I admire you for taking up sewing at your age. I love sewing. I can follow the pattern’s instructions, but getting it to fit my body is where I fall short. I subscribed to Bluprint and have been watching videos. I’ve learned a lot. My advice to you is always make a muslin. I have saved myself a lot of money by not cutting into my main fabric right off the bat. My last garment I made 2 muslins because I made a lot of changes and needed to know how they fit on me. You can do it and once you start having successes you’ll be hooked.

Oh Viv, you really make me giggle, I came close to letting out a snort when you had your chin on the table!!! This is why I love ya, you are so authentic & real. Thanks for the valuable info of curving around the bias tape with the iron. I have not done it that way & I can see this will help! Great idea to show the making of this top to beginners because they can achieve the confidence to continue to sew more things. You are an inspirational teacher. Thanks Viv! Take care and God Bless.

I see this video was done 3 yrs. ago. It was most helpful to actually see it done, I wish you would do more like these. Don’t be concerned about your finger nails, I remember as a little girl, my grandmother bit her nails all the years my mother and I lived with my grandparents. She was quite the sewer too, in her young years, went to a school In Philadelphia for it, used to make grandfather’s silk suits, children’s clothes and more I’m sure. When in school, was so good, society ladies, back then, came to her to make their dresses and other clothes. I didn’t see her sew anything, but I do remember her hand sewing, it was really fine and pretty. Your top, to me, would look better a couple inches longer.

I started sewing in 1970 and sewed my own clothing, I was 13. I made some curtains for my mom was the only other things I made. At some point, the price of fabric and patterns couldn't compete with WalMart and my budget, plus patterns never fit right anymore, so I stopped making clothes. The closest I came was after I had my daughter, I made her clothes and all of her Halloween costumes, which I loved doing, but they weren't fitted, and I made high chair pads, etc. Then I went into making more things like totes bags, diapr bags, kitchen covers for toasters, curtains, etc. I thought I gave up clothes sewing forever. After watching you (you appeal to my sewing roots), and Joy Bernhardt, (she appeals to my later quilting side), I want to start sewing my own clothing and begin quilting again. In fact, sewing my own clothes has also inspired me to work harder to lose weight as well. I have been overweight for years because I have horrible thyroid problems, however, after 35 years of struggling, I think my dr has finally hit on a winning number on my meds. It is slow progress, but I'll take what I can get! I recently had back surgery after waiting for the stars to align for 7 years, (meaning right dr and right ins co to get it done). It went well, my dr was awesome, but it was a 3 hour surgery and it is taking forever to heal and for the pain to go away. I had to have 6 screws and rods and 2 replaced disks. My plan is work on the weight and getting well, then start on my sewing. I can't wait! Thanks so much for all your time you take to do these videos! I enjoy watching everything from fabric hauls, sewing and fashion shows! Take care, bye for now!

Wonderful to hear from you, Marilyn! I’m so sorry for your medical issues and pain, but your writing reveals a joyful spirit and creative mind - two crucial healers that no medicine can duplicate. Yay you!!! All of your tremendous sewing through the years means it’ll be a breeze to pick up garment patterns again. And it’s so much fun. There are fabrics galore to acquire online if you’re running low (I read a sewing forum topic the other day about a woman who has run out of fabric. She has none!! I can’t imagine...) I hope and pray your back will recover after such brutal surgery and that your pain will be a thing of the past. And weight loss is fabulous. I agree that sewing can really help us keep our weight in check. I greatly enjoyed your letter and send wishes for sewing success - not that you need them at your skill level - and that your projects will give you much enjoyment.💕

Love you right back, Michelle! I ping pong between thinking I have a sickness and thinking how much I love all my fabrics and patterns. It’s like Joy Bernhardt said recently, even if she doesn’t sew it all, it has more than paid for itself in the happiness it’s given to her. This resonates with me!! I hope to sew it all - I have a 10 year goal that I am 2 years into - but let’s get real: I’d be sewing 24/7 until I have blue hair and a walker. But I like to acquire lavishly and so do you, and we can decide that’s a great and wonderful thing!! Viva la fabric & patterns, a toast and applause!!💐🥂👏👏

You’ll do fine, Kathi! Congrats and I’m cheering you on. I think you’re wise to work with cotton because it’s generally a pleasure - it holds a press well and doesn’t slide around under the machine. Iron your seams (either open or to one side) as you go and I predict you’ll wind up with a darling dress😃 May this be the start of many more sewing projects to come!👏👏

I not only really appreciated but thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial! And I would love to see how you made the skirt - especially sewing the elastic on the waist and then turning it under. I have never made one that way, but I don’t like the old pull-through method I was taught in Home Ec a hundred years ago! Ha! So please give us a tutorial on it as well! I hear you about the Christmas spirit! We haven’t put up a tree and probably won’t. David was in the hospital just before Thanksgiving so his medications could be changed and adjusted. He had his first coronary artery bypass surgery in 1987 when he was 40, and the 2nd just 3 years ago. He is doing well - in fact cardiologists are amazed when they look at his history! I just thank God he’s had too-notch surgeons, cardiologists, and it truly has been a “But God” type of thing! But in addition, our younger daughter is graduating next Friday with her Master’s - completed while she works full-time as a case manager for CPS, and works the required Internship which was quite detailed! Things have been really busy around here! So with all that I had to bow out of the Christmas program at church - and oh, how I love to sing! All in all, Christmas will come, and I pray the Lord blesses you and your family greatly during this most wondrous season! You have been such an inspiration to me and so many others as well this year! May your Christmas truly be merry and your New Year be bright and blessed!!!

