Hi Everyone,
I recently bought myself a new sewing machine . I am so please with it , I wanted to share a review with you.
It is the Pfaff Select 4.2 and I bought it here
www.sewingmachines.ie/shop/se...
It is quite a basic machine but extremely robust and has all the features that I need for my dressmaking. I love it.

I love my Pfaff 4.2 Andrea. I've had it about 9 months and like you I did a lot of research as I specifically wanted a mechanical machine. I almost exclusively use this machine these days. See also an extensive reply to another commenter who wanted to know if suitable for alterations work. Bridal sewing is my main work although in the off season I'm doing denim hems and zip replacements and general sewing all of which handle beautifully on the Pfaff! Thanks again. The sewing community is wonderful for sharing information.

Thank you for replying to the comment Moira, I had missed that question. I used to do bridal alterations when I had my previous Pfaff and it was a dream. I found it particularly brilliant on a french seamed beaded bodice if it needed just a little take in under the arms. I would manually use my hand wheel to sew over sequins or beads . This would be impossible with my computerised machine. It was also fabulous on thick seam intersections. It never skipped a stitch. I think for someone like me who is used to an industrial machine sewing this pfaff is perfect. Plus my hands automatically goes to the reverse lever and has the thread snipped before I remember that I have a button to press on my computerised machine to do this. Muscle memory 😊

So I am not the only one who never warmed up to their newer computerized machine. Plus there are moments, when my old mechanical really beats the new computerized one: for shirring and also for long buttonholes. For a pinafore dress I needed two long buttonholes in the bib to thread through the straps. No problem with a 4 step buttonhole, impossible for a one step buttonhole. But with 2 different machines I feel I can tackle nearly everything. Andrea, that was a lovely and clear review. Thanks and happy sewing.

I have a computerized modern Singer and it is total plastic crap. I also have a 1960's all-metal Singer and it is FANTASTIC. But I have an issue with top stitching jacket lapels as it tends to roll them as yo uhave no way of holding the under fabric

I have a Pfaff Ambition 620, a beautiful computerized machine that promised me the earth and that is just trouble after trouble. I'm selling it for a select 3.2. I met with a Pfaff technician, he told me that unfortunately my beautiful and very expensive machine was crap. I never had a mechanical machine, I'm a bit scared but he'll teach me (I could find the machine for cheaper on the internet but the dude will come at my place to teach me and will be my tech support if needed, worth the price to me). I just can't wait to try it and to never be bothered again. Even if it means I'll have to cut my threads by hand or turn the wheel to pin the needle instead of pressing a button. My choice is done. Im young, I love technology but I feel I've been scammed with the ambition 620. And it was around the same price than the select 3.2.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do the review Andrea! I am treating myself this year to a new machine and this was one of the ones I had on my list 😁 I’m going to go to a machine supplier hopefully soon to try out a few models and this is one that I do want to try, the only thing putting me off is the button hole as my current machine is a 4 step manual and can be a bit tedious and I never get them all exactly the same size……but at the same time I love a full mechanical…. Ohhh decisions decisions 🤣

Great review, I'm always tempted to get a manual machine as they are more sold and less likely to skip stitches, but then I like the speed of pressing buttons and having the shortcut buttons that come with a computerised machine.

That’s a beautiful machine. I have the 1475 cd made in Germany. It’s not manual, but it’s a great machine, I still use it . I have not tried to sew vinyl or leather with it, but I don’t see why it couldn’t do it. It’s a strong machine and heavy. Pfaff is a great brand. I also have a Creative vision embroidery and sewing machine. The bottom stitch is almost as nice as the top on the embroidery.

I’ve got the 3.2 and am very happy with it too, the main difference i saw was the automatic needle threader. I don’t know if you have seen, but there is an american youtuber who has done super great videos on how to use the 4.2 which have helped me out on how to use all of the functions. I think her channel is heirloom creations.

A few years ago I picked up a secondhand PFAFF Tipmatic 6152 that is very similar to this. It is the best sewing machine I've ever used (I've never owned anything fancy and I've yet to try a computerized system). My Tipmatic needs maintenance and if that doesn't fix the issues I've just started having, I will replace it with this one. It looks like all the attachments and features are pretty much identical.

Hi, I use this model for my business which is mainly bridal alterations. Highly recommend it - as you know bridal fabrics are tricky! Lace, chiffon, satin etc all go through without a hitch. My fancy computerised machine is barely used these days - it probably has the sulks! Like Andrea the lack of light isn't a negative as the other points far outweigh it. I have good task lighting all around my work table anyway. I'd also like to say I make tartan waistcoats for a local hotel staff and I prefer to do my buttonholes on this machine. I get super results! Apologies Andrea if I jumped onto the reply but had to endorse your feedback for this Pfaff 4.2. So thanks for taking the time to do the vlog. Best wishes x Moira x

I just bought this machine but mine not that noise. I to did not need all the fancy stitches let's face it all u ever use is the straight stitch and zig zag . Most new machine are made of plastic if u ask other brand what in the machine they look at u like u have twenty heads. The shop call the repair guy for me and ask if it's made with metal parts and he said yes. Just like u I have a 6091 from 34 years ago and it works great its just that my button hole off on it .I have been looking for 2 years at all brands just could not buy anything else plus all my old feet I have bought fits on this model. Even thought I could have bought the high end model there made with plastic parts and the weight will give it away if it's plastic happy sewing hope this helps anyone

I had a beautiful machine. Until it was damaged beyond repair. PFAFF 2012. I think it was made in the late 60's. What was the one you had? I am nervous about buying from the new group. They are all made in China. Pfaff,. Husquvarna, and Singer. If you flip your machine upside down on the bottom does it say made in China? I had bought a Husquvarna since the company restructure and I was always taking it to the shop. Looking for another machine and I think I want to go back to Pfaff.
