Setting up a (Relatively) Inexpensive Blast Cabinet/Compressor/Dust Collector (Mini Projects Ep.6)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Media and sandblasting has always been something I wanted to have in my arsenal, but setting up a cabinet for it seemed like it would always be too expensive/complicated. We sure find a way to make it complicated, and it isn't EXACTLY cheap, but for all of the options this setup provides I think it came together pretty nicely.
Cabinet: HobbyPro HP-75
Compressor: Kobalt Quiet Tech 26gal
Vacuum: Rigid 3.5HP
Dust Collector: Dustopper

The shear level of jerryrigging in this video is glorious, and that's why I love this channel. It's just a different experience from other channels.

It’s an authentic experience to what people are really going to experience. Hate videos where people hide their mistakes or issues they run into.
Your writing and narration skills are amazing dude!

Although I own a blast cabinet, I watched this video. Other than the illeism, I agree with you.
Your videos are incredibly well narrated and I don't think, there are others that get me quite that excited when I see them in my subscription box, so much so that sometimes I won't watch them immediately but keep them for later as a treat. Thank you for your work, it is highly appreciated.
I’ve had that air compressor for about 8 months now. Using it almost everyday and it has been a game changer around the shop. Super quiet and provides plenty of air. Thinking about getting into a sandblaster setup next. Great video!
I 100% love the budget diy version of this. your cars are awesome and you truly do it in an accessible budget for a single young person, nowadays. thanks for your videos.
Owns a pickup and an SUV,but uses the Firebird to pick up a large air compressor. LOL

