If your given all the terms on the right hand side of the equation then count the total number of them, in the 3 3 3 3 3 example in the video n= 5

Use S=a(1-r^n)/(1-r) where S is the sum of the first n terms, a, the first term and r the common ratio. Best to go on my website rather than KZread and look in the index for the sum of a GP.

One question, I know that for geometric series there is a formula for a large sum, just as there is one for arithmetic series. So, is there one for this type of problems? I have to solve one exercise which has a sum up to 20 and I doubt that I have to do each one manually...

    Hey, great video however I was wondering what if r is not equal to 1? n Sigma r=12 af(r) for example i.e. Would: n = 20, r = 12 20 Sigma r = 12 (3r) be equal to 3 20 Sigma r = 12 (r)

    At 9:35, wouldn't it be S = n-b(a) - 'b' being the original r value? As a general rule, it'd only work for examples where r=1?

Marissa Hosein You might not need it anymore since you wrote your comment two years ago, but it might help someone else. The nth term of a geometric series ar^n-1, where; a=the first number of the sequence r= the common ratio (to find that, divide the second number by the first (in your example, you would divide -4 by 2, which is -2)) So, if I am correct, the nth term is 2(-2)^n-1.
