Setting Floor Trusses and Decking - Couple Builds Dream House

In this episode of our Couple Builds Dream House series we are setting the floor trusses and decking. This is the floor for our apartment above the garage. We used floor trusses because the span is 26 feet and they are cheaper than i-Joists. We also wanted the garage to be an open span without posts in the middle.

Marty you just need to replace the brushes on your skill saw and it will work like new. They where out over time. Their not that expensive. At least if you do that you will have a spare. I did that to the old dewalt sheet rock gun drill that a friend of mine gave me. New they were around $150.00 The battery was around $125.00. I got a smart charger that was on clearance one of the last ones they had for $25.00 new they went for around $115.00 or so. I use it for everything I need it for still works like new. When my brushes went it smoked really bad like your saw. Their very easy to replace.

I'm a framer by trade. Close to 30 yrs experience. You guys done a very nice, professional job. Great job! The only thing I could add is seeing you guys moving those trusses standing on top of the ladder made me cringe a little. 2x6 is very easy to walk and it's much safer and easier than using a ladder. You can slide the trusses and use them for balance. And if you cut a 8' 2x4, lay it tight against the groove and use a sledgehammer, you can knock that T&G in nice and tight. Your boy helping is awesome!

I was about to comment that you should be using a construction adhesive for the sub-flooring and on queue you showed it being put down. Great decision to paint the sub-floor immediately. Hopefully you can get the second floor walls, roof trusses and sheathing on before any significant rain or worse yet snow.... looking good guys and even better teamwork 👍👍👍

The "rocking" as you call it, is a term we call racking in construction. A diagonal brace in the walls will solve this problem. A 2x6 Placed on a 45 degree in each corner will stop racking. Great video.

I believe the joist across the floor trusses is called a ribband. The wobble is called bounce in the floor because of the large span. The best way I found to beat the tongue into the groove of the prior sheathing is to use a 3x4 stud with a sledge hammer. So you would beat on the 3x4 up against the sheathing until it is snug in place. The boss used to tell us to quit using up his 3x4's. Now I was an Apprentice at the time following along with the Journeyman, but by golly, his way really worked!

@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving Oh, I see. Yes, the sheathing would take care of that. Looks great! As a traditionalist, I still prefer breaking up the floor span into two 13-ft sections, but many people prefer using floor trusses. Both ways work. If you look at a really old shack type of place that is still standing in good shape, it's because they used beams. But if you are not planning on being around in 150 years, it doesn't matter much. I tend to take a conservative approach. But on my next home design, I might as well give floor trusses a try. They are a fire hazard for the upstairs. You won't have much time to flee from the second story in an emergency, because it takes much more time for the fire to burn through regular floor joists. Floor trusses light up like matchboxes - something to keep in mind if an emergency ever happens. There are pros and cons to both methods...very impressed with the build.

Nice work but, as a farm-boy, I have a lot of uncles who died in tractor related incidents. If you're gonna lift subfloor sheets, strap them securely to the bucket (there's nothing to stop them from sliding down the arms, over the engine cowling and right up against your guts. Tractors are pretty much homicidal. If you let your guard down for an instant, they'll end you. They show how they use straps later in the video.

You guys are getting so many comments about safety. This is serious stuff that you should really address. Love your videos and construction build and it looks really nice. Almost looking like pro's for sure. All it takes is one simple slip or misstep and everything comes to a grinding halt. Sure wish you guys would abide from just a few changes to safety protocol. Especially now that you are on the second story. It gets real once up at that height. Look forward to next video with a new taller A-Frame ladder and some hard hats, safety goggles.

Check out the Bostitch Litium Ion cordless framing nailer. Best $400 I ever spent. It'll drive 3 1/2" nails all day on a charge. No compressor and no hose in the way. My favorite tool.

Great job 👏. Gluing and screwing is the way to go! The stone mix you used will pack hard and be serviceable. Clean stone would have been a problem. Try and see if you can channel the sides to redirect water in rainy periods. Its hard to make a recommendation on vids, but you can figure it for sure. 👍

I was looking at the side walls. I think you need to double some of those 2x6 to help support the second floor. That might stop the shake. There is alot of weight there. I would Beef it up.

You scared me on how you were standing on those ladders and when you were moving those truss. All I could see is that first one tilting over, was so glad when it was tied into the frame. Safety Sally had her hand on the cell phone. Please be careful and safe.

You will have to install center tubular posts two to support the center of the floor. If you dont the floor will sag causing severe deformities in the floor and walls

Of course, Mr. Martin, it's wobbly, as you're building a structure which needs to be complete as different pieces do tie others together giving them stability. As you build the wall frame, it's like noodles, it bends, twists and flaps in the wind... With sheathing you give it stability in one direction, with trusses and upper floor it becomes a compact structure. Anyway, you got a pretty long span in between walls, so I'm positive it will be wobbly a little even sheathed.. =) It's a wooden house, wood has a high elasticity coefficient, also steel has a nice elastiicty, concrete is very not elastic.. Cheers and keep up the good work..
