Incredible family. Senor Bulto was the grandest person I ever met. I was the team manager for Team Roberts Spain when we signed Sete up to partner Kenny Jnr in the 1993 Open Ducados Series. Sete got on the podium in the first event of the season at Albacete. The prize money was paid to the team, who then distributed it as they wanted. Sete asked me to write two cheques for his winnings - half to him and the other half to his brother Borja. Says everything about him and the family.

Sete absolutely got ripped off by Dorna and Moto GP for letting Rossi’s off the hook. They were too gutless to stand up to Rossi, that was unforgivable.

It was just racing. It wasn't a dangerous move, it was just a move that resulted in contact. If you watch the others there, like Marquez on Lorenzo, its totally worse, the contact is not 50/50 at the apex but 30/70 before it. I get that he felt and still feels that Rossi should have been penalized but he made the apex and the contact was right there, at the apex. With Rossi as far left as possible. It wasn't even a block pass, Sete just had a slightly wide line and obviously didn't expect Rossi to send it otherwise he would have made a defensive line. That's why he didn't get a penalty because no penalty would fit the crime since Rossi hadn't committed any foul. Alot like football where someone makes a slide tackle and so happens to trip the other guy at the same time. If the ball is fully in control of that player making the tackle, you cannot call it a foul by the laws of the rules. And you can't just penalize people because young people coming through might copy it and take it too far. The way around it is not through regulations but through societal treatment. Competitors like Schumacher, Verstappen and Marquez should be ostracized for their actions, instead they are lauded and celebrated despite being prepared to put people into walls when the chips are down.... The FANS are to blame for this, nobody else. If Sete really thinks you can just make rules that forbid contact with another rider during an overtake will fix the problem it wont, it will just be in reverse and you will have those defending their position turning into the guy overtaking on purpose just to go down and get the guy a big penalty.

Sete is deep .

I’ll never forget the 2003 season when we lost Daijiro Kato who was and will always be my favorite rider of all time. I was devastated, I still think about Kato all the time. After we lost him I rooted for Sete and it felt like he was riding for Kato and he did amazing, gave Rossi a great fight. One of my guitars has a 74 sticker that a friend got for me from Kato’s and Sete’s Gresini team when he had a chance to meet the team. I can never sell that guitar for that reason ❤️. Such and an amazing podcast episode! Thank you for this 🙏 glad to see Sete doing so well.

Saw sete ride in 99 at Donington, he highsided in morning warm-up, that day i got to see the risks these guys put themselves through Always one of my favourite riders ,and to hear him talk for a few hours was great ,what a great guy 🤘🏼

I love this channel and these long conversations, especially with the MotoGP guys, and even more so for the 'Zen and the Art...' reference, my favourite book too. But at times this one felt like a 3am chat between the last two guys at the bonfire when one is drunk and making no sense and the other is sober and only staying because he thinks the drunk one might fall in the fire if he leaves.

I knew who Sete was but i didn't know anything about him outdside of MotoGP......... dude what a fascinating guy!! He is so self aware, introspective and humble, but he gives off a quiet confidence vibe. This was almost like a therapy session for me lol, and a phenomenal episode as usual!! Much appreciated sir 😁✌️

Always been a fan of Sete. When he finished that race after the 2001 World Trade Center attack, he grabbed an American flag, walked out into the gravel and planted that flag as a sign of respect for those in mourning....that really was a class act and a moment I will always remember. I built an R1 trackbike and did a replica of the Telefonica Movistar bike he was riding at the time.

Glad he brought up the 2005 Jerez incident, Floggi showed his true colours that race and anyone that follows racing could see it way back in 1997. He was always a desperate and dirty racer but his ability to sway the yellow army and media to his side kept him squeeky clean.

Brother, you are killing it! I watch and enjoy your Moto racers but thank you for these road racers. They have great stories to tell. Just as an old guy I learn more about today’s riders from your interviews, the younger fans of our sport get to learn about the racers that came before them. We follow a wonderful sport with an amazingly reach heritage. Thank you for recording it for future generations. God bless!

Enjoyed this interview. Sete was able to convey so much of his experiences into blessings that have filled his cup to overflowing. We should all be so lucky to garner that wisdom.

Amazing Podcast!! Keep'em coming!! Sete seems to have a great personality and philosophy. Agree with him that you can feel the spirit of a person. Funny story, I was around 10 when he was battling Valentino and after watching the races used to grab my bike and pretend I was him riding through the garage. Didn't knew much about him back them but I really liked him. As he said, funny how we behave as kids!

Think the word he is searching for is "enthusiasm" or how his daughter is so enthusiastic about doing things. Great interview...Sete is a very interesting and genuine character.