Another wonderful compilation of you MacGyvering and half assing everything. This is literally my favorite Car channel on KZread. It gives guys like me hope.
A blasting cabinet is a game changer when it come to working on older cars. Props for ingenuity and making it work.
My favorite method for rust removing is the “lazy way...” I just get the whole part and chuck it in a big ol bucket of evapo- rust. A good washing and she’s ready for paint!
I have the same compressor and absolutely love it. You're right, its quiet and very easy to move around (for it's size). And the whole thing feels really thought out with good hose/cord storage, flat top so you can place things there, nice paint job and rubber, etc. I'm surprised more people don't go for it. Mine does actually work plugged into an extension cord or strip, but it will trip the breaker every now and then as it approaches cut-out pressure.
Everytime I watch one your videos it makes me want to get my garage cleaned out and work on a project car. Cleaning out close to 30 years of stuff in a huge garage is a project on to itself.
I've always wondered how these are set up and used. Thanks for making this video!
Great video, I’m about to set up a cabinet and hadn’t considered lots of the items you have shown. Will make setting up a whole lot easier. Thank you, cheers…..
So glad you included video of peeling the plastic off the gauges
The quality of your content is unmatched. 👌🏽👌🏽
Such a well informed, clear and practical information. Think I need this set up in my life.
Did this same type of budget blasting cabinet thing a few years back. Though I focused the most on the cabinet. Bought a used one that when new was much more expensive. Still worked, only needed new gloves and a new window frame. Got those from TP Tools. It's a side loader and I agree with you regarding the ability to load bigger stuff into it. However top loaders come with their own issues and I didn't want those issues. Anyway, your removal configuration is funny/interesting. I say that because I didn't bother with the dust stopper. I just hooked up the shop vac directly to the outlet of the cabinet. Worked great, no issues with media or dust getting into the shop vac and causing a problem. I also agree that it's not something you use that much. In fact I haven't touched it in a couple of years now. Anyway good luck with it.
I'm very excited to see this used in the future. Lowkey, I've been dying inside with all the rusty parts.
Great video - I really enjoy your approach to your projects and your narration style - the "your friend after a night of white wine spritzers" was a fine comedic touch. :)
You definitely make the supplies you have work for the jobs you need to get done 👍
An absolutely necessary tool to have! Another great video, keep em coming!
Hey Fuzzy Dice. I like to blast most areas of rust. I like glass bead because it gets in all the little holes. Thanks for sharing.👍👍
I really have liked my blast cabinet. It has proven to be a god send on cleaning some parts on my 67 Stang. Mine is the harbor freight model.
So when you power that whole contraption up, do all the lights in town dim? Cool rig.
Oh man I lost my mind at the '91 Firebird part. I've been there many a time. You are someone that understands the struggle...
Love TP Tools, I have bought a couple industrial sized blast cabs locally for scrap metal prices and then used their DIY cabinet kits to refit them. My big cabinet was about 5 grand brand new and I have like 400 bucks in it.
Someone on TikTok just recommended this vid to me since I really want to add a sand blaster to my repertoire. My issue has also been selecting an appropriate cabinet, or building one myselfl. Very clear and professional video! Reminds me a lot of my adventures modifying my parts washer. Which I also still want to put on wheels, hahaha. I can tell we have some similar tastes and research penchants as well. The Kobalt quiet compressor is at the top of my list for an upgrade. Also looking at Hulk Power by EMAX from Home Depot and California Air Tools. Believe it or not, we even have the same ear muffs. Some really great ideas here and I'll definitely be referring back to it!
This video literally sounds like my exact situation and how I got started except I went with the harbor freight one. Superb video.
This is all great information. I am looking to set up a small blasting cabinet such as this but do not want to drop the coin on a 10CFM+ compressor for how little I will be using it. Thanks for posting this as I will likely follow in your footsteps with a slightly higher degree of confidence than I would have had otherwise.
Nice setup, have fun with it 👍
new tools are always awesome.
Well done and good setup. Putting the compressor in the bird I laughed hysterically, who said a car can't haul lol. Good job and for sure have no excuses now lol.
Great video as usual, still waiting for the big block :)
Didn’t know you were in MD! Same here, used to love in a small town called Poolesville
Solid. Clearer now I know I need to buy a compressor - it just makes it that annoying price, but not out of this world!
My auto paint instructor told me when I was setting up my garage for best results you need a 100ft of line before a water separation system to function properly. So just spool up 100ft of hose before your water separator and it should stop your moisture issues.
Excellent content and presentation!
Great video from a fellow Marylander! Kudos!
I have a similar setup, with a HF cabinet (on wheels), a Craftsman 5hp, 5 gal shop vac, and an Oneida Dust Deputy on top of a HD 5 gal bucket. My air source is a CH 5hp, 22 gal compressor. Like yours, it's not the most streamlined setup, but it definitely does the job. Consider adding a ground to your vacuum hose to reduce the static electricity buildup.
I’m stupid excited for the big block swap! Can’t wait to watch the videos! Keep up the awesome work your by far my favorite KZreadr!! I may or may not have bought a 4wd first gen s10 because of the blazer hahaha
I've seen setups where people build dust collectors like that with old squirrel cage style furnace blower motors. They provide a lot of pressure for relatively low power usage.
I have been told that for a moisture separator to work properly it needs to be separated from the compressor and tank by at least 20 feet of hose or piping. Also a good retractable hose real and 50 feet of hose mounted at the garage door will let you simi permanently locate the compressor at an outlet and provide the length to work on projects in or outside of your garage.
now you have the tools and the time to sandblast every single part of the firebird, down to every nut and bolt.
You picking up the comp in a firebird nice. You have a new subscriber
Great video. I love my kobalt air compressor. Makes me want a sandblaster for no reason. Lol.
I was in the same position but went with the harbor freight cabinet and a place called The Tacoma Company out of Washington, they sold tons of different parts and upgrades for cabinets.
I subscribed as soon as I saw the compressor box sticking out of the Firebird.
