💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This lesson is part two in my series on jazz guitar scales.
In this video, we go deep on improvising melodies over chord progressions that change keys.
This is a critical skill for playing jazz.
I use the tune "Solar" by Miles Davis as an example, and you can do the same process over any tune or chord progression.
The goal of this lesson is to connect the scales for multiple keys anywhere on the fretboard.
In the video, we go through exercises designed to help you do exactly that.
I hope you enjoy this lesson about jazz guitar scales and find it beneficial.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
Thanks! :)

Hey Jared! I’ve been playing ukelele for 3 years now. Recently, I picked up the guitar and your videos have been a huge inspiration for me in transitioning from 4strings to 6 lol - your energy and teaching style make learning enjoyable and easy to follow. But I didn’t just reach out to say how awesome you are lol. I noticed that your videos are primarily in English and I think it would be awesome to help you reach an even wider audience by translating them into Spanish. I can translate by dubbing what you say while keeping the sound of the guitar and music the same. Let me know if you’re interested. Looking forward to working with you!

This is a brilliant and fundamental exercise for jazz guitar, or improvising in any style with a shifting tonality. I've been doing this for over 40 years.

This lesson really "chunks" the process of improvising over key changes. I am anxious to apply that process to a song/genre that I am more familiar with. Thanks for laying this out so concisely Jared!

This is so good and important. In making up my daily study/practice… I can allocate a segment to work on this series. There are many other things I need. You have a song pack (I need to learn how to learn and memorize song … so I can play for others…. My major weakness. Thank you.

Great!! Would love to see more Jazz content! I'm currently working on soloing over Autumn Leaves but really struggling. Could you maybe do a lessons where you offer suggestions on what to play over the most common Jazz Progressions? (ii-V-I Major; ii-V-I minor; IV chord; I-VI;ii-V etc.)? Or maybe just more videos on Jazz Soloing Strategies?

You're in luck! Lots more jazz content on the way. My next few videos are going to be helpful for giving you some tools to improvise over common jazz progressions. Thanks for your support 🙏

To identify the next note at the moment the key changes -- is the idea that the entire new scale shape should snap into view? Is this done via the first exercises of drilling the scales? Would it be counterproductive to keep the printed scale shapes for each key center nearby to assist in visualization?

  • @soundguitar

Great questions! Yes, the idea is that the entire new shape (and chord tones if this same things is done with chord tones - videos on that coming soon) snaps into view. And you're exactly right, this skill is solidified by doing the exercise where we play out of time 8th notes and pause to find the closest note when the chords change - and doing that a ton. I'm glad you asked about using the diagrams - yes, at that stage of practice it is definitely counterproductive to let yourself look at the diagrams. Look at the diagrams all you want while memorizing the scales initially in the exercises from part 1 in this series (link in the description), but once you can play them up and down without looking in order through the tune, and once you move on to these exercises in this video, definitely don't look at the diagrams. I hope that helps! Thanks for asking. ** Jared

Another great lesson, I have a lot to learn. Another question. Since there are 5 different scales, would you consider doing the entire scale for the whole fret board, or just these sections?

  • @soundguitar

    @soundguitar

These exercises are designed to be done in one position at a time. If you repeat the exercise series in different fretboard positions, you can eventually cover every scale across the whole fretboard.