When Sete's ambulance was involved in the accident that threw him to the floor,did anybody else think The Simpsons? When Homer tried to jump a canyon on Bart's skateboard,but got fuctup,and his ambulance bapped?

Sete seems like such a nice a genuine guy. Brilliant rider and doesn't get the credit for really pushing Vale the furthest when Vale was at the peak of his powers. Even Biaggi couldn't push Rossi like Sete did. Unfortunately I think Rossi broke Sete mentally in 2004. After Qatar when Sete won, he went to Malaysia and somehow was defending himself after the whole grid cleaning scandal. It was like a media assassination and even though Sete did have some brilliant rides and pushed Vale the following season, he just wasn't the same after that.

As much of a fan of Valentino Iam, have to admit Sete is right about Jerez in 2005…

As much as I admire Valley, he was clearly a favourite of DORNA, they were working very hard to make Moto GP a global brand. Understandable and sad at the same time.

Sidebar to an amazing podcast but I think the best English word for his Spanish ‘illusion’ at the beginning would be ‘illuminating’. In English there isn’t really a noun for an illumination but seeing a bird fly for the first time would definitely be an illuminating experience for a small child. ‘She found it illuminating’ as opposed to ‘it was an illumination for her’ like the Spanish grammar for the word works.

Every successive 'winner' uses a level of perceived aggression more 'inordinate' than the last. Marquez was much worse than Valle and still gets away with it. Sete was not cheated - he just did not have the ability to out-think, out-phsyco Rossi. Verstappen did the same to Hamilton - and eventually - to save their own body and soul - they back off. Sete is philosophical - it's obvious and his references to 'ilusión' - is indicative of this - he is spiritual - his veneration of Daijiro Kato at races and podiums, demonstrates a character that many 'winners' just don't have time for. Great rider - flawless style - fast, but just too much humanity.

Ilusion to me feels almost like "child delusion". Maan watching him talking thous histories the way he is saying them, it feels to me as if all this 2004/5 is still deep inside his soul that he can't forget and accept the cruelty of life. Which is sad. I was die hard fan of Rossi back then and Sete was considered an evil opponent (just like Casey, Jorge and Marc) xd (now I am laughing at this and my naivity xd). Now as I got older I totally understand Sete's perspective which for me is even touching in a way. And I also see today that Rossi was no choir boy either back then. Today I totally understand that both Vale, Sete, Casey, Jorge, Marc were and are simply fighting for their respective lifes and opportunities and it is done at the expence of others fighting for the same goal and that the world we live in is simply cruel by definition and we have to deal with it somehow. But it is continuously impresive to have an opportunity to know a perspective of this gladiators because I have more and more appreciation for thouse indyviduals. Great tale Gipsy! Sete should actually be extremely thankful for his career · Went from Modenas/Proton/Roberts to HRC BECAUSE Takuma Aoki got paralyzed on a road traffic accident · Jumped from the NSR500V to a real NSR500 BECAUSE Mick Doohan destroyed his right leg for a 2nd time · Jumped from a shitty RC211V to a factory-spec one BECAUSE Daijiro Kato died in Suzuka (and Kiyonari was shit in testing) While he's rather good, he has to be the luckiest MFer in MotoGp history. 3 horrific accidents built him up to battling for the MotoGp title for 3 seasons straight.

I do not perceive any lack of gratitude in him for what life has brought to him. In fact, quite the opposite. And let me emphasize one thing: what you are talking about is simply life itself. If Valentino Rossi had never crossed paths with a motorbike, he might never have become the Rossi we know today. If FC Barcelona hadn't signed a young child named Leo Messi and supported him with his medical treatment, we might have missed the opportunity to witness one of the greatest players to ever grace the field. That's life, my friend. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose

Sure that was "lucky" but those incidents had nothing to do with him and he still built a championship fighting career out of it so it was well deserved.

Exactly. Respect for Sete but if you followed his career you should know he was always mediocre and given opportunity after opportunity, until he finally made it work on Kato's bike and Honda's full support. Thanks to a very low level in those years, and with a better bike he was somewhat able to be one of Rossi's rival, even if he was nowhere near Valentino's or Biaggi's level of ability and talent.

Well that doesn't mean much actually: Rossi's last win was in 2017, he retired in 2021. That's a longer drought than Sete's who retired in 2006 and won his last race in 2004. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if we find out one day that a pissed off Marquez told his crew that Valentino would never win another race...

There's plenty of meanings for the word "ilusión" in Spanish, but the meaning Sete refers to is quite difficult to explain in english. I'd say it is similar to "looking forward to" but x100.
