Thank you for this video. Just created a 2nd customized button to incorporate your settings and triple BBF. Exactly what I've been looking for compared to other double or triple BBF videos I've seen. You have a great teaching style.

I am so happy I found your channel. I am slowly figuring out all the settings on my canon r5 but it takes time and patience. with your experience and explanation I feel like I am finally understanding the different focus points options. I wanted to ask you a question about taking a picture of two birds feeding each other. which focus points would you choose for this scenario? the box one? I took a picture but it was all blurry. thank you for your help.

I'm glad you found my video helpful! I'm actually working on an updated R5 setup guide--I've changed a few things in my setup as of late that I need to pass on. I would use the smallest AF box (spot autofocus) and place it on one of the birds. Make sure your depth of field is not too shallow (try F8 or so, not F4 or wider), so both birds are in focus. Also make sure you are taking a lot of shots-I always shoot in high speed continuous plus (14 frames / second). Then find the sharp ones and throw out the soft ones.

Sir, i saw a video claiming it is possible to have your release button set for AF and metering; and also use backbutton focus, essentially provinding an extra option. If in this setup you use backbutton AF it overrules the release button. Is this true? Thank you for your excellent video's!!!

Yes, that certainly works because the back button will override (when pressed and held) the shutter button with regard to metering and autofocus.

Does the "subject to detect" option set to animals only apply when eye detection is used? I'm setting up BBF specifically AF-ON button for normal focusing without eye detection, but set to1 Point AF. Will "subject to detect" animals be ignored and use "none"? I set up the * button with eye detection. I'm a bird photographer and want to be able to prefocus on perches and nests without the R5 AF searching for an animal.

Hello! Sorry for the delay. Here's the answers to your questions: #1) "does the subject to detect option set to animals only apply when eye detection is used?" When "subject to detect" is set to animals, only then do you have the option of turning on or off eye detection. In other words, Eye detection only functions with the autofocus method called face symbol + tracking (aka, subject + tracking). In any other autofocus method, the eye detection choice will be grayed out. # 2) if your shooting birds, then you should always have "subject to detect" on animals (Canon engineers have designed the autofocus system to look for birds, cats, and dogs in this mode). If you choose the spot autofocus autofocus method (a.k.a., autofocus box, autofocus area, autofocus point), then it will still look for animals but you cannot have eye detection engaged. With the spot autofocus method used, even though you will be looking for birds inside that tiny little box, it's not going to make much difference it will probably default to looking for contrast and detail. However, if you go to one of the autofocus zones, then there is a noticeable difference - it will definitely find birds within the autofocus zone box. So, (and I use this all the time) to pre-focus on a branch (where you think the bird is going to gland) just use one of the smaller autofocus methods (i.e., spot autofocus, or one-point autofocus are the best), engage whatever button you have autofocus start set up on (probably one of the back buttons if you're using back button autofocus, main shutter button if you're not), and wait for the bird to fly in. Then just press the shutter button and hold the autofocus box on the branch and you will capture the bird coming in. Note: make sure your depth of Field is not too narrow,, or you may miss the bird flying in at an unexpected angle. (I usually set mine to f/8.) Good luck and happy birding!

I found your 3 back button video first and did the set up. Will this video still apply? I don't want to do changes and then mess up the back button video settings? Than you in advance Phyllis

Hello Phyllis, I would watch the video I just published (2024) rather than this older one. Its more in depth and it will show you how to set up triple back button autofocus, triple front button autofocus and show you the way that i like to shoot these days :-) here's the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dn-rl6NylqiYfZs.html