Prayers for David, Sharron! I think it was wise for you to bow out of the Christmas program at church - they’ll miss you but something has to give. Women are in danger of running themselves ragged at Christmas, and we all know that isn’t the point. Good for you to cut some things out and prioritize. Lots going on in your family!🙏Bless your daughter as she embarks on her career doing good work for those who often have no voice.

Thank you so much Viv for doing that sewing demonstration! I have always pushed the thought of using bias binding to the back shelf not knowing how to apply it. Knowing now that it needs to be ironed out and then sewn 3/8" from the edge of the fabric has just given me what I need to feel free to use it and to try my hand at knit tops. Thank you, thank you!!! Loved the look of the dec fabric pants. Loved the contrasting thread idea as well. I will try my hand at that. I had to laugh at your demonstration of where you are putting all your fabrics! I don't feel badly now at my containers 'filled' with fabric and no space under my dining table, which is now my sewing table, or my extra cutting table having containers filled with fabric underneath it as well. I was beginning to feel that I had an octopus of containers reaching out into the rest of the house (and I sort of do....), but that's all okay, because I'm not the only one!!!! Lol! Love your videos, love, love, love them!!!

Love watching you,Viv. I’m ready to buy this pattern and try it. I have a tip for you too. Go to a carpet store and get some carpet samples. They are nice rectangles with bound edges. Put your machines on them. It will buffer the sound, keep them stationary and give a place to grab pins etc. most sewing stores have their machines on sound buffering tables. You’ll think you have a new machine.

Hi vivmom, thank you for showing us how you sew with serger and machine. You taught me a good lesson and now I don’t feel alone using machine first then the serger to 🎉finish edges. I tried the other day on a muslin (stretchy) to sew it on the serger entirely. What a disaster. Then I watched your Dec 7 ,2019 and said thank you. She is my kind of sewer. First machine then serger. So thanks for doing your channel. What a good teacher and easy to follow. Thank you!

Hi Karen, welcome! I hope you’ll be here for a good long while. I adore beginner garment sewers and try to choose projects that aren’t intimidating in any way, but still look cute and stylish. It can be done! Sewing doesn’t have to be complicated. It is always work - make no mistake - but it does not have to be wildly intricate and baffling. As your skills grow, you’ll progress naturally to more fitted or complex patterns, if you’d like to. At any rate, you’re a dear to write; thanks!

I made this top today. I had received this pattern free when I bought some fabric and have had it a while, so you inspired me to make it. It looks so good on you, Vivmom. I graded the pattern. Cut the medium, with extra long sleeves and added length. However, sadly, the neckline is very wide. If I made it again, I would have to cut the neckline so it wasn't as wide. I also had to serge a good inch from the sleeves, underarm (as it is slightly batwing) and the sides. It is freezing here in the UK, so with that wide neckline, it is a summer T shirt only. So I would advise cutting the neckline slightly smaller than the pattern and trying it out, as you can always make it larger later but cannot do anything to make it smaller once cut!

Hi Yorkie! Try a turtleneck under it, you might love it. I’m so internally hot all the time that short sleeves will work for me in winter. I hope your top isn’t a total loss with the wide neckline! Good for you for whipping it up in no time.👏👏

I’m so happy to hear this, Lois! I had taken a long break from sewing (years) and then sewed a dress on a whim in late 2016. Something clicked and I was hooked. I was feeling so bittersweet about my kids growing up and moving on, and sewing gave me comfort and an identity. Starting the KZread channel was also a bit of a whim, I thought maybe 50 people (friends and family) might watch, so this has been very gratifying. I don’t want sewing to ever fade away, and all the fast fashion in stores is quite the competition. Nothing compares to the creativity of making your own clothes, using your brain and wits to get around problems, honing your tenacity, and coming up victorious! Even if it’s a 2 piece top, I consider all sewing valid and important. Your sewing machine will be so glad to see you again!😃

Great video. I also have the the Brother 1034D Serger and you're right...it's awesome. I find that it's not quite as noisy if I place a pad underneath it. I actually made my own sewing pad by sewing together several layers of leftover fleece fabric and then placed it underneath my serger. Works like a charm and absorbs a lot of the vibration and noise.

At 65 years old I have chewed my nails my whole life. When times are tough and stress is high, like now at the holidays, I also pick the cuticle until they bleed. I don’t mind your “ugly” fingernails and they look a whole lot better than mine. Super duper video. Thanks for taking the time to walk us thru a knit top.

Oh Susan, I love you!! I have struggled with this compulsion for-seeming-ever, and it fills me with shame. I’ve tried all the fixes - painting my nails with expensive foul tasting goo, self hypnosis, prayer, manicures. My son Colin was able to beat nail biting by saying into a mirror, out loud, every morning, “I will not bite my nails anymore.” He did this for days and he is nail-biting free. I really need to get on board with this, problem is I sail right into the day and forget to do it. I always say I have a 2-headed beast to kill: if I grow out my nails, then I pick the cuticles and skin. If I leave the cuticles and skin alone, I’ve bitten off all my nails. As a believer I’ve prayed endlessly about this but I am still not delivered. Well, to hear that you suffer too is comforting. (That sounds rather selfish of me.) But it is. Thank you for writing and letting me know I’m not alone. I believe we will both be free of this habit/burden one of these days and oh what a happy day it will be. I’ll add you to my prayers.💕

Yay Virginia! Thanks for such a sweet note.💕I’m finding that these tops are versatile - they look great layered. So that takes care of cold weather, to just toss on a turtleneck or long sleeve tee under them. Of course, I’m so internally hot all the time that I find short sleeves in winter fine. The tops can also be dressed up for work or church with lace or other trims. We could even cut the underarm closer for a more fitted look. I like loose and slouchy because that leaves plenty of room for Christmas cookies.
