Simplicity or McCalls sewing room pattern. It had other things for a craft room but I bought it just for a the pressing bits.

This coat is just absolutely beautiful!! My mother always wore a variation of this swing coat, right from the 1940’s, until she passed away in 2918. Usually in a “car coat “ length. I love that shoulder style and it’s flattering on most people. She had versions for very cold Canadian Winters, and lighter spring weights. Dressy were longer, and everyday coats were car coat length for ease of driving. I’m not sure if you’ve already done this, but a wider sleeve with 3/4 or elbow length sleeve made in a satin or silk would be called an Opera coat. I need to work up the nerve to make myself one. I love the vintage yet classic style that has really stood the test of time. I recently found a shorter navy wool version with a really long pointed collar at Zara! It has wrist length wider sleeves, same style as your pattern. I couldn’t believe I found one! I love your channel and style. ❤️🇨🇦

great to see such a sunny happy colour. Totally agree about the wools : bring back some spicy colours. There is to much camel and black wool. THe brighter hues allows cars to see us when walking at supper time or in the evening when it is already dark (i.e., 4:30 pm) or early in the morning (ie: 6:30am). Companies would be enhancing our safety and we can enhance our moods with joyful colours. Beautiful coat. THat pattern is amazingly versatile but you also have a great imagination and and are truly artistically creative.
