This is the best edge finder video I have found. I watched several and yours is the most clear and makes the most sense while not taking forever to get to the point.

I try to get into the habit of setting speed before loading edge finder, too fast & the spring stretches & the end flies off. I sometimes still forget though! I run mine at 550 rpm, any higher can cause the edge finder to bounce & give unreliable results. My tip is to always set the end stop close to the centre of the y axis. Or if not using an end stop find the x axis datum near the centre of the part width. If the end is slightly out of square you half any error, also it helps repeatability if the part is reloaded another time.

When the tip offsets, why not just set the dial to 0.100 directly, instead of setting it twice (first to zero, then again to zero after moving the table 0.100)?

Joseph Lippencott there’s nothing wrong with that at all. I have instructed thousands of people in using the edge finder. I have found that many people need to set zero and then visually see the offset direction so that no mistakes are made. I appreciate your comment!

So once I move .100 on either x or y I must touch the other end of the part and what ever I got after setting my zero I have to divide that by 2 correct?

Thats if your work center is zero

Wouldn't the split indicate that you have actually just gone past the perfect centration of the rotating tool?

Okay, I'm a few years late to the party, but I just watched this excellent video, and here's an answer: If you watch closely you'll see that the edge finder doesn't kick out away from the face of the work, but rather it kicks out parallel to the surface, as if it's trying to slide along the work piece surface. In the video, the edge finder kicks out to the left; if the rotation of the spindle was reversed, it would kick out to the right. It's the slight drag of the spinning edge finder against the work that causes this, not the work piece pushing it beyond its center.
