Severe Thunderstorm in Kokomo, Indiana with Severe winds, Hail. April 26, 2017.

Finally into springtime! And April 26, 2017 was a day of interesting spring weather, as a thunderstorm complex originating in Missouri traveled northeastward into Indiana and initiated additional convection ahead of it. One of these more individual thunderstorms impacted Kokomo that evening, and brought with it severe winds, hail of dime to nickel size (estimated at our location), and EPIC clouds!! Although this day was remembered for severe weather here, we are nearing the one month anniversary of a tragic event in the storm chasing community.
On March 28, 2017, three storm chasers were involved in a vehicle collision just west of Spur, Texas. In a shocking and terrible event, Kelley Williamson, Randy Yarnall, and Corbin Jaegar were all killed in the crash. It's a loss that still leaves a hole in the storm chasing community, Kelley and Randy were great chasers who inspired many and in doing so potentially helped to shape the future of storm chasing, and Corbin Jaegar was a rising chaser who would have become better known in the coming years. My thoughts and prayers are still with their families and friends, and with the people who worked with them and were fans of them.

    Severe thunderstorms vary in their intensity, but if they meet severe criteria (wind gusts AOA 58 mph and hail of quarter size or larger) then they are capable of doing damage and causing harm. If you are in the path of a severe storm, take shelter away from windows on the lowest floor of a building. But don't panic, as the storm will likely be over shortly.

  • @lizzieharting9833

    @lizzieharting9833

    This is late and you’ve probably seen what the severe storms can do/cause. But where I live, (Indiana but not Kokomo, I live in Marion), some storms can be bad and other times, the weather people exaggerate. It’s never really as bad as they make it to be. Which is a good thing. But if they are actually severe, the winds are sometimes 60-80mph, hail isn’t usually that bad and flooding happens... tornadoes don’t really touch down, at least not the part of Indiana I’m in... but if they do, they’re usually weak. EF-0, maybe an EF-1... but it’s usually strong winds, lots of rain and hail...

    Ethan B It was almost surreal the way day seemed to end immediately,and night began. There was no sunset to speak of, it just went dark as those clouds rolled in. Compared to the tornadoes we had in August, this felt more ominous for some reason. I was at St. Joan of Arc school picking up my nephew during the tornado outbreak, and even though it was unexpected, I never got that "oh shit" feeling like I did when these storms passed through and night turned back into day, briefly. I have a couple of pictures taken from the St. Joan of Arc parking lot if you'd like to see them. By a couple, I literally mean 2. They were taken about 2:55pm, and showed an obvious tornado approximately 10 miles west of Dixon and maybe a quarter mile north of Lincoln.

    The severe thunderstorms are crazy up there. We get a lot of storms (I mean a LOT) in Florida. Occasionally, one or 2 will be severe. They typically come in as a gust front before the rain, with some gusty winds. They calm down a bit. The lightning and rain is the worst. Under the crazy downpours, its not super windy, but there will be some freak, strong periods of wind the first 5-10 minutes. Its more tropical weather, not those scary looking supercells.

  • @EthanBWeather

    @EthanBWeather

    5 жыл бұрын

    I do enjoy those kinds of thunderstorms, but the separation of outflow winds from rain core typically indicates an outflow-dominant storm. However, with the high moisture down in Florida, torrential downpours aren't uncommon. Although I do love the severe weather and supercells in the Midwest, I do occasionally want a storm like you have down there!

  • @EthanBWeather

    @EthanBWeather

    Yes a very interesting and beautiful cloud. It's Cloud Atlas name is Volutus, but it's more commonly called a role cloud. In this case, it formed at the interface of relatively warmer (and therefore more buoyant) air ahead of the storm cluster and much colder, dense air within the strong downdraft. This isn't extremely common with severe storms, but it's certainly amazing to see! Roll clouds may also form along outflow boundaries where an arcus cloud (shelf cloud) has separated from the thunderstorm but maintains a horizontal rolling motion due to differences in air density.

Luckly I didn't get hit by the EF3 tornado. If it kept moving like 2 to 3 more miles, my town would of been destroyed and I could've gotten injured or killed.
