Setting up an ignition switch for a petrol engine in ETHOS

In this video we look at how to add an ignition switch to ETHOS for an RC petrol or gas engine. First or all, we add a basic 3-way switch. Then I show the method I use; which uses a momentary switch. With my method, the ignition also is switched off when you apply the throttle cut.
With this video I have tried a new approach; removing the intro sequences and getting straight in to the video. Please let me know what your thoughts are on this? Are you happier to get immediately in to the video. Or do you prefer the title sequences?

    After having reviewed all the previous viewer comments, I too finally understand your process. I was initially concerned that all you were doing was killing the throttle servo’s movement. The use of the servo was a little confusing, but “that” was meant to demonstrate the passing of “signal" to the iBEC/Opto Kill. Viewers can’t see you physically triggering the backside buttons, and may take a few rewinds to pick that out. Many flyers I know are accustomed to the standard two-position “H” switch as a killer for ESC or Petrol signals. With FrSky making the H switch momentary it gets confusing. I’m also new to FrSky and your video content “is” helpful. Thanks!

    clear as mud, I'm new, you assume a lot of knowledge, I'll repeat and stop many times. but lets see if I got it now. just plugged it in doesn't work for me, shows the switch working but ignition doesn't arm using a tech aero IBEC. tried using two position switch , don't know why you're demoing a three position switch for an on off function. Anyway maybe I'm not doing it right for a two position switch, I just need a simple solution.

    I am using a default throttle cut functionality and just assigned the opto kill switch to the same switch. Dramatically simpler and I think it does the same thing.

    @@MrD well if I move it to a different switch they will operate independently. Btw do we really need throttle cut for gas engines? Since the plane is idling anyway and you can’t just kick the radio and start it and get injured.

    How do I change the safe position of a switch? I am using switch SB for ignition. And have it set with the switch down (towards me) for ignition off. However when I turn my Tx on it gives me a switch warning for that switch when actually the ign. is off. I would prefer a warning if the ignition is turned on.

  • @MrD

    You can set the warning in the model menu, then the page called Checklist. I'm pretty certain it's Checklist. My mind went blank for a moment, and I don't have ETHOS here to check.

    I'm new to Ethos (10 years Spektrum) and so far love the X20S. Learning a lot from your videos, but can't figure out how you basically made the momentary button into a toggle switch (first push on, second push off). I'd love to set my ignition that way. I think that would make a great instructional video ;)

    Hi Karsten, I've shown how I set up that ignition switch at kzread.info/dash/bejne/fXaDldGYkdScoag.html If you don't want to incorporate the throttle cut in to the off side, you can just use logical switch 1 and have SI down for both the on and off triggers.

    Hi Darren, I'm wanting to use a Rcexl opto kill switch, I've now found that it doesn't work with the reciver, 10ch, seems to me that for some reason the switch doesn't recognize it, I have tried the switch with another tx,rc, works fine, any ideas, thanks Philip

    The channel shouldn’t make any difference to the opto switch. Which receiver are you using? Did you have 1-16 set for the channels when you bound the receiver too?

    Hi Darren, Thanks for your informative videos. I’m in the decision process of getting the Frsky tandem. It will be for a freewing 80mm f14. Do you think it would be possible to program this transmitter to lock of the flaps when the wings start sweeping and stop them dropping whilst the wing is swept? Also interested about the 900 and 2.4 frequency. Do you think this helps for extra signal strength? I use spektrum, really good radio but loose signal in one location. Any help I’d appreciate. Thanks-Ant

  • @MrD

    @MrD

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, locking out the control surfaces when the wings sweep would not be a problem. The 900 working with the 2.4 is for making sure that the signal still gets through, even if one of the frequencies suffer issue. From WiFi for example. To be honest though, just using the 2.4 FrSky, you’ll see a big improvement over Spektrum. At my flying site, there is a spot where every so often some guys have RF issues. They’re all flying Spektrum. But I’ll fly through the same area and not have a problem whatsoever.

    @@MrD okay that’s great to know. That’s interesting that even their 2.4 is possibly more robust. It’s a big investment as I’ll transfer multiple aircraft over with Frsky receivers. Will I be okay with the standard version over the “s”, in terms of functionality? I guess it will be a nice learning curve with the new system. What ten channel and 8 channel receiver would you recommend that runs both the 2.4 and 900? Thanks a lot for your reply. Much appreciated -ant

  • @MrD

    @MrD

    No problem Anthony. From my experience, the RF is definitely more robust than Spektrum. At my field there is Spektrum, FrSky, Futaba, and Jeti. Only one has these RF issues. The “S” receivers have built in stabilisers. So with the R10 Pro and the SR10 Pro, the only difference is that stabiliser. Receivers with “Pro” in the name are safe to use with engines that have electronic ignitions. But can be used on anything. Receivers without the “Pro” should only be used on electric models or glow engines. Receivers with a G prefix are made for gliders. They have a built in variometer. Again, they’re fine for use on anything other than electronic ignition engines. The tandem receivers are still very new. So far, only the TD MX has been released. But the TD R18 will be released pretty soon. However, any receivers with an SBUS IN port, can use another receiver as a redundant receiver, so you can still have 2.4 with 900MHz as a backup.

    @@MrD thanks for this in depth message. I’ve just purchased the transmitter! Really looking forward to getting dug in to this new avenue and learning curve. I’ve had a browse of the receivers that you mention. Are there two receivers that you would recommend for both 6 channel + gyro built in and a 10 channel? These will be for EDF jets. I’d like the telemetry to let me know signal strength. Not fussed with other data. This will be the last question! :O. Cheers Darren, really informative info-Ant

    @@anthonyjayakody3356No problem Ant. The only option for 10 channel with a stabiliser is the SR10 Pro. This one also has dual battery redundancy, so great for a backup receiver battery. You can use the SR6, SR8 Pro, or SR10 Pro on the 6 channel models. I’ve not seen the price difference between the SR6 and SR8 Pro. But if it’s not much, the 8 may be worth getting. As you have more options later on. For example, I always get the R6 over the R4, even if it’s going in a 4 channel model. As the price difference is only about £1.50. So for the flexibility, it’s not worth getting the R4.
