That style of grinder (only air tools) is the only thing you'll see used in an actual body shop for the reasons you stated - no heat, no shooting sparks across the shop, no worries about thinning the sheet metal :)

The DAMNED auto industry could have prevented this kind of rust damage years ago but didn't and won't instead they cover these areas with stinking plastic so we as consumers don't realize the damage being done.

Ithink if you read directions on some newer fillers they say for use over bare metal only . The one I use will stick to any metal. Oldays primer and bondo may have a hard time sticking so Chrysler came up with the epoxy thing In professional shops they dont use it any more they use metal to metal primer. I did not know people still used epoxy until I watched some utube stuff. It is a good adhesion promoter in the old days we used it on new parts and bumpers it would still work for that.
@LakesideAutobody

Good points Roger - your right most shops go direct to metal - filler and primers - no epoxy 1st. Thanks for your comment :)
In step 4 prepare for filler after sanding the welds you spray the welds with something what is that? Thanks for the Great video

That was a mini sand blaster. It cleans the welds really well - filler stick awesome to sand blasted metal. The blaster is listed in the vid description and the blasting media is from Tractor Supply - red or black bag. Feel free to ask any other ?s 👍💯

Professional RUST Repairer... HQ in MICHIGAN... that is job security!! It's heartbreaking how many late model trucks and cars rot here. : ( Question, and I know nothing about welding, but will water get in that lap joint? Will that be more prone to rust in the future than a butt joint? Why a lap joint over a butt joint on that patch panel? ( just curious, not second guessing a professional). Thank you for all you do and sharing amazing content and videos!
@LakesideAutobody
Жыл бұрын
Here's a good video explaining in better detail than I could explain here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/fH190dCDf7nYn5c.html All or most quality body shops use a combination of lap and butt depending on the area you are welding. Lap for areas where you can tap the seam down butt for more rigid areas like door jambs, rockers, edges, etc. I think lap lasts longer than butt actually - probably cause you can tap the seam down and the filler acts as a buffer between the seam and the finish. You really don't want a seam right under the finish - most likely the seam will end up showing later on.
Man I love this. I bought a mig welder to fix my van. What is meant by “tap” the seam? Are you hitting it with a hammer, or just filling with body filler?

@@LakesideAutobody I just picked up a 2009 RAM with a damaged front fender, and some bad rust in the usual places. Trying to avoid buying repair panels for everything. Easily 600$ probably to do everything that way. But shaping wheel wells and rear lower quarters feels daunting just to save a few hundred bucks.
