    Imagine life without the sounds of violins. It must be high on the scale of near perfect creations. Thanks for sharing the mechanics of how they work. I was totally stunned when you first popped open a violin.

    I'm not a string player. Twoset made me interested. Maybe I'll start playing to help combat arthritis. Dr says it's a good idea. But I love making, and learning about stuff, so here I am...

    Hi Olaf, I'd love to know more about how you achieve the hollow when planing the fingerboard. Is the Lie Nielsen block plane you're using slightly curved? Or do you carefully take shavings out of the middle of the fingerboard only, and then smooth it out with the sanding blocks? How carefully do you measure the amount of hollow as you go? Thanks :)

    Why scratch it all up after you made it perfect with the plane?

  • @mrgolftennisviolin

    @mrgolftennisviolin

    3 жыл бұрын

    The plane has a flat sole, so no matter how finely the blade is set there will always be tiny bevels, rather than a smooth curve. The sanding block / paper makes the final surface a smooth curve.

    @@mrgolftennisviolin excellent. I make furniture and the feel between planed surfaces and sand is great. Now the sanding makes sense.
