Severe thunderstorm passing over Bedford, UK - 10 September 2023
Фильм және анимация
It was a hot Sunday afternoon when strong thunderstorms were expected to develop across eastern England. An electrically active storm developed south of Milton Keynes just after lunchtime but it was too far west for a direct hit. Just when I thought the potential was over, a storm quickly developed five miles to the south of Bedford and became potent very fast, proven by the lightning map displaying a strike every five seconds. I couldn't see any lightning (with the exception of a positive CG at 3:19) while the thunder continuously roared overhead. It wasn't too long before the deluge commenced and it brought some very strong winds along with it, making me think I could've been impacted by a microburst, which was also evident by the rain shaft spreading out near the ground before the storm hit. Hailstones were present too, and you can see them bouncing off the patio at 6:03 if you look closely. The storm was over as fast as it started and cleared northeast towards Northamptonshire and South Lincolnshire, where even larger hailstones fell and a majestic shelf cloud was photographed by many.

Great video bud! I felt activity dropped massively as it came close to Rushden, the storm seemed to split towards us, big chunk went over you and then re joined Peterborough way. A lot of high level lightning and quiet thunder or so constant you just didn't notice it so much.

Yes, I was really surprised at the lack of visible lightning. A few more CGs and this would've been the best daytime storm I've seen in the UK!
Awesome! I was jealous watching this storm grow as it headed to the Wash on Radar, whilst stuck in Exeter, saw that 2000Js of CAPE was on the cards the day before. Nearly made the 4 hour trip... nearly.

Must've been frustrating to many who decided to chase - these storms were travelling around 40mph looking at the radar, not to mention the model discrepancy on the day of the event!

@@ZakM1 Yeah, mid-level jet driven storms (enhanced by runaway outflow) are impossible to chase. I can empathise, same thing happened to us for the June 11th MCS. Steering flow was only about 20mph but the storm grew and accelerated out of London across the country at 40-50mph riding the self-perpetuating gust front. I was driving west at an average of 40mph to try and get ahead of it and the storm overtook us! It left it's own anvil behind over the midlands whilst the squall line thrusted into Wales. Mad dynamics
It sounded a bit elevated to me. Very muffled thunder.

Yes, and the strong winds made it even more difficult to listen for the thunder
