Setting and Controlling Audio Levels - EOS R5C Tip 15

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Continuing the discussion on audio settings on the EOS R5C, this time we're looking at the settings and menus that you need to know to be able to control your recording levels.
In this video I'll cover how to:
◆ Link and separate audio inputs.
◆ Choose between auto and manual level control
◆ Adjust the recording levels
◆ Activate the built in level attenuators
◆ Disable the built in microphone

I would recommend folks to make a simplified 'user menu' for the CH1 and CH2 inputs. You can add just the linked/separated state, level settings for each channel, headphone monitoring channels, headphone volume and the mic att setting. That will cover you for almost all scenarios without having to navigate three separate pages in the original menus.

Yea, I have to agree. That's actually a really good tip thanks for sharing.

Better intros/openings are something I've wanted to improve for a long time. The only problem is that the stuff I cover typically doesn't lend itself to that kind of thing, and I also usually forget to excerpt an interesting clip from somewhere in the video too.

The really cool thing is after I purchased the Ninja V plus I watcheda video where someone compared the audio. It seems the preamps in the Ninja really crush cannons internal preamps. I'm pretty excited to test it out as I wasn't happy with the audio quality from the mic using the auxiliary.

I'm not surprised. I mean it's not like it's really that hard to build a good quality audio amp and ADC system. It just doesn't seem like that's been a priority for Canon in, at least their consumer level cameras. And seriously, they just need to do it once, and they can reuse the design from camera to camera so it's not like it's not something where the engineering costs are limited to a niche area. And while the R5C is a cinema camera, it's hardware is almost all identical to the R5. From what I've seen the C70 and up actually do a much better job, and support balanced XLR inputs (along with phantom power for them). Which raises an interesting question and something I'd love to test one of these days, which is how does the R3 compare given that it's suppose to be a more "pro" product than the R5.

@@PointsInFocus I would love to see those results and watch that video! Yeah that's what held me back from moving to Canon for so many years. It was always missing a few things. No manufacturer is perfect. I really like what Panasonic is doing. The s52 was an easy second choice for me. I do love the Canon R5C And I will be shooting my first event with it on Saturday. Really excited

I plugged a shotgun mic onto the 3.5 mm jack and all the audio settings are still greyed out? do you have any workaround for this?

  • @PointsInFocus

If the camera isn't making the settings available, then it's not detecting that the mic has actually been plugged in. The camera detects the presence of a mic mechanically through the jack, not from the electrical properties of the mic. You can plug any 3.5mm patch cable into the jack and it should be detected and enable the settings. Other than making sure that the mic's plug is fully seated in the camera, there's not a whole lot else I can think of to try. That said, just on the off chance that the mic's plug is somehow not quite to spec, you could try plugging in any 3.5mm patch cable to see if the camera detects that. If that doesn't work, you're probably going to have to get the camera serviced.

@@PointsInFocus Thanks for a quick response, it turns out mic started showing up in Normal recording mode , i was in S&F mode before

That would also do it, the normal S&F mode doesn't support recording sound. There is a sepcial S&F w/ Audio mode if you need sound and S&F motion video.

Hello, got a sub from me. Very informative video but it would have been really useful if you gave your opinion on which settings to choose instead of just explaining "what" they are. Do you use separated or linked? Automatic or manual? If manual which level do you recommend for CH1 and CH2? All the menu 3 items on or off? Would love to know your thoughts as you are clearly very knowledgeable on the details and I have no idea at the moment! 😢 Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hi, you're right, I didn't include recommendations in this one because of the nature of recording audio and the fact that any settings would be very situational. So for example, if you use manual levels, then the level you set for the various channels is whatever level gets the average level in the meter to between -18 and -12 dB in the situation you're working in (e.g. if you're shooting an interview, then with the person talking at a normal volume). The exact level you need is going to depend on the distance you are from the subject, whether you're using an external mic, and which mic you're using. So it's not like I can just say use 25 or 48, because that's not going to be the right setting for any situation other than the one I set it in. The same can be said for auto versus manual levels. The "standard" answer is that you should always use manual levels, and set the levels like I just described. This works, and is arguably the right way to do things especially if you're just running the audio recorder, but it also makes a lot of assumptions about what you need and what exactly you're doing. For example, I shoot with 2 system audio, this means that I record the audio you hear in the video on a completely separate audio recorder and mic, that I sync to the video in post. This is a standard way higher end productions work, but at the same time, it's not necessarily the right way for every KZreadr. However, because I work that way, I don't care if the camera's audio is setup "right" or "optimally" in a traditional sense, I care that 1) it produces a usable waveform for syncing and 2) that I don't have to spent any mental bandwidth worrying about it at all on it after I hit record. So I have my camera setup to record in auto, and I do all the "proper" level setting on a separate recorder. When it comes to audio, this is one of those places where you have to put in some time experimenting to find what sounds good and works for you. I personally found it very difficult to reconcile the "absolutes" that so many tutorials and videos on the topic would present with the reality that my recordings just didn't sound good doing what they said to do. While I wouldn't say don't watch or read everything you can on the topic, I found you absolutely have to test things and see what sounds best to you. Hope that helps a little.

Hey buddy, just a quick tip….I normally do linked when I have control in the environment eg interview but when shooting weddings /concerts 99% of the time I do separate just to have a audio backup….please never shoot automatic unless u syncing it with a good recorded audio in posts production…please shoot manual to control the volume of your audio….Also make sure u turn the Monaural mic off when shooting manual and turn the Mic low cut LC1 to eliminate any unwanted noise ed…AC,breath and humps.I hope this will help..