I have the same style air compressor as that double tank Cambell you have, though I'm not sure the brand off the top of my head. I can't plug it into my garage circuits as it trips the breaker (the bathroom and outdoor outlet share the same breaker as the garage and can't seem to handle any load at all) so I had it plugged into a surge protector that was run through a hole drilled in the wall and down to the basement. we have a stand up freezer in the garage and they were sharing the surge protector until it failed, I might have burned it up. now I just have a short extension cord running down there and I pull the freezer and plug in the compressor when I need to use it, just have to remember to plug the freezer back in. I like the compressor and it works well for my needs, which is pretty much just for topping off the air in my tires and occasional nail gun use, but my brother in law didn't take the best of care of it and the bottom tanks drain valve is kind of clogged with water and rust and will not vent anymore. I've been thinking of taking it off and trying to clean out the tank but I haven't had the motivation to do it and I'd be a little worried that something would go wrong and it wouldn't go back in right and the whole thing would become useless.
Great video! I refinish firearms and use a HARBOR FREIGHT 40lb blast cabinet and a HF 21 gallon compressor. I use 90 grit ALUMINUM OXIDE which I feel works the best for my work. However, the compressor is lack luster and needs more SCFMs. It's doable but it can become tedious as the compressor often falls behind. Anyway, loved the video n am now subscribed!
Cheaper than buying energy drinks, lol. Great new additions to the tool chest!
Great video, I have the same air compressor and want to buy a cabinet like yours.. Looks like I need to start saving
I have a new HItachi air compressor and the manual did mention to run with the drain open for 10 min. to break in the pump.
You killed me with the white wine spritzers 😂
Last summer they built a harbor fraight near me, and the first time i went there, i saw a guy trying to fit a huge toolbox inside of a third gen camaro🤣🤣 your firebird made me think of it
Loved the video. I rebuild old Delta Rockwell drill presses and other machinery. Just one thing I need to critic, I own two Dustoppers and they work great for wood working, but you’ve got yours hooked up wrong, the short hose is to connect the Dustopper to the vacuum, then the longer hose that came with the vacuum, goes from the Dustopper to the blast cabinet.
Always love your content✊keep it up
Very creative !! And I know someone with a media blaster !!
Make a bottom gravity fed media pickup out of PVC pipe👍🏻 much more efficient than the tube vacuum style
Love the video, like all your videos! Keep it up! 😁
I do love janky Frankenstein set ups with a dozen different machines from as many manufacturers and time periods. Also, does this mean we'll be getting sand blasting compilation videos in the future?
I bought the Kobalt air compressors because of this video, Lowe’s should send you a check.
i found that using a smaller nozzle helped a lot with air usage if you don't have an up to par compressor. And i don't know about your setup, but i find that there are times where the media isn't siphoned into the gun resulting in blowing air at your parts 30% of the time. Used a cheap hand held gravity fed gun, drilled out the cap to accept the media hose and now it sort of acts as a accumulator. Fills up the reservoir quick and never had feeding issues after that
When your suction system fails you should use plumbing fittings to reduce and mate the two different size pipes together.
The air compressor in the Firebird made me bust out laughing in my office - LOL - subbed
ALL ENGINE REBUILDERS. After sand blasting your block, heads and valve covers, oh yea! And transmissions. All empty. Go to the high pressure manual car wash. Blast everything with soapy hot water and then rinse. Go home and air blast all water out of the nooks n crannies. Hot Summer days help. Then I’m sure I got 99.99% of everything out. Change oil filters often. Lol
Why I haven't found this channel until now 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Hell yeah congratulations
Nice video buddy 👍🏻👌🏻
Frank Howarth is a wood worker and made a prototype in his last video of a cyclone and a motor to remove the need for a shop vac. I think the basis of his design is easily build able with a jigsaw and a drill and could help you out.
Hey, I used to have that same Sony boom box I saw behind the yellow compressor...lol
Just rewatched the blazer series when I saw new upload
For the tubing that surrounds the led light on your sand blasting cabinet, I was thinking of the mounts for a closet rod. They are designed to hold a round rod & bare the weight of hanging clothes also, I hope you use a rubber grommet where the electrical goes threw the sheet metal... By the way, I still think your pinto look Tough as Nails!!! For a Pinto, C-mon, it looks knarly!!! I AM IN LOVE WITH THE 4.125 BORE Chevrolet 400!!! Bore it .030 over, add a stroker kit, off road cam from summit, roller rockers= 700+ hp or, L.S. IT??? ALSO, ADDING A BIGGER COOLING FAN THAT YOU CAN TURN ON AT WILL! OR A BIGGER RADIATOR EITHER UNDER THE CAR, ON TOP, OR OVER THE REAR WINDOW. Wait, now I think I see that you cleaned up where the electrical wires enter the sheet metal 😀. That Pinto Bean looks SICK BRO!!!!! P.s. Do u know how many times I've had to stick that same compressor? Bye the way, I like that receiver So, a thumbs up 👍 from me!!! Oh snap, Maryland,,,, maybe I shouldn't write that considering their tyrannical, Infringing laws!!!! The screws o. The Toyota Supra's headlight bezel, you should use a whire wheel or YOUR SANDBLASTING CABINET & GET THE RUST OFF THOSE BOLT THREADS & APPLY ANTISEIZE ON THE THREADS!!!
Nice job. Thanks.
What do you get when you have a 91Fire Bird, a Homer bucket, and Duct tape.... The makings of a good YT DIY project!
IVe had a drunk friend have to get in and out of the back of a 1988 firebird, hilarious to watch, just kind of flop on the ground
I had the same problem with my kawasaki brute force 20 gallon compressor. There's too much resistance using an extension cord for the initial startup when the tank is full. It always groans and pops the internal breaker on the compressor if you run it on an extension cord
Cool video.
The longer I watched, the more I smiled.
Thanks for doing this video I have been looking into this sort of thing lately and especially a more quiet compressor. Current using a super loud harbor freight unit that lives in a shipping container and immediately causes hearing damage when it kicks on. It is a shame this one doesn't really seem to keep up, have you used any air tools with it if so how well does it work? I would really like a relatively inexpensive silent air compressor but besides the one you have I have only seen expensive ones like eastwood's scroll compressor which is like $1899 ugh.
LOVED THE VIDEO.. GIVES ME SOME IDEAS.. THANKS BUDDY.
i think you will need a screw compressor. Those bring you constant air flow that is what you need, they are a bit expensive but you will be very pleased later.
tp tools is aweosme. i have one of their larger cabinets. made in OH.
my dad acually bought a 30 kobalt oil compressor not long ago its much quieter than my grandpas old oilless craftsman
Oh, and for the mis-match of the hoses - assume you have a 3D printer? I had the same problem, and simply printed a bushing.
10:05 i did something similar the other week lol found a free 55" tv on the curb that just needed a backlight repair, and managed to get it to fit in a 2001 mustang since that's what i was driving when i found it, had to open the window but it fit, barely lmao

