    This exactly answered my question about how to use the NAS VPN client to route my Mac's traffic over a VPN! Now is it possible in the MacOS Network Preferences to set up certain specific routes (IP destinations) that will use the NAS VPN client as their router while letting other traffic use the default (non-VPN) router on my LAN?

    First of all I want to thank you as I have learned a lot from your tutorials. I have a problem. I followed all the steps carefully and both from the NAS and from the PC then configured, all traffic is on the VPN (I use NordVPN). However, as soon as I start the VPN connection, the port forwarding rules are disabled and consequently the NAS (with all the Photos services etc ...), is no longer reachable from the internet. I have enabled the item enable multiple gateways, to no avail. Is there perhaps a solution? Thanks in advance.

    I see that PIA allows the purchase of a dedicated IP address. It would be great to see a video how to use that rather than using ddns and google domains or other ddns provider to point to this address. What do you think?

  • @digital_aloha

    @digital_aloha

    Hi Greg, I've read up a little bit on the dedicated IP address option offered by PIA and from what I can tell this is only available for use with their PIA desktop or mobile app (I think). It requires using a token that activates the dedicated IP and I don't think it is an option for Synology NAS connectivity. Let me know if you know otherwise and/or if I misinterpreted what you were looking to do please let me know.

    @@digital_aloha thank you for your answer. Yes more or less we are speaking of the same argument, but from different point of view. My goal is to access NAS files also when out of my private network. The only way to do this is use VPN. I've already tried the VPN Server road, but I have also to open the ports on Router and my customer had recently a Randomsware attack and so he doesn't want open anything anymore. So my idea is this one: If I have an external VPN Server (Open VPN i.e.), I can connect to that Virtual Private Network from the NAS (as a client) and connect to the same network with a client (from a different location). If VPN is configured correctly, this trick should work. What do you think? Anyway, if I can't succeed in this way, I will follow your link, that is the right link for what I need. Thank you.

    @@elioscorner Ahh, I understand your setup better now!! I'm no networking expert, but the scenario you described should work if the clients are allowed access to other clients and I'm not sure if Private Internet Access allows that. If you do use a OpenVPN server that you spin up on a cloud provider, like Linode or Digital Ocean, you may have a bit more control on enabling this feature. Hopefully you do find a solution that works for you and please share your setup if you do. Good luck!!

    Hi Carlos, You can connect to your Synology NAS remotely even if you are connected as a VPN client, but not on the same VPN protocol. In this video, for example, you'll be connecting to PIA as an OpenVPN client so you won't be able to connect to an OpenVPN server running on your Synology NAS (actually the NAS will complain letting you know this isn't possible). You should be able to connect to the Synology NAS through other services like L2TP/IPSec or Tailscale. Hope this answers your question and good luck in your setup!!

My hunch is that this option overrides any entry in the ovpn configuration file that is used that may not route all traffic through the default gateway on the remote network. @@AIM54P I did some testing and can confirm that the use default gateway on remote network box does change the behavior when setting up a Synology NAS as an OpenVPN client to another Synology NAS that is an OpenVPN server. If toggled on everything goes through the remote network, but if toggled off I was able to access the devices on the remote network, but all other traffic would go through the local default gateway.