Great Find! Great score!
I bought the same compressor a few months ago for powder coating in an apartment one-car garage. It works really well! I'm happy with it. I haven't had any issues with using different extension cords with it, though.
My Harbor Freight (read: temporary) air compressor has the same problem of not firing up if it has pressure in it.
Have you already used all of the HF glass “bead” media? If so, did you try out a different media/supplier? Looks like it worked (eventually), but I’m interested to see the *sand* vs actual beads.
When you have time and money to upgrade you should get yourself a pedal and a BNP type gun. Also if you check into the Tocoma gravity suction metering valve instead of the pickup tube that cabine came with and you can lower your blasting pressure a little and get more blast time back as a trade off. Your blasting will take less time as well overall because you can mix a little more media. One other comment I will make is that if you do end up getting a dedicated dust collector go ahead and keep your Dustopper setup. It's easier to pop that off and dump than the dust collectors, but the dust collector I have (Skat Blast) is way quieter than my 5 HP craftsman shop vac.
I applaud your ingenuity and I enjoy your videos but I think I would have gone with the SKAT CAT 33V Top-Load Abrasive Blast Cabinet with Vacuum from TP Tools. It's currently $700.00 plus shipping and includes the vacuum system. It's quality made in the USA and comes fully assembled. I know you're on a tight budget but considering your extra expenses to rig your system up you're almost at the SKAT CAT 33V price point. Plus the set up would be a lot less cumbersome. Keep up the good video work.
Wow! Great video as always, thanks very much, I was looking for a good sand blaster as well. Did you order this through harbor freight?
I would suggest you get glass protectors for the window. It will become impossible to see out of before you know it. You can buy ones that stick on and peel off or use clear cellophane duck taped on in the spirit of this channel. Final thoughts = use Aluminium Oxide as a blast medium. Just slightly run it at a lower pressure (Help compressors keep up) and it will do a much better job then that horrible crushed glass. NOT to mention cheaper as it is much more reusable!!!
For a comparison, do you have any idea about the interior volume?
Thanks for the video from another Maryland er
From what I understand you need a ton of CFM for this kind of thing. HF used to have a 2 stage compressor with a similar size tank for ~$350....no more though. Bummer.

@@ChrisG0 I really don't know why FDP is so frugal with some of the things he does, but I do enjoy watching him do things his own way even though they sometimes don't make sense to me. I mean... the biggest shopvac at the hardware store is like $140. That seems like a no-brainer for most of us or at least it was for me when I bought mine.

Dry ice blasting, soda blasting, confused about using playground sand, but usually it'll be a silica type or aluminum oxide type media you would use in a blast cabinet or glass bead media even steel shot, there's many ways just depends on what your working on and what you want out of it

Vapor blasting is another interesting method. Same as sandblasting but also with water. These blasters can be converted to a vapor blaster. Nicer finish and no dust.
how many psi are you running through it ? if you get a chance have a look at my cabinet i made from a old freezer and home made dust extractor
Great video, what part of md are you in? I'm in Frederick.
